Film & Television Networking Night Join us to tune-in to industry and creative professionals as they dicuss how they got their start in the Film & Television industry. This diverse industry draws individuals from diverse degree and career paths. Students are encouraged to ask questions in this open forum format. The panel will be followed with an opportunity to network with peers and the panelists. Everyone is welcome to attend. Registration is requried. Date: Wednesday March 5, 2014 Time: doors open at 6:00 p.m. event starts at 6:20 p.m. Location: NUTV Studio (MSC 315) RSVP: Here Panelists: Michelle Wong | Business Affairs / Feature Films With more than 25 years in the film and television industry, Michelle brings an unparalleled breadth and depth of production and media arts to the community. Michelle’s formal film training began in 1990 at the National Film Board (NFB) of Canada working with NFB’s Oscar award winning Studio D where she directed and produced her first solo documentary “Return Home.” While continuing to produce documentaries, Michelle worked as a segment producer/director for the Gemini award-winning human affairs series “Skylight” for Vision TV as well as on the health magazine series “Beyond Medicine” for The Women’s Television Network (WTN). Currently Michelle (invaluably!) works as the Business Affairs Manager at Corkscrew where she oversees all contracting and legal aspects of the television specials and series produced by Corkscrew. Michelle was recently promoted to the position of Head of the Feature Films Division. See Michelle’s work here: http://www.corkscrewmedia.net/ Erin Lawrence | Producer, Assignment Editor, CTV Erin is a Producer and Assignment Editor, but often feels like a News Ninja because of the many She may engage in doing background investigation and research one day, researching mystery persons in political campaigns, while other days working out logistics for a crew of three to the get to the US border for a breaking stories. Erin also dispatches news crews, assigns stories to reports, while also evaluating difficult ethics issues, writing news stories, and researching news tips and claims. No day is ever the same. Erin started out as a gofer for Global TV Toronto and worked her way up to the assignment desk by finding tasks that needed doing and proactively doing them. She then moved to a series of on-air jobs including reporter, cameraperson, chopper reporter and anchor before moving to Global National. In Calgary, Erin has worked as everything from a Producer, to 6 pm Newscast Producer, Assignment Editor, and Executive Producer. With CTV, Erin has a great deal of flexibility in her roles due to her varied work experience. Erin attended the University of Western Ontario, receiving a BA in both Spanish and English, as well as a Masters of Arts in Journalism. Spencer Estabrooks | Writer / Director / Editor Spencer Estabrooks is an Albertan writer, director, editor, cyclist, colourist, visual effects artist, archivist, flame operator, beer activist, and gentleman bandit. By day he archives animation for Warner Brothers and Cartoon Network; by night he follows his passion for writing and directing. His films, mostly westerns, horror and horror westerns, have played around the world and on Latin American TV. He one day dreams of completing the ultimate documentary on beer, of which he is continually researching. See Spencer’s work here: http://www.spencerestabrooks.com/ Ritika Anand | Producer / Actor Ritika Anand is a producer by profession and an actor and dancer by passion. From the start of her career as a professional actor in the Indian television industry, Anand has been immersed in the film industry and learned that producing her own content would give her the opportunity to address subjects that were otherwise ignored by mainstream sources. See Ritika’s work here: http://threecoloursandacanvas.com/ Shailender Vyas | Director Shailender Vyas has received formal training in filmmaking from the Asian Academy of Film & TV, in Noida, India. His first public work, a short film called Prashan Chinn, screened at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and at the Dubai International Film Festival. In 2006, Vyas was awarded with the Legislative Assembly Award for his play, Palki, and again in 2010 with the Award of Excellence in recognition of the best film of the year for his 40-minute educational film, Lost. Vyas has an extensive background in dealing with difficult social issues in India and beyond, including Shunya-sa, a film about past stars of the Indian film industry who have since fallen into a life of poverty and are living in slums, and Palki, a film about abandoned brides in India. He is looking to turn both projects into feature-length films in the future.
