Bedford House Volunteer Literacy Tutor

Description: The Program- Bedford House’s primary mandate is to ensure the safety, security, and wellbeing of the community at-large while meeting the social and clinical needs of offenders with issues requiring further programming and/or treatment.  The activities carried out are designed to address the social and clinical needs of residents thereby minimizing the risk present if offenders were simply released into the community at the end of their sentence. Bedford House has a total of 22 beds and houses males aged 18+. The house is staffed 24/7 by at least two staff members. Residents staying at Bedford have been referred to CJHS by Correctional Services Canada for transition back into the community. All referrals are screened for suitability and risk management before being accepted. These men are from all walks of life and have committed a wide variety of offences. Successful candidates demonstrate positive motivation, some insight into their criminogenic factors and a willingness to address and change those factors. The Position - The Volunteer Literacy Tutor will work with adults in improving their basic literacy skills, empowering them to work towards a specific learning goal in order to reach their full potential and participate more fully in society. A collaborative approach will be taken to ensure a mutually agreed upon learning plan can be arranged. Learning sessions will be schedule based on learner and Volunteer Literacy Tutor availability and will take place at Bedford House unless an alternate community location is more feasible. Responsibilities * Provide a nurturing environment to set and pursue learning goals. * Nurture persons served self-esteem and self confidence * Teach skills related to goals and objectives. * In collaboration with the program staff and the persons served, develop individualized programs to meet the persons served needs/goals. * In collaboration with the program staff and the persons served, choose materials appropriate to the persons served reading level and goals. * Participate in assessment of the program and assessment of persons served progress. * Develop awareness of internal/external resources to make appropriate referrals for persons served. * Keep accurate records to be submitted for reporting purposes. Learning Enhancement and Education Program Volunteer

Description: The Program- Learning Enhancement and Education Program is a 3 week employment readiness group program that runs 8 times per year, that combining core workshops to develop the skills for obtaining and maintaining employment, with an individualized industry ticket training is streamed to address personal employment goals. The Position - The LEEP Volunteer will work directly with the people we serve offering guidance, information, and support. You will be supported by a Volunteer Supervisor. Time will be committed to your personal development and will include supervision, support, appraisal and training plans. Responsibilities * To provide support and motivation to the program participants. * To work as a part of a team in conjunction with the program staff to offer one-to-one support in creating resumes, enhancing digital literacy skills, applying for positions, and finding resources. * Co-Facilitating an employment focused workshop. * To assist the program participants in the development of intangible skills such as problem solving and assertiveness as well as nurturing in the development of self-esteem and self-confidence. Pathways to Employment Volunteer

Description: The Program- Our Pathway to Employment program provides individualized employment preparation and skills training and job placement services to males and females aged 18+ who are experiencing difficulties securing employment; some difficulties being a result of their involvement in the criminal justice system. The program is also designed to support Calgary and area employers by providing them access to an untapped labour pool of qualified and motivated individuals who are ready to work. Poverty is both a cause and consequence of crime. Meaningful employment is one of the most successful ways for an individual to move out of poverty and avoid becoming involved in criminal activity. When individuals are given an opportunity to gain meaningful and sustainable employment, it contributes to the overall health and safety of our community. The Position - The Pathway to Employment Program is looking for a caring and committed volunteer to offer guidance, information, and support to individuals who are looking for employment. The volunteer, in conjunction with program staff, will assist individuals in creating resumes, job searching, as well as increasing their digital literacy skills. The position may also require assisting the Employment Facilitator in facilitating employment readiness group sessions.  These sessions will be planned between the volunteer and program staff in advance. Responsibilities * Facilitate and assist group and individual learning sessions * Promote a safe and respectful environment for individuals to thrive * Support clients in writing resumes, cover letters and enhancing their digital literacy & job search skills * Participate and assist in facilitating planned program sessions, with a focus on gaining employment readiness skills for the workplace *  To assist the program participants in the development of intangible skills such as problem solving and assertiveness as well as nurturing in the development of self-esteem and self-confidence. Berkana House Culinary Night Volunteer

Description: The Program- Berkana House is a community residential facility that provides a safe, respectful and empowering environment for women who are transitioning from Federal Institutions (prison) back to the community. The Position - The Culinary Night Volunteer will work collaboratively with the women at Berkana House to develop the skills necessary to plan and prepare healthy, affordable meals while developing strong budgeting and money management skills. You will be supported by a Volunteer Supervisor. Time will be committed to your personal development and will include supervision, support, appraisal and training plans. Responsibilities * To provide support and inspiration to the women. * To work directly with the women to provide the opportunity for them to participate in the planning and preparation of their own meals and experience sharing a mealtime with their housemates. * To plan, organize and offer a variety of healthy meals on a weekly basis. * Build a monthly meal plan with the women and staff team, including planning, budgeting. * Share plan with Team Leader. * To assist in the development of intangible skills such as problem solving and assertiveness as well as helping in the development of self-esteem and self-confidence. Berkana House Social Club Volunteer

The Position - The women at Berkana House gather every Wednesday for an evening of prosocial activities. The Volunteer will work directly with them to give them the opportunity to meet together, discuss issues they are facing in their reintegration and learn how to take part in drug and alcohol free activities.  You will be supported by a Volunteer Supervisor. Time will be committed to your personal development and will include supervision, support, appraisal and training plans. Responsibilities * To provide support and inspiration to the women. * To work directly with the women to provide the opportunity for them to meet together and discuss issues facing their reintegration. * To plan, organize and offer a variety of prosocial activities on a weekly basis. * Build a monthly schedule of activities, including budgeting and gaining approval from the Team Leader. * Work with the staff team and the community to provide support for the activities. * To assist in the development of intangible skills such as problem solving and assertiveness as well as helping in the development of self-esteem and self-confidence. (Training provided) • Reach out to students, teachers and community members to expand the reach of your RESULTS Canada group. • Develop an outreach strategy to engage more people in taking advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaigns. Logistics Ambassador will: • Take advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaign. (Training provided) • Coordinate bookings of rooms, meetings, tables and banner space. • Manage database of contacts. Internal Relations Ambassador will: • Take advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaign. (Training provided) • Liaise with club administration, other Club’s executives and, with the leader/co- leader, with RESULTS National Office and Community. • Liaise and partner with other clubs in order to get more people involved in our campaigns against extreme poverty. Promotions Ambassador will: • Take advocacy actions on a RESULTS campaign. (Training provided) • Manage the chapter’s social media presence. • With the support of the National Office, create promotional materials to use on campus. • Liaise with student and community media outlets, such as radio and newspapers. As a RESULTS Canada advocate, you will have the chance to apply to participate in the group leader retreat and the RESULTS National conference happening. These two events are happening in Ottawa in 2018 and will offer valuable leadership training, networking and advocacy experiences. We will be providing a certain amount of bursaries to attend these events. In addition, there are always opportunities to apply for funding for events such as the annual International Conference in Washington were volunteers use their advocacy skills in a meeting with the World Bank, as an example.
