When Claudio’s pious sister Isabella appeals to Angelo, she is offered the difficult choice to betray her honour and her vow of chastity in exchange for her brother’s life. Neutral Mask Workshop Level II with Writer-in-Residence Sara Tilley (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 15, 2014 - February 15, 2014

No previous mask or performance experience is necessary. Limited space available. You must pre-register by emailing stilley@ucalgary.ca. You must take LEVEL I first to attend this session. For information on the LEVEL I workshop on Saturday, February 8, 2014, visit http://calgarywritersprogram.com/events/neutral-mask-workshop-I. Dress in comfortable clothing suitable for movement and bring either a yoga mat or thick blanket. NEUTRAL MASK is a powerful tool for any creative person—it allows you to simplify, to reconnect to the physical body, and to live in the present moment. The neutral mask pares us down to the essential. It is a beginning place from which to approach any new character or project, a form of moving meditation. It encourages us to take the risk of paying full attention to the present moment. This work is beneficial to all artists—actors, writers, musicians, dancers, visual artists - as well as to anyone who is curious about mask. “Neutral mask allows those who wear it to get in touch with their core being, their most authentic, intuitive self. The mask encourages a sense of wholeness, of physical, emotional, and intellectual centeredness. In the mask one lives in the moment, questioning nothing, yet empowered to make changes as needed. It integrates mind and body, clarifies impulse and allows the wearer to experience the power and increased presence that come from absolute self-acceptance. Energy that formerly would be wasted on self-doubt and critical comments about a given situation is now used on problem solving. Neutral mask allows you to take off all the other masks.” - Jan Henderson LEVEL II will take the neutral mask experience further into its application as a sponge for energy and experience. Using the mask to channel different natural energies and to create the foundations for character, this session will build on the work done in Level I (you must take Level I first to attend this session). Sara Tilley has studied neutral mask with Ian Wallace, Dean Gilmour and Jill Courtney. She is a writer, actor, clown and physical theatre teacher who works with artists and non-artists in Neutral Mask and Pochinko Clown Through Mask. This workshop is offered free of charge to participants thanks to the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program, where Sara is currently Writer-in-Residence, with partnership from the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary. "Because You Matter" Initiative Kick-Off Walk Wrap-Up (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 14, 2014 - February 14, 2014

The "Because You Matter" initiative is designed to encourage a greater sense of support and increase the likelihood of improved mental health on the University of Calgary campus by reminding all members of our community (students, faculty, staff, alumni) that they matter to others enough to ask for support if they need it, but they also can be the person to matter to someone else by reaching out and offering their support. A 24 hour kick-off walk (0.5km, drop-in basis starting in the South Courtyard of MacEwan Student Centre) has been happening since February 13th at 1pm and will end at 1pm on February 14th. At this time there will be a wrap-up event with Dr. Elizabeth Cannon and Adriana Tulissi from the SU Wellness Centre speaking briefly. All are invited and encouraged to attend the wrap up, but also to complete the walk prior to 1pm.

Language Put to Work: Labour and Collective Organization in the Media and Communication Industries (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 14, 2014 - February 14, 2014

ABOUT TRIPLE C - The Triple C Speakers Series is a monthly colloquium hosted by the Department of Communication and Culture presenting new research and special interest topics in the Social Sciences and Humanities to the University of Calgary community. The events are free and followed by a reception. Language Put to Work: Labour and Collective Organization in the Media and Communication Industries. Dr. Enda Brophy will engage with labour conditions, worker resistance and collective organization in the media and communication industries. Working in these sectors and joining the “creative class,” runs a dominant narrative, offers a possibility of passionate work, autonomy, and workplaces with minimal hierarchy. Yet, the reality of labour in the contemporary creative industries is often markedly different, characterized by increasing competitiveness, chronic overwork, endemic unpaid labour, and rampant unstable employment. The presentation will start with a discussion of the emergent collective responses to labour precarity by contract workers, interns, and other flexworkers. It will then move on to an overview of the remarkable rise of the transnational workforce toiling in call centres—one of the fastest growing and paradigmatic workspaces of our time. As a result of their steady meshing into the circuits of the global economy, the growth of call centres over the last quarter century has produced notable shifts in the composition of labour forces across many regions:Language Put to Work investigates emergent forms of labour resistance, conflict and collective organization along the digital assembly lines on three continents.

Location:

Social Sciences Building Room 202

Speaker:

Dr. Enda Brophy is Assistant Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. He is currently completing a manuscript on labour resistance in global call centres (Language Put to Work: Labour and Communicative Capitalism) and collaborating on a SSHRC-supported research project, Cultural Workers Organize (2011-2014). His translation of Gigi Roggero’s The Production of Living Knowledge: Crisis of the University and Transformation of Labor in Europe and North America was published by Temple University Press.

Department of Economics Seminar Series - David Johnson (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 14, 2014 - February 14, 2014

"Can't Tough This! Willingness to Keep "Dirty Money" Abstract: Traditionally, larger than equilibrium allocations by proposers in Dictator Games (gifts) have been explained by aspects of altruism, reciprocity, and fairness. However, this assumes the gift to be mutually desirable to the proposer and responder. Giving may also be driven by a desire of the proposer to rid herself of the gift or to generate obligation on the part of the responder. We examine this by using three sources to generate the endowment in a Dictator Game: (1) undergraduate students, (2) Amazon Mechanical Turk workers, and (3) users of a racially/ethnically charged web forum. This endowment is provided to subjects in a traditional laboratory experiment. We find no significant differences in the proposer allocation decisions across the three sources. Rather we find that proposer affect toward the source of the endowment affects the allocation decision. Our results suggest that decision making can be strongly influenced by the provider of income shocks. February 14, 2014 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. SS 423

Models of Protein-coding Gene Evolution (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 14, 2014 - February 14, 2014

Abstract: Codon substitution models have traditionally been used to measure selective pressures in protein-coding genes by evaluating the ratio of rates of nonsynonymous (amino acid replacing) to synonymous (silent) substitutions. More recent approaches have explored the idea of explicitly modeling site-specific purifying selection at the amino acid level. Loosely speaking, with such models, substitutions at a given position occur at the neutral or near-neutral rate when they do not alter the amino acid encoded, or when they correspond to replacements within a sub-set of suitable amino acids---substitutions to ill-suited amino acids have much lower rates. Two perspectives have been taken with regards to the amino acid variables in such models: in the first, they are treated as random variables integrated over a prior law within the likelihood function; in the second, they are treated as bona-fide parameters, optimized to their ML estimates. The first approach is well-behaved, whereas the latter approach has serious statistical problems. Beyond a discussion of these issues, we explore the idea of using the random variable approach as the null against which to test for deviations from the neutral/nearly-neutral evolutionary regime. We present applications of this idea on a few data sets of protein-coding genes, and discuss how such methods fit within a long-term integrative modeling project. Location: MS 431 Math Science Bld.

University of Calgary and The Square Kilometre Array (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 12, 2014 - February 12, 2014

Within the University's strategic research theme on New Earth-Space technologies, astronomers, engineers and computer scientists are working on development of technology, methodology, and distributed computing for the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA). This world-wide observatory for radio waves from the cosmos will hosted by Australia and South Africa. Its ability to observe simultaneously a wide area of the sky at many radio frequencies will transform our understanding of black holes and gravity, the formation of structure in the universe, and the question "is anyone out there?". The SKA is a driver for innovation at Canadian universities and in industry on subjects related to receiver technology and processing of very large amounts of data. In this talk I will present the international SKA project, and discuss U of C leadership in this bold global enterprise to explore the cosmos. More Info: http://emeritus.ucalgary.ca

Arctic Speaker Series - Julie Cruikshank will discuss "Melting Glaciers and Emerging Histories in America's Far Northwest" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 12, 2014 - February 12, 2014

"Melting Glaciers and Emerging histories in America's Far Northwest" Memories of the Little Ice Age in northwestern North America remain vivid in oral histories transmitted in indigenous communities near the Alaska-Yukon border. Enlarged glaciers in the Saint Elias Range provided travel routes for Aboriginal traders crossing from coastal Alaska to the interior Yukon Plateau. Melting glaciers are now revealing material evidence that reinvigorates longstanding oral traditions about human history and environmental change. Recent discoveries and collaborations among Aboriginal peoples and scientists reinvigorate discussions about science, politics, and how local knowledge is co-produced in such encounters. LARC Speaker Series: Policing Protest in Argentina and Chile (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 11, 2014 - February 11, 2014

Despite the pervasiveness of electoral democracy in Latin America, the police continue to repress political protests. Why? Does the majority of the public support the repression of protests? If not, whom do they hold accountable, and how? Michelle Bonner, University of Victoria, offers a new perspective on police reform and democratic accountability by analyzing how people talk about the policing of protests in Argentina and Chile. Tracing the history of policing protests in the two countries and exploring current discourses, practices, and media coverage, she finds that talk most definitely does matter. Tuesday Feb. 11, 2014, Bianca Room, MSC, 12:30pm. This presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. This event is co-sponsored by the Latin American Research Centre, Dept. of History, Dept. of Political Science, and the Latin American Studies Program. More Info: http://larc.ucalgary.ca/

Neutral Mask Workshop Level I with Writer-in-Residence Sara Tilley (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 8, 2014 - February 8, 2014

No previous mask or performance experience is necessary. Limited space available. You must pre-register by emailing stilley@ucalgary.ca. Neutral mask allows you to take off all the other masks.” - Jan Henderson LEVEL I will focus on the essentials for work with the mask. We will use the mask as a clearing tool for the body, to help shed old habits, gestures and postures in order to be ready to take on new experiences. We will explore the moving meditation of the mask. Some work may occur with using the mask to channel new energy. For information on the LEVEL II workshop on Saturday, February 15, 2014, visit http://calgarywritersprogram.com/events/neutral-mask-workshop-II. Department of Economics Seminar Series - Sam Schulhofer-Wohl (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 7, 2014 - February 7, 2014

"Understanding the Long-Run Decline in Interstate Migration" Abstract: We analyze the secular decline in interstate migration in the United States between 1991 and 2011. Gross flows of people across states are about 10 times larger than net flows, yet have declined by around 50 percent over the past 20 years. We argue that the fall in migration is due to a decline in the geographic specificity of returns to occupations, together with an increase in workers' ability to learn about other locations before moving there, through information technology and inexpensive travel. These explanations find support in micro data on the distribution of earnings and occupations across space and on rates of repeat migration. Other explanations, including compositional changes, regional changes, and the rise in real incomes, do not t the data. We develop a model to formalize the geographic-specificity and information mechanisms and show that a calibrated version is consistent with cross-sectional and time-series patterns of migration, occupations, and incomes. Our mechanisms can explain at least one-third and possibly all of the decline in gross migration since 1991. Friday, February 7, 2014 3:00 - 4:30 pm SS 423

“The Time Saver Electric Washer and Other Tales: Time as a Tool of Social Power in Canadian Fiction” (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 7, 2014 - February 7, 2014

Dr. Paul Huebener is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of English, University of Calgary. His work investigates the cultural politics of time in Canada, asking how time functions socially as a tool of power, and how literature and other imaginative responses can help us gain and promote critical temporal literacy. "Time," Johannes Fabian writes, "much like language or money, is a carrier of significance, a form through which we define the content of relations between the Self and the Other." Indeed, the politics of time saturate all human affairs, from the conditions of labour and everyday forms of communication, to ethical norms and visions of the future. Dr. Huebener's work develops a set of tools and practices which foster a critical form of temporal literacy. Through readings of Canadian fiction, he identifies the importance of concepts including "time socialization stories," "temporal privilege," "temporal resistance," and "multitemporality" for understanding how time is wielded as a tool of power, and how imaginative responses are key to understanding and questioning this power. This talk will take place in Social Sciences 1153. Everyone is welcome.

Department of Economics Seminar Series - Snorre Kverndokk (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 6, 2014 - February 6, 2014

"The Trade-off Between Intra- and Intergenerational Equity in Climate Policy" Snorre Kverndokk, The Ragnar Frisch Centre for Economic Research Abstract: This paper focuses on two equity dimensions of climate policy, intra- and intergenerational, and analyzes the implications of equity preferences on climate policy, and on the production and consumption patterns in rich and poor countries. We develop a dynamic two-region model, in which each region suffers from global warming, but also has an inequality aversion over current consumption allocations. Inequality aversion generally lifts the consumption path of the poor region, while the rich region must take a greater share of the climate burden. Furthermore, with inequality aversion, the optimal climate policy generally leads to higher investment in clean capital in the North and in dirty capital in the South, thereby allowing the South to pollute more and develop faster. The optimal policy may even require the poor region to increase emissions relative to the uncoordinated business-as-usual case. Introducing local pollution and transfers confirm the main results. Design Matters with Andreu Arriola (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 5, 2014 - February 5, 2014

Andreu Arriola is the founder of Arriola & Fiol Arquitectes, a design firm established in Barcelona, Spain with his partner Camen Fiol in 1987. The practice aims to explore the interrelation between architecture and urbanism by shortening the traditional distance between the two disciplines. Projects are approached as an opportunity to develop creative solutions that fully address the needs and aspirations of users. An architect, urban designer, and landscape architect, Arriola earned his Master of Architecture from Columbia University. He is currently a visiting professor at the Academie van Bouwkunst van de HR&O in Rotterdam as well as La Sapienza in Rome and CLA University in Los Angeles. Arriola & Fiol see public space as a combined structure of different streets and squares. It is the essence of our coexistence, interaction and the redundancy that shared life brings. Public space is critical to designing structures for the mobility, leisure and representation of public activity. Design Matters with Arriola will explore The Arriola & Fiol's current Urban Civic Projects. His presentation will identify conflict areas in urban neighbourhoods and recommend practical solution to transform these areas into civic outdoor rooms. Tickets: Students are free.
