Description: Volunteering with ERA is a great way to fulfill your community service goals while gaining excellent computer experience. In addition to learning and assisting with ERA’s processes and electronic recycling initiatives, volunteers will earn a computer once they have completed their volunteer hours. Must be at least 18 years old – check out our opportunities below and get in touch to get started learning about tech and giving back! Our volunteer Computer Technicians will gain hands-on experience with computer refurbishment. You don’t need a background in computers – in fact this would be a great place to start! All you need are a pair of steel toed boots, to be over the age of 16, and a great attitude! Duties may include: Sorting of cables (VGA & DVI, power cords, AC adapters, KVM cables) Sorting of hard disk drives (IDE/SCSI/SATA by rough size) Removal of decals (utilizing heat guns) Monitoring Testing Assist in the unloading of shipments Sorting of laptop bags Sorting of RAM Strip non-operational or incomplete machines for reusable parts (RAM, HDDs, power supplies, CPUs, motherboards etc.) Tidying warehouse workstations Cleaning equipment ERA’s hours of operation are Monday – Friday 9am to 5pm. This position is available any time within these hours, with a minimum 4-hour time commitment. To earn a laptop or desktop computer, 24 hours of volunteer work must be completed. Upon completion of 24 hours, volunteers will receive a certificate of appreciation and a refurbished computer. Description: Next Stop Canada Youth (NSCY) is a program that provides online settlement support, learning opportunities, and mentorship to pre-arrival youth ages 12 to 19 who are destined for Canada. This online program helps overseas youth prepare for immigration by providing them with the information, knowledge, and resources needed to quickly adapt and integrate into Canadian society. Major Duties May Include: Mentoring and chatting with pre-arrival youth to help them with their settlement needs. Sharing immigration experience and providing practical settlement tips to pre-arrival youth. Working with other NSCY mentors to develop NSCY online content (blogs, vlogs). Attending monthly online meetings to further develop skills and provide input for NSCY. Assisting with meetings including facilitating discussions, and helping with virtual activity set-up. Completing mentor training. Time Commitment: Six months commitment which includes monthly online meetings, mentoring one hour per week and may include additional projects which can be completed virtually. Qualifications: Must be between the ages of 14 - 24. Successful applicants to this role will need to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a valid medical or other Human Rights Code-related exemption. Strong organizational skills. Experience and sensitivity dealing with people from different cultural, racial and socio-economic backgrounds. Demonstrate good technological experience and usage of social media tools (i.e. Facebook, Twitter) Responsible, punctual, outgoing and friendly while demonstrating a willingness to learn. Share immigration experiences and provide practical settlement tips to pre-arrival professionals. Time Commitment: Six-month commitment preferred Flexible hours; approximately four hours a month. Qualifications: Minimum age: 23 Life experience as a newcomer is a significant asset Post-secondary education and currently employed in specialized career industry (example: engineering, nursing, teaching, etc.) Volunteers must be certified in their career field if industry standards require it. Description: With our two-day casino event fast approaching, we are in need of volunteers to fill the last few positions. Specifically, we are looking for three volunteers to join us in the Count Room on April 11 (11pm to 3:45am), a volunteer Banker on April 12 (7pm to 3:45am), and two volunteers to work in the Count Room on April 12 (11pm to 3:45am.) All volunteers will receive a complimentary meal and the fellowship of other community minded people. The event will be at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino, Calgary. All funds raised will go towards our wish granting program; giving the gift of hope by granting wishes to children in Alberta diagnosed with a severe chronic or life-threatening medical illness. Description: Volunteer Position: Chairperson, Calgary Contemporary Showcase Founded in 1990 by composer Roberta Stephen, Calgary's Contemporary Showcase has been held every year, reaching thousands of students since its inception. Part of the Alliance for Canadian New Music Projects (ACNMP), Contemporary Showcase is hosted in centres around the nation, drawing on a wide range of sponsors to sponsor awards at the local and national level. “The only festival of its kind in Canada, Contemporary Showcase is devoted entirely to music by Canadian composers. The organization is growing and being recognized as one that is currently building performers, composers and audiences for the future. No other organization continues to promote the performance, composition and study of Canadian Contemporary Music." This is an unpaid volunteer position on the Board of Directors. Role: The Chairperson will direct the planning, organization, and execution of Calgary Contemporary Showcase, an annual student music festival taking place in November. Working with the Board of Directors, the Chairperson will oversee all aspects of the festival, from student registrations and adjudicator hiring to website development and budgeting. The Calgary Contemporary Showcase is keen to increase student numbers and the Chairperson’s leadership will be instrumental in developing new areas of growth. Description: YouQuest is Calgary's first community for people with young-onset dementia (under 65 years) and their families. Our purpose is to promote health and well-being by ensuring access to recreation therapy, counselling and peer support. YouQuest offers a place to belong, a reliable support network to families for full-day respite and caregiver peace of mind to maintain family responsibilities. A registered charity, YouQuest provides access to recreation centre amenities people to follow their own interests. Our Recreation Therapy staff and community volunteers provide functional support as needed to help people achieve well-being, learn new skills, and maintain their independence. What's a Typical Day at YouQuest? Description: YouQuest is Calgary's first community for people with young-onset dementia (under 65 years) and their families. Our purpose is to promote health and well-being by ensuring access to recreation therapy, counselling and peer support. YouQuest offers a place to belong, a reliable support network to families for full-day respite and caregiver peace of mind to maintain family responsibilities. A registered charity, YouQuest provides access to recreation centre amenities people to follow their own interests. Our Recreation Therapy staff and community volunteers provide functional support as needed to help people achieve well-being, learn new skills, and maintain their independence. What's a Typical Day at YouQuest? Welcoming and interacting with participants and staff as part of our team Actively participating in recreation activities along with participants Anticipating participant needs and learning their life stories Joining in team co-planning to support individual and group interests each day Arranging daily snacks and lunch with fellow team members and participants Liaising with care partners and family members Weekly: Tuesdays and Thursdays – 8:30 am - 4:00 pm (volunteer shifts 3+ hours, your choice) Location: Calgary Jewish Community Centre Nutrition: Snacks/Lunch provided; enjoyed with participants & staff Is YouQuest a Fit for You? YouQuest is designed to appeal to younger people with dementia who want to be active and social in a community recreation setting. We’re committed to make Art as well as Artists accessible to everyone through an interactive gallery space located in the vibrant neighborhood of Inglewood. We provide space for Artists to create, showcase and sell their Art while being open to the public. ôˈspiSHəs believes in great beginnings through the healing power of Art, featuring Artists who are on a journey of recovery. The gallery is a central hub available for use by individual Artists, Art therapy, addiction support groups, community engagement groups and we are open to collaboration with many other associations. ôˈspiSHəs art kə’lektiv is currently recruiting dynamic and committed individuals to join our Board of Directors. Board members play an integral role in the operation of our society through strategic leadership and direction in service of the ôˈspiSHəs mission. By nurturing relationships with donors to secure funding, members ensure the financial health of the collective. The board will provide help build the foundational structure and oversight as well as serve as ambassadors to enhance access to art within Calgary.
