Andreu Arriola is the founder of Arriola & Fiol Arquitectes, a design firm established in Barcelona, Spain with his partner Camen Fiol in 1987. The practice aims to explore the interrelation between architecture and urbanism by shortening the traditional distance between the two disciplines. Projects are approached as an opportunity to develop creative solutions that fully address the needs and aspirations of users. An architect, urban designer, and landscape architect, Arriola earned his Master of Architecture from Columbia University. He is currently a visiting professor at the Academie van Bouwkunst van de HR&O in Rotterdam as well as La Sapienza in Rome and CLA University in Los Angeles. Arriola & Fiol see public space as a combined structure of different streets and squares. It is the essence of our coexistence, interaction and the redundancy that shared life brings. Public space is critical to designing structures for the mobility, leisure and representation of public activity. Design Matters with Arriola will explore The Arriola & Fiol’s current Urban Civic Projects. His presentation will identify conflict areas in urban neighbourhoods and recommend practical solution to transform these areas into civic outdoor rooms. Tickets: Students are free. Non-students $10 More Info: http://evds.ucalgary.ca/event/design-matters-andreu-arriola
