Description: Event Day Volunteers Needed The 2023 Airdrie to Olds MS Bike is taking place Saturday and Sunday, June 24 & 25, 2023. The ride begins at TransCanada Turbines in Airdrie and ends at the Olds College in Olds. MS Bike is the largest fundraising cycling series in North America. Cyclists of all ages and fitness levels across Canada come together each year to end Canada’s disease: multiple sclerosis. With hundreds of participants, volunteers are needed to help with every aspect of the entire event. This is a great opportunity to make an impact in your community using your talent and time. There are various areas on site (Airdrie to Olds and in between) where volunteer help is needed to ensure that this event runs smoothly and participants have a great experience while they are walking to raise critical funds to support those effected by MS. Areas include: Site set up/wrap up, parking control, participant check in area, checkpoint attendants, food & beverage area, kids activity area, start/finish line cheering, volunteer check‐in, luggage collection & transportation, bike rack building, bike storage area, beer gardens and many others Interested? Description: What is YouQuest? YouQuest is a community for people with young-onset dementia (diagnosed under 65 years) and their families. Our purpose is to promote health and well-being by ensuring access to recreation therapy, counselling, and peer support. YouQuest offers a place to belong. It is a reliable support network for caregivers, providing them with a break from caring responsibilities. A registered charity, YouQuest organizes activities for people in this younger population group. Our recreation therapy staff and volunteers provide functional support to help participants achieve well-being, learn new skills, and maintain their independence. Who are the YouQuest Participants? YouQuest is designed to appeal to younger people with dementia who want to be active and social in a community. Inclusion criteria includes: • Diagnosis of dementia and/or symptoms prior to 65 • Safe in an unsecured environment • Self-ambulatory and medically stable • Independent with meals and medication • Willing and able to participate safely in individual and group recreation activities What's a Typical Day at YouQuest? • Interacting with participants and staff as part of our team • Actively participating in recreation activities • Anticipating participant needs and learning their life stories • Support participant independence and decision-making abilities Service days: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm Volunteer Shifts: 3+ hours morning, afternoon, or full day Schedule: Weekly, monthly (your choice!) Description: EXPRESSTIVAL August 26, LOT 6 Explore art in Calgary in a way you have never experienced before. This August 26, in partnership with the Downtown Association, ART SPOT is throwing a massive freeform art event in downtown Calgary! This interactive exhibition will feature hundreds of local artists, showcasing their art in a freeform environment. Artists are given a space to express themselves, in way of performance, exhibition, installation, demos, workshops and so much more. ART SPOT is a non-profit artist/volunteer run organization that has been a home to emerging artists since 2008. Most known for the notorious “Under $100 Art Show”; which, in it’s 14th year of operation, featured over 200 local artists and brought out over 4000 attendees, and with over 100 art events under it's belt, ART SPOT is an integral part of the Calgary art scene. Expresstival is intended to break down barriers in the art world and to accept all artists from all walks of life. Artists are encouraged to express themselves freely, without boundaries and to create connections with the people of Calgary. Description: Volunteer youth mentors will enhance intercultural understanding and provide immigrant girls with opportunities for personal growth and community involvement. Mentors will inspire youth to become engaged in their communities through a mentor/mentee relationship. And in turn, mentors are often inspired by their mentees and will develop many skills from interpersonal relationships, communication, trust, and more. SUMMARY OF POSITION The youth mentor will provide support for the social, academic, and personal development of immigrant girls through one-on-one mentorship sessions to facilitate their integration process. A minimum time commitment of 4 hours per month (can be broken into a few meetings) for one full year between April-March. Description: Volunteers within this program have a unique opportunity to support immigrant women, and be a part of watching them develop new friendships, enhance their confidence in speaking English while learning more about Canadian culture. Volunteers will be inspired and encouraged by participants while developing facilitation and leadership skills. SUMMARY OF POSITION Facilitators will partner with a co-facilitator to plan and lead group activities designed to build English speaking and listening skills of immigrant women. Activities include; discussions, games, grammar/ vocabulary, and more. Group sessions are held in different community locations or are delivered online. The time commitment is once a week for the two-hour meetings plus time to prepare. The minimum required commitment is 6 months. Available shifts are mornings (10am-12pm), afternoons (1-3pm), evenings (5-7pm). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Meet with the Program Coordinator for an initial information session Observe at least one group session prior to being able to volunteer Attend a three-hour training specific to the role Create a safe environment for women to make friends and socialize Select appropriate learning themes based on the identified needs of the participants Develop and create group activities in addition to following the provided curriculum and resources Relay information about various local supports, services, and cultural experiences Register new participants, record attendance and a weekly summary of group activities Support other NFNG events such as guest speaker presentations and field trips STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE Maintain a professional approach that is aligned with CIWA values Demonstrate a high level of initiative and enthusiasm Maintain confidentiality at all times Must be reliable, timely, and committed to the role QUALIFICATIONS Active, friendly, patient, engaged, flexible, and enthusiastic Desire to help immigrant women improve their skills Ability to work in a multicultural environment with people from diverse backgrounds Cultural awareness and sensitivity towards immigrant women English as a first language or advanced English communication skills (Benchmark 8 or higher) Teaching/group facilitation experience is an asset but not necessary Excellent computer skills and experience using online learning platforms such as Zoom Must have lived in Canada for at least two years and have good knowledge of Canadian culture [/et_pb_blurb]

Youth Mentor
Organization: Calgary Immigrant Women's AssociationCategory: Children & Youth
Description: Volunteer youth mentors will enhance intercultural understanding and provide immigrant girls with opportunities for personal growth and community involvement. Mentors will inspire youth to become engaged in their communities through a mentor/mentee relationship. And in turn, mentors are often inspired by their mentees and will develop many skills from interpersonal relationships, communication, trust, and more. SUMMARY OF POSITION The youth mentor will provide support for the social, academic, and personal development of immigrant girls through one-on-one mentorship sessions to facilitate their integration process. A minimum time commitment of 4 hours per month (can be broken into a few meetings) for one full year between April-March. New Friends and Neighbourhood Groups Facilitator
Organization: Calgary Immigrant Women's AssociationCategory: Social and Community Service
Description: Volunteers within this program have a unique opportunity to support immigrant women, and be a part of watching them develop new friendships, enhance their confidence in speaking English while learning more about Canadian culture. Volunteers will be inspired and encouraged by participants while developing facilitation and leadership skills. SUMMARY OF POSITION Facilitators will partner with a co-facilitator to plan and lead group activities designed to build English speaking and listening skills of immigrant women. Activities include; discussions, games, grammar/ vocabulary, and more. Group sessions are held in different community locations or are delivered online. The time commitment is once a week for the two-hour meetings plus time to prepare. The minimum required commitment is 6 months. Available shifts are mornings (10am-12pm), afternoons (1-3pm), evenings (5-7pm). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Meet with the Program Coordinator for an initial information session Observe at least one group session prior to being able to volunteer Attend a three-hour training specific to the role Create a safe environment for women to make friends and socialize Select appropriate learning themes based on the identified needs of the participants Develop and create group activities in addition to following the provided curriculum and resources Relay information about various local supports, services, and cultural experiences Register new participants, record attendance and a weekly summary of group activities Support other NFNG events such as guest speaker presentations and field trips STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE Maintain a professional approach that is aligned with CIWA values Demonstrate a high level of initiative and enthusiasm Maintain confidentiality at all times Must be reliable, timely, and committed to the role QUALIFICATIONS Active, friendly, patient, engaged, flexible, and enthusiastic Desire to help immigrant women improve their skills Ability to work in a multicultural environment with people from diverse backgrounds Cultural awareness and sensitivity towards immigrant women English as a first language or advanced English communication skills (Benchmark 8 or higher) Teaching/group facilitation experience is an asset but not necessary Excellent computer skills and experience using online learning platforms such as Zoom Must have lived in Canada for at least two years and have good knowledge of Canadian culture [/et_pb_blurb]
