Tracing An Ecstatic Movement: The Recent Cinema of Terrence Malick (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 4, 2014 - April 4, 2014

Please join the Department of Communication and Culture Film Studies Program and the Calgary Institute for the Humanities to hear the second of two talks on film--Dr.Lee Carruthers' talk entitled "Tracing An Ecstatic Movement: The Recent Cinema of Terrence Malick” Abstract: The cinema of Terrence Malick has garnered much critical attention on the basis of its intellectual and aesthetic richness. Within the available literature, however, there is a tendency to hold these valences separate, suppressing the film-specific qualities of Malick’s work so as to privilege a generalized thematic content. Thus Malick’s films are broadly characterized as ‘poetic’ or ‘philosophical’, yet are rarely assessed as dynamic experiences of cinema. Given the aesthetic depth of the director’s corpus, this oversight is surprising. More specifically, this critical lapse motivates a question that is significant for philosophers and film scholars alike: how can we discover what is profound in Malick’s cinema — its philosophical inflection, perhaps— while engaging its distinctive filmic character? Carruthers’ lecture responds to this question through a close analysis of the most recent films, The Tree of Life (USA, 2011), and To the Wonder, (USA, 2012), locating the philosophical import of Malick’s work in its sensuous orchestration of sounds and images. Bio: Dr.Lee Carruthers’ monograph, Doing Time: Timeliness and Contemporary Cinema is forthcoming with SUNY Press. This film-phenomenological study analyzes the rich experiences of temporality that contemporary film generates for viewers, examining the cinema of Terrence Malick, François Ozon, Steven Soderbergh, and Tsai Ming-liang. Presently, she is developing a new book exclusively on Malick’s cinema.

Department of Economics Seminar Series - John Kennan (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 4, 2014 - April 4, 2014

"Immigration Restrictions and Labor Market Skills" Abstract: Differences in income levels across countries are generally attributed to differences in productivity. In studies of internal migration (e.g. within the U.S.), it is commonly observed that skilled workers move much more than unskilled workers. The paper analyzes the implications of such differential migration, using a model in which efficiency differences are labor-augmenting, and free trade in product markets leads to factor price equalization, so that wages are equal across countries when measured in efficiency units. Relaxation of immigration restrictions increases the effective supply of labor on the world market, and differential migration implies that there may be an increase in the ratio of skilled to unskilled labor; but skill levels are relatively low in less productive countries, and the data indicate that the net effect is that free migration in fact decreases the ratio of skilled to unskilled labor on the world market. The effects on wages depend on elasticities of substitution, but these effects are in any case surprisingly small, while the income gains for migrants (net of migration costs) are very large.

Disturbing the Undisturbed: Precedents in Law & Literature (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 4, 2014 - April 4, 2014

"stare decisis et non quieta movere" (let sleeping dogs lie) All aspects of literary style, provenance and interpretation elicit judgments of adequacy and commensurability, especially when they treat situations that are unfair or incommensurable. From the modest "mot juste" – the word perfectly suited to its task – to the greatest moral claims – such as justifying the ways of God to man – the scales and the sword, the precision and the force of justice are at issue. This paper offers one approach to literary justice. It studies how appealing to precedents illustrates the convergence and divergence of literary and legal judgments: two co-operating but competing forms of judiciousness, two ways of maintaining a jurisdiction, of summoning or flouting authority, and of conjuring the unprecedented. This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

Philosophy Speakers Program: Andrea Woody (Washington) "Re-Orienting Discussions of Scientific Explanation" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 28, 2014 - March 28, 2014

Philosophy of science offers a rich lineage of analysis concerning the nature of scientific explanation, but the vast majority of this work, aiming to provide an analysis of the relation that binds a given explanans to its corresponding explanandum, presumes the proper analytic focus rests at the level of individual explanations. There are, however, other questions we could ask about explanation in science, such as: What role(s) does explanatory discourse play in science? Shifting focus away from explanations, as achievements, toward explaining, as a coordinated activity of communities, what I label the functional perspective aims to reveal how the practice of explanatory discourse functions within scientific communities given their more comprehensive sets of practices. In this talk, I will outline the functional perspective, argue that taking the functional perspective can reveal important methodological roles for explanation in science, and consequently, that beginning with this question provides resources for developing more adequate responses to traditional concerns. In particular, through examples in chemistry, I will emphasize the normative status of explanations within scientific communities and discuss how such status underwrites a compelling rationale for explanatory power as a theoretical virtue. Andrea Woody (PhD Pittsburgh) is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is also adjunct faculty in Dance, History, and Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies. She currently serves as Associate Editor for Philosophy of Science and Historical Studies in the Natural Sciences, and is a member of the Editorial Board of Foundations of Chemistry and the organizing committee for the Society for the Philosophy of Science in Practice (SPSP). Her current research in the philosophy of science involves (i) developing "the functional perspective" on scientific explanation, (ii) analyzing diagrammatic, graphical, and pictorial representations as part of a larger project examining how pragmatic techniques for manipulating scientific theory are developed and justified by scientific communities, and (iii) seeing how issues of explanation and representation are related to one another. These projects interface with traditional discussions concerning explanation, representation, reduction, theory change, and disciplinary formation. In aesthetics, her work focuses on the performing arts, considering issues related to the identity of performing artworks, the virtues of live performance, and the nature of site-specific artworks.

Department of Economics Seminar Series - Melanie Morten (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 28, 2014 - March 28, 2014

"Migration, Roads and Labor Market Integration: Evidence from a Planned Capital City" Abstract: Wages in developing countries differ greatly across sector and across space. In Brazil, real wages are on average 41% higher in the capital city, Brasilia, than outside the capital. The wage gap remains large even within skill group (31%) and within industry (22%). These large differences in returns to labor present a spatial arbitrage puzzle: why do people not migrate to equalize wages across space? We propose one explanation: it is costly to move. We use the construction of a planned capital city, Brasilia, to generate plausibly exogenous variation in the national road network, and examine the role of roads in facilitating labor market integration. Using a database of gross inter-municipality flows, we construct and estimate a spatial equilibrium model where migration is costly. The results yield that access to roads is a key determinant of migration. Reducing the marginal cost of traveling by 50% would increase migration rates to 16%, from a base of 8.7%. The effect is reduced by 10% once the general equilibrium effects of migration are computed.

Inferences in Bivariate Multinomial Models (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 28, 2014 - March 28, 2014

Abstract: Analyzing multivariate categorical data is an important and practical research topic. Even though there exist many studies on the analysis of bivariate (possibly multivariate) categorical data, the modeling of correlations among the bivariate multinomial variables is, however, not adequately addressed. In this thesis, we develop three correlation models for bivariate multinomial data. The first model accommodates fully specified marginal probabilities and uses a bivariate normal type conditional probability relationship to model the correlations of the bivariate multinomial variables. Next, we propose a random effects based familial type model to accommodate the correlations, where conditional on the random effects the marginal probabilities are fully specified. The third model is developed by considering the marginal probabilities of one variable as fully specified, and using conditional multinomial logistic type probability model to accommodate correlations. The estimation of the parameters for all three models is discussed in details through both simulation studies and analysis of real data.

Drama as Conduit to Health and Wellbeing for Young and Old (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 27, 2014 - March 27, 2014

The Arts and Humanities for Health and Wellbeing (AHHW) research group is hosting a public event at the university March 27 exploring the powerful effect drama can have on health and wellness. The event’s two speakers, David Barnet and Andrea Halwas, will share findings from their personal experience and from their research with diverse groups of people and a variety of performance arts. Barnet, a professor of drama from the University of Alberta, specializes in community-based theatre and acting. His research considers the realization of creative aging through theatre and he works in partnership with GeriActors and Friends, an intergenerational theatre company in which actors develop original plays based on stories and issues from their lives. David is currently concluding a CIHR research project: Theatre as a Pathway to Healthy Aging. Halwas is a doctoral candidate in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program at the University of Calgary. Her research focus is tragedy and the therapeutic effects that drama can have on individuals facing difficult life experiences. Halwas’ work aims to assist individuals to find meaning in their lives through the medium of theatre; she is a published playwright and the creator and facilitator of a children’s drama therapy puppet show entitled The Nicki and Little Bear Show which helps children and their families deal with loss and grief. The AHHW research group studies the intersections between arts and health, it advances interdisciplinary research and promotes health and wellbeing.

Archaeology Beyond the Academy - Nancy Saxberg (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 27, 2014 - March 27, 2014

"My Long-term Relationship with the Rossdale Site" The Rossdale site (FjPi-63) is believed to be the location of the second and fourth phases of NWCo. Fort Augustus and HBCo. Edmonton House. Situated in the North Saskatchewan River Valley near downtown Edmonton, Rossdale has been home to various municipal and industrial developments for over a century. This more recent land use has resulted in extensive disturbance to significant archaeological deposits, although explorations on the site since the 1980s have shown that intact vestiges occasionally occur. Consistent management of these historical resources over the past 15 years has resulted in a better understanding of the patterning of the nineteenth-century occupation. This paper is a discussion of the major discoveries made as a result of CRM studies on the site. For more information, please visit the Archaeology Beyond the Academy webpage.

Faculty of Sience EES Seminar Series talk - "Science, Values and Decision-Making in Climate Policy" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 24, 2014 - March 24, 2014

An activity framed within the University of Calgary's Energy Research Strategy "Energy Innovations for Today and Tomorrow". Join us Monday, March 24th for Dr. Thomas Dietz's Faculty of Science EES Seminar Series presentation. Title: "Science, Values and Decision-Making in Climate Policy." Time: 3:00 PM Location: EEEL Building, Room 210 SUMMARY: Decision-making around climate change adaptation and mitigation requires an integration of facts and values. Science has evolved mechanisms that lead to respected understandings of facts. Methods such as risk analysis help to take account of scientific uncertainty in decision making. Processes for linking scientific analysis with public deliberation are often used as part of the policy process. However, much less progress has been made in finding appropriate ways to integrate values with facts. In order to develop better approaches to deal with both facts and values, we need to acknowledge multiple forms of expertise about both facts and values, explore sources of uncertainty about values, and consider tools for handling not only value differences but also value uncertainty. These ideas, and the theoretical and empirical literature that underpin them, are explored in the context of adaptive risk management to deal with climate change. For more information about this the talk and Dr. Dietz please go to EES Seminar Series

Chiniki Lecture in First Nations History: Stoney-Nakoda and Banff National Park (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 22, 2014 - March 22, 2014

Controlling and Constructing The Stoney-Nakoda: National Parks Exclusion, Banff Indian Days, Resistance and Agency Presentations by Melanie Niemi-Bohun and Jonathan Clapperton Saturday, March 22, 2 to 5 PM Admission by donation Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies 111 Bear Street Banff, Alberta This year's Chiniki Lecture addresses the relationship between Banff National Park and the Stoney-Nakoda. Melanie Niemi-Bohun (University of Alberta, PhD Candidate) will show how Stoney-Nakoda exclusion from the park had much more to do with the interests of game conservation, sport hunting, and assimilation and not to keep a pristine wilderness uninhabited. Jonathan Clapperton (UofA, Postdoctoral Fellow) argues that Banff Indian Days was constructed to temporarily welcome Stoney-Nakoda back to the park in a ritual considered safe by onlookers, while asserting a broader role for themselves within the park and settler-colonial society. The 7th Annual Chiniki Lecture in First Nations History is presented by the University of Calgary's History Graduate Students' Union and the Stoney Tribal Administration.

Department of Economics Seminar Series - Meredith Fowlie (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 21, 2014 - March 21, 2014

"Returns on Investment in Energy Efficiency: Evidence from the Weatherization Assistance Program" Abstract: It is widely held that households and firms routinely overlook seemingly cost effective investments in energy efficiency improvements. As a result of this oversight, it is estimated that 1.1 gigatons of domestic annual greenhouse gas emissions reductions (or approximately 15 percent projected business -as‐ usual emissions in 2030) could be achieved at negative private cost (Granade et al. 2009). This so called “efficiency gap” is attracting the attention of policy makers in pursuit of low‐cost carbon mitigation alternatives. Bottom‐up modeling of energy savings potential is playing an increasingly important role in shaping policy priorities and implementation.
