CALGARY INSTITUTE FOR THE HUMANITIES RESIDENT FELLOWS LECTURE SERIES presents: Professor Antonio Franceschet THE EARLY FATE OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT Can the international community make good on its promises of “never again” for mass atrocities like genocide? Is the rule of law possible at the global level? It is too soon to say whether the world’s first permanent international criminal court, established in 2002, will live up to its promise. Early signs are mixed because of the limited number of prosecutions achieved and the striking resistance of African state leaders to the court’s authority. Drawing on Kantian political theory, this talk focuses on the problems the International Criminal Court faces in light of its limited authority and power in the global system.
