Philosophy Speakers: Jeremy Fantl (UCalgary), "The Ethics of Public Discourse" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 18, 2015 - September 18, 2015

About the Talk I argue, contra some Millian considerations, that there is no necessary obligation – individual or group – to engage with salient counterarguments when publicly endorsing positions or enacting policies. In many such cases you can know that the salient counterargument is unsound. If you know a salient counterargument is unsound, then you can’t be expected to engage with it open-mindedly – with a willingness to adjust your commitments and reconsider your reasons if you can’t expose where the argument goes wrong. And you can’t be expected to engage with it closed-mindedly, because to do so is either impermissibly disrespectful or insincere. It follows that there is no individual obligation in such situations to engage with salient counter-arguments, and at most a limited group obligation. About the Speaker Jeremy Fantl is Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Philosophy at the University of Calgary. His research interests are in the areas of epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind. He is the co-author (with Matthew McGrath) of Knowledge in an Uncertain World (Oxford University Press) and a co-editor (with Ernest Sosa, Jaigwon Kim and Matthew McGrath) of Epistemology: An Anthology (Blackwell). He recently returned to UCalgary following a visiting associate professorship at Brandeis University. Jeremy Fantl's website

The Ninth Clan—Exploring Apachean Origins in the Promontory Caves, Utah (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 16, 2015 - September 16, 2015

Twentieth century anthropologist Julian Steward concluded in the 1930s that the Promontory Caves on Great Salt Lake, Utah, contained highly suggestive evidence that Navajo or Apache ancestors had lingered briefly in the eastern Great Basin on their way between Canada and the American Southwest. Compelling though Steward’s arguments were, comparatively few archaeologists took them seriously. Today we can use the astonishing array of perishable materials (including hundreds of moccasins, as well as mittens, other clothing, basketry, bows, arrows, and bison robes) from Steward’s as well as our own more recent excavations in the Promontory Caves to illustrate how Steward was indeed correct, and how Dene ancestors originally from the Subarctic had begun their transformation toward historic Navajo and Apache cultural identities. Philosophy Speakers: Susan Haack (Miami), "Credulity and Circumspection: Epistemological Character and the Ethics of Belief" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 11, 2015 - September 11, 2015

About the Talk The purpose of this paper is, first, to get clear about what credulity is, and why it’s an epistemological vice (§1); then, to explore the various forms this vice takes, including its perhaps surprising manifestation as a form of scientism (§2); next, to suggest why credulity poses dangers not only to individuals, but also to society at large—including, specifically, the legal system and the academy (§3); and, finally, to sketch some ways to curb credulity and foster circumspection in ourselves and others, especially our students (§4). In the process it will take up issues about the nature of belief, the determinants of the quality of evidence, synechism, science, scientism, testimony, expertise, and evidence-sharing as well as questions about the ethics of belief and the demands of education. About the Speaker Susan Haack is Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, Cooper Senior Scholar in Arts and Sciences, Professor of Philosophy, and Professor of Law at the University of Miami. Her work ranges from philosophy of logic and language, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of science, pragmatism--both philosophical and legal--and the law of evidence, especially scientific evidence, to social philosophy, feminism, and philosophy of literature. Her books include Philosophy of Logic; Deviant Logic, Fuzzy Logic: Beyond the Formalism; Manifesto of a Passionate Moderate; Defending Science--Within Reason; Pragmatism, Old and New: Putting Philosophy to Work. Her most recent book, Evidence Matters: Science, Proof, and Truth in the Law, appeared in 2014 from Cambridge University Press. More PHIL Events Susan Haack's webpage at University of Miami

SHAD Open House (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: July 30, 2015 - July 30, 2015

As the SHAD Experience comes to a close, the students and staff will be hosting an Open House Day on the Thursday, July 30, 2015. Parents, guardians, relatives and friends are all invited to attend the Open Day activities. The open house will include displays about our activities including workshops, lectures, guest speakers, and recreation. We also share our prototypes and business models of our design projects. The design challenge for this year, shared by all 12 host SHAD campuses across Canada, is: "Why don’t you go play outside?" Between the increasing pull of screen time, highly structured activities, and concern for perceived risks outside the home, we have become an increasingly interior, sedentary society. What might we create to encourage Canadians to play outside and reconnect with the physical world around them to improve well-being? SHADs are expected to plan, organize, construct and present the exhibits to our visitors.
