Within the University’s strategic research theme on New Earth-Space technologies, astronomers, engineers and computer scientists are working on development of technology, methodology, and distributed computing for the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA). This world-wide observatory for radio waves from the cosmos will hosted by Australia and South Africa. Its ability to observe simultaneously a wide area of the sky at many radio frequencies will transform our understanding of black holes and gravity, the formation of structure in the universe, and the question “is anyone out there?”. The SKA is a driver for innovation at Canadian universities and in industry on subjects related to receiver technology and processing of very large amounts of data. In this talk I will present the international SKA project, and discuss U of C leadership in this bold global enterprise to explore the cosmos. More Info: http://emeritus.ucalgary.ca
