The Salt of the Earth: Socio-Ecological Contradictions of the Petrochemical Revolution in Venezuela (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 4, 2014 - March 4, 2014

In 2007, former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez launched the petrochemical revolution, a modernization strategy geared towards the transformation of fossil fuels into different forms of social development. Central to this strategy was the creation of ‘Petrocasas’ – houses made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) – as a way to address the country’s housing deficit. This initiative required the state’s careful attention to the metabolism of economy and nature, in particular by obligating it to mediate the relationship between the space-time dimensions of petro-capitalism and the space-time dimensions of ecology along the hydrocarbon commodity chain. This presentation examines the metabolism of fossil fuel production in the creation of Petrocasas as an articulation of national and multinational capital investment, technology, and the environment. Focusing on the fishing community of Ancón de Iturre as a case study, it explores the socio-ecological contradictions produced by petrochemical processes arising from the inconsistencies between the different forces governing technology, social relations, and environmental conditions of production. To pursue this objective, this presentation analyzes: (1) the social, political and economic rationales behind the petrochemical revolution; (2) the way in which the transformation of natural gas creates a specific set of tensions that may be obscured by the commodification process itself; and (3) the metabolic processes involved in the petrochemical production of plastics. I argue that not only does the petrochemical sector play an important role in the commodification of fossil fuels, but it is also one of the most important actors in the modernization strategies of most petro-states today. In this context, then, I suggest that petrochemical industries become vehicles of capital conversion and accumulation. Category: Other Event
Dates: February 28, 2014 - February 28, 2014

CanWest Global Speakers Series *no registration required, seating limited, snacks and refreshments will be available Please join the Department of Communication and Culture on Friday, February 28, 2014 for the CanWest Global Speakers Series featuring Jennifer Pozner, author of Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth about Guilty Pleasure TV. Do you ever wonder… Why reality TV frames humiliation of women as the “perfect fairy tale romance”? If men should be valued for more than just the size of their … wallets? Why women of color are typecast as deceitful divas and “ghetto” sluts? …Then don’t miss this rousing multimedia presentation! With humor, razor-sharp analysis and provocative clips from shows like The Bachelor,America’s Next Top Model and Flavor of Love, media critic and author Jennifer L. Pozner exposes the editing tricks and ideological agendas producers and advertisers use to create a world in which women not only have no real choices, they don’t even want any. Pozner pushes back against “reality” TV’s regressive stereotypes about women, men, love, beauty, and race and class in America, and reveals how unreal so-called “unscripted programming” really is. You’ll never see mating, modeling and makeover shows the same way again… and you’ll laugh—a lot!

Department of Economics Seminar Series - Kasey Buckles (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 28, 2014 - February 28, 2014

The Effect of College Education on Mortality Abstract: We exploit exogenous variation in college completion induced by draft-avoidance behavior during the Vietnam War to examine the impact of college completion on adult mortality. Our preferred estimates imply that increasing college completion rates from the level of the state with the lowest induced rate to the highest would decrease cumulative mortality by 28 percent relative to the mean. Most of the reduction in mortality is from deaths due to cancer and heart disease. We also explore potential mechanisms, including differential earnings, health insurance, and health behaviors, using data from the Census, ACS, and NHIS.

Variable Selection in Log-linear Birnbaum-Saunders Regression Model for High-dimensional Survival Data via the Elastic Net and Stochastic EM (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 28, 2014 - February 28, 2014

Abstract: Birnbaum-Saunders (BS) distribution is broadly used to model failure times in reliability and survival analysis. In this paper, we propose a variable selection procedure in a log-linear BS regression model for high-dimensional survival data. We introduce a path wise algorithm via cyclical coordinate descent based on the elastic net penalty. To deal with censored survival data, we iteratively run a combination of stochastic EM algorithm (StEM) and variable selection procedure to generate pseudo-complete data and select variables until convergence. Treating pseudo-complete data as uncensored data via StEM simplifies computation and makes it possible to incorporate iterative least squares for parameter estimation and variable selection simultaneously. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method using simulated and real data sets.

Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) Hackathon (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 28, 2014 - March 2, 2014

The Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) is the first national Open Data hackathon in Canada. It is a 48-hour competition hosted by XMG, one of the largest indie mobile gaming studios in Canada, and supported by the Government of Canada. CODE will take place from February 28th – March 2nd 2014. Canadian post-secondary students, entrepreneurs and innovators participate to develop applications utilizing federal government data from the Canadian Open Data Portal (http://www.data.gc.ca) with the goal of improving the lives of Canadians. The applications will need to conform to a theme that will be announced minutes before the appathon begins and then: ready, set, develop! 48-Hours of hardcore coding! Those participating in the CODE hackathon can apply to attend a HUB at the University of Calgary or they can participate remotely from their homes, schools or their local coffee shop. At the end of the CODE hackathon, participants submit their completed applications online to be evaluated. The teams that submitted the top 15 applications (as judged by a review panel) will be invited to the CODE Grand Finale event on March 28th 2014, where they will pitch their apps during a live judging event to a panel of industry experts and potential investors. The goal is to connect the young entrepreneurs directly to investment firms and venture capitalists to ensure their apps (or ideas) are brought to market. All it takes is one great success story to inspire! The winners – the teams making the top three applications as declared by the judging panel at the Grand Finale event – will be awarded with prize packages including cash awards, physical prizes and in-kind services. The winning applications may go on to be released commercially either independently by the participants or in co-operation with a third party. CALGARY INSTITUTE FOR THE HUMANITIES RESIDENT FELLOWS LECTURE SERIES presents: Professor Antonio Franceschet THE EARLY FATE OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT Can the international community make good on its promises of “never again” for mass atrocities like genocide? Is the rule of law possible at the global level? It is too soon to say whether the world’s first permanent international criminal court, established in 2002, will live up to its promise. Early signs are mixed because of the limited number of prosecutions achieved and the striking resistance of African state leaders to the court’s authority. Drawing on Kantian political theory, this talk focuses on the problems the International Criminal Court faces in light of its limited authority and power in the global system. BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES BUILDING, FIFTH FLOOR, ROOM 587 THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. A RECEPTION WILL FOLLOW. ALL ARE WELCOME.

Location:

Biological Science Building Rm 587

EES Seminar Series Talk on The Canadian Electricity Sectors (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 24, 2014 - February 24, 2014

An activity framed within the University of Calgary's Energy Research Strategy, "Energy Innovations for Today and Tomorrow" Dr. Pierre-Olivier Pineau's talk will discuss "The Canadian Electricity Sectors Make No Sense: A Few Steps to Get Richer and Greener." Summary All ten Canadian provinces have different approaches to electricity markets – from heavy regulation to a high level of competition. This fragmented approach to electricity supply, although historically understandable, makes little sense from an economic, environmental and even social perspective. This talk will cover various areas where we fail to adequately manage our investments in and use of the power system. Policy avenues for change, leading simultaneously to greater wealth and lower environmental impacts, will be presented and discussed. Calgary Distinguished Writers Program presents An Evening with Neil Gaiman (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 24, 2014 - February 24, 2014

Legions of lit-lovers and the ranks of comic book fandom alike will want to pencil the evening of February 24, 2014 into their calendars now, with news that legendary English author Neil Gaiman is coming to town. The celebrated writer – who counts the Newbery and Carnegie medals and the Hugo, Will Eisner and Bram Stoker awards among his accomplishments – is set to give a reading at MacEwan Hall as the 2014 Distinguished Visiting Writer for the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program. Gaiman first found international fame in the late 1980s when he conceived the groundbreaking comic book, The Sandman. The adult-themed horror fantasy series is one of the principle works credited with helping bring the long maligned comic book genre a level of literary respect previously unimagined. A new mini-series called The Sandman: Overture, a prequel to the original series, will be released just in time for Halloween on October 30th. Gaiman's achievements are by no means limited to the comic book genre. Among his best selling novels are Neverwhere, Stardust, Anansi Boys and American Gods, the latter of which is being adapted into an HBO TV series. He's also a prolific writer of books for young readers. These include M Is For Magic, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, The Wolves in the Walls, Blueberry Girl, Coraline and The Graveyard Book. The Graveyard Book – inspired in part, says Gaiman, by The Jungle Book, "with that same equation of boy, orphaned, growing up somewhere else, but (set in a) graveyard," – has won the UK's Booktrust Prize for Teenage Fiction and the Newbery Medal, the highest honour given in the US for children's literature. It also garnered the UK CILIP Carnegie Medal, making Gaiman the first author ever to win the Newbery and Carnegie medals with the same book. A film adaptation of The Graveyard Book is in production. Other Gaiman works adapted for film and television have included Coraline, Stardust and Neverwhere. Gaiman himself has written and directed for the screen and a 2011 episode of Dr. Who, "The Doctor's Wife," garnered rave reviews. "The CDWP is absolutely thrilled to be able to bring Neil Gaiman to campus," says Bart Beaty, head of the English department and Acting Chair of the CDWP. "In the world of contemporary speculative fiction, he is at the absolute pinnacle of form. More than any other fantasy writer, he is redefining the boundaries of the genre." As a Distinguished Visiting Writer for the CDWP, Gaiman joins a long line of literary luminaries who have taken part in the annual event before him, including Margaret Atwood, Art Spiegelman, Oliver Sacks, Deepa Mehta and Michael Ondaatje. TICKETS ARE NOW SOLD OUT. (Admittance to this event is free, but Eventbrite tickets are required and seating is limited. Free tickets will become available at noon on Thursday, October 24, 2013 here. Attendees can order a maximum of 2 tickets, and may not order more than once. Any duplicate or additional orders will be deleted. Tickets are for general admission. Tickets are transferable, non-refundable, and must be printed out and brought to the event in order to gain entry.) For the Facebook event, click here. To visit Neil Gaiman's website, click here. Frontiers in Veterinary Medicine Seminar - Dr. Michael Murtaugh presents "Molecular complexity of anti-PRRSV in swine" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 21, 2014 - February 21, 2014

Outbred populations of humans and animals show extensive individual variation in the efficacy of immune responses to natural infections and vaccinations, even though the genetic and biochemical mechanisms used to generate diversity within individual animals have an enormous capacity for recognition of antigenic structures. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), which causes a serious disease in pigs, elicits highly variable levels of immunity. To better understand the basis for this variation, we have characterized antibody repertoire formation and diversity in the pig, since humoral immunity is an integral component of anti-viral immunity. Although antibody diversity is considered to be virtually limitless, there are substantial individual differences in light and heavy chain gene segment usage, hypersomatic mutation, and response to infection. Elucidation of immunoglobulin structures associated with highly protective immune responses will help guide improved vaccine development and provide useful models for other animal species and humans. Lunch will follow from 1:00 - 2:00 pm in the Health Sciences Centre Atrium as well as in CSB 104.

Location:

Theatre 3 Health Sciences Centre and videoconferenced to CSB 104

Speaker:

Dr. Michael Murtaugh, Director of Graduate Studies in Comparative & Molecular Biosciences at the University of Minnesota, will discuss the molecular complexity of anti-PRRSV in swine. This seminar ties into the UCVM strategic research priority area of infectious, zoonotic, and emerging diseases. Dr. Murtaugh’s research focuses on immunological tool development for food animals.

Sigma Xi Seminar - Nanomedicine: Designing the Perfect Nanoparticles for Therapy and Diagnostics (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 20, 2014 - February 20, 2014

Nanoparticles are increasingly used in medical applications such as drug delivery, imaging and biodiagnostics, particularly for cancer. The design of nanoparticles for tumor delivery has been largely empirical, owing to a lack of quantitative data on angiogenic tissue sequestration. We provide evidence that designing the magic bullet against cancer is possible and even probable. Our findings imply that it is possible to tune nanoparticle pharmacokinetics simply by adjusting nanoparticle size. Furthermore, we examine the properties of nanoparticles that can be exploited to release drugs. Finally, we will present a novel technique that we have developed to measure hybrid nanoassembly in situ. The purpose of Sigma Xi, Scientific Research Society, is to enhance the sceintific research enterprise and we emphasize communicating to an audience with wide and varied scientific interest. All are welcome to attend our seminars. When - Thursday 20th February - 12-12:50 pm Where - Biological Sciences Room 211 (the building closest to the LRT station)

Projecting Future Change from Archaeological Data: Evidence for Climate-Related Contaminant Fluctuations in Holocene Marine Arch (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 19, 2014 - February 19, 2014

Biogeochemical analysis of total mercury (tHg) and d13C/d15N ratios in the bone collagen of archaeologically recovered marine fauna from coastal Alaska shows high tHg levels during early/mid-Holocene (ca. 52-4600 rcy BP). This is linked to glacial melting and sea-level rise at the end of the Pleistocene. Under current conditions of climate warming, these processes may lead to future increased Hg bioaccumulation in marine species and by extension their human consumers. I discuss the value of length time series for understanding ecosystem structure and function and change over time, and the connections among ocean processes, sea level rise, and prehistoric human health and future health risks. Neutral Mask Workshop Level II with Writer-in-Residence Sara Tilley (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 15, 2014 - February 15, 2014

No previous mask or performance experience is necessary. Limited space available. You must pre-register by emailing stilley@ucalgary.ca. You must take LEVEL I first to attend this session. For information on the LEVEL I workshop on Saturday, February 8, 2014, visit http://calgarywritersprogram.com/events/neutral-mask-workshop-I. Dress in comfortable clothing suitable for movement and bring either a yoga mat or thick blanket. NEUTRAL MASK is a powerful tool for any creative person—it allows you to simplify, to reconnect to the physical body, and to live in the present moment. The neutral mask pares us down to the essential. It is a beginning place from which to approach any new character or project, a form of moving meditation. It encourages us to take the risk of paying full attention to the present moment. This work is beneficial to all artists—actors, writers, musicians, dancers, visual artists - as well as to anyone who is curious about mask. “Neutral mask allows those who wear it to get in touch with their core being, their most authentic, intuitive self. The mask encourages a sense of wholeness, of physical, emotional, and intellectual centeredness. In the mask one lives in the moment, questioning nothing, yet empowered to make changes as needed. It integrates mind and body, clarifies impulse and allows the wearer to experience the power and increased presence that come from absolute self-acceptance. Energy that formerly would be wasted on self-doubt and critical comments about a given situation is now used on problem solving. Neutral mask allows you to take off all the other masks.” - Jan Henderson LEVEL II will take the neutral mask experience further into its application as a sponge for energy and experience. Using the mask to channel different natural energies and to create the foundations for character, this session will build on the work done in Level I (you must take Level I first to attend this session). Sara Tilley has studied neutral mask with Ian Wallace, Dean Gilmour and Jill Courtney. She is a writer, actor, clown and physical theatre teacher who works with artists and non-artists in Neutral Mask and Pochinko Clown Through Mask. This workshop is offered free of charge to participants thanks to the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program, where Sara is currently Writer-in-Residence, with partnership from the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary. "Because You Matter" Initiative Kick-Off Walk Wrap-Up (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 14, 2014 - February 14, 2014

The "Because You Matter" initiative is designed to encourage a greater sense of support and increase the likelihood of improved mental health on the University of Calgary campus by reminding all members of our community (students, faculty, staff, alumni) that they matter to others enough to ask for support if they need it, but they also can be the person to matter to someone else by reaching out and offering their support. A 24 hour kick-off walk (0.5km, drop-in basis starting in the South Courtyard of MacEwan Student Centre) has been happening since February 13th at 1pm and will end at 1pm on February 14th. At this time there will be a wrap-up event with Dr. Elizabeth Cannon and Adriana Tulissi from the SU Wellness Centre speaking briefly. All are invited and encouraged to attend the wrap up, but also to complete the walk prior to 1pm.

Language Put to Work: Labour and Collective Organization in the Media and Communication Industries (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 14, 2014 - February 14, 2014

ABOUT TRIPLE C - The Triple C Speakers Series is a monthly colloquium hosted by the Department of Communication and Culture presenting new research and special interest topics in the Social Sciences and Humanities to the University of Calgary community. The events are free and followed by a reception. Language Put to Work: Labour and Collective Organization in the Media and Communication Industries. Dr. Enda Brophy will engage with labour conditions, worker resistance and collective organization in the media and communication industries. Working in these sectors and joining the “creative class,” runs a dominant narrative, offers a possibility of passionate work, autonomy, and workplaces with minimal hierarchy. Yet, the reality of labour in the contemporary creative industries is often markedly different, characterized by increasing competitiveness, chronic overwork, endemic unpaid labour, and rampant unstable employment. The presentation will start with a discussion of the emergent collective responses to labour precarity by contract workers, interns, and other flexworkers. It will then move on to an overview of the remarkable rise of the transnational workforce toiling in call centres—one of the fastest growing and paradigmatic workspaces of our time. As a result of their steady meshing into the circuits of the global economy, the growth of call centres over the last quarter century has produced notable shifts in the composition of labour forces across many regions:Language Put to Work investigates emergent forms of labour resistance, conflict and collective organization along the digital assembly lines on three continents.

Dr. Enda Brophy is Assistant Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. He is currently completing a manuscript on labour resistance in global call centres (Language Put to Work: Labour and Communicative Capitalism) and collaborating on a SSHRC-supported research project, Cultural Workers Organize (2011-2014). His translation of Gigi Roggero’s The Production of Living Knowledge: Crisis of the University and Transformation of Labor in Europe and North America was published by Temple University Press.

Department of Economics Seminar Series - David Johnson (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 14, 2014 - February 14, 2014

"Can't Tough This! Willingness to Keep "Dirty Money" Abstract: Traditionally, larger than equilibrium allocations by proposers in Dictator Games (gifts) have been explained by aspects of altruism, reciprocity, and fairness. However, this assumes the gift to be mutually desirable to the proposer and responder. Giving may also be driven by a desire of the proposer to rid herself of the gift or to generate obligation on the part of the responder. We examine this by using three sources to generate the endowment in a Dictator Game: (1) undergraduate students, (2) Amazon Mechanical Turk workers, and (3) users of a racially/ethnically charged web forum. This endowment is provided to subjects in a traditional laboratory experiment. We find no significant differences in the proposer allocation decisions across the three sources. Rather we find that proposer affect toward the source of the endowment affects the allocation decision. Our results suggest that decision making can be strongly influenced by the provider of income shocks. February 14, 2014 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. SS 423

Models of Protein-coding Gene Evolution (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 14, 2014 - February 14, 2014

Abstract: Codon substitution models have traditionally been used to measure selective pressures in protein-coding genes by evaluating the ratio of rates of nonsynonymous (amino acid replacing) to synonymous (silent) substitutions. More recent approaches have explored the idea of explicitly modeling site-specific purifying selection at the amino acid level. Loosely speaking, with such models, substitutions at a given position occur at the neutral or near-neutral rate when they do not alter the amino acid encoded, or when they correspond to replacements within a sub-set of suitable amino acids---substitutions to ill-suited amino acids have much lower rates. Two perspectives have been taken with regards to the amino acid variables in such models: in the first, they are treated as random variables integrated over a prior law within the likelihood function; in the second, they are treated as bona-fide parameters, optimized to their ML estimates. The first approach is well-behaved, whereas the latter approach has serious statistical problems. Beyond a discussion of these issues, we explore the idea of using the random variable approach as the null against which to test for deviations from the neutral/nearly-neutral evolutionary regime. We present applications of this idea on a few data sets of protein-coding genes, and discuss how such methods fit within a long-term integrative modeling project. Location: MS 431 Math Science Bld.
