Ross Ellis Memorial Lecture in Military and Strategic StudiesA Perfectly Engineered Killing Ground: The Calgary Highlanders and the Walcheren Causeway Battle (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 29, 2015 - October 29, 2015

On October 31, 1944, the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade was ordered to force a crossing over the Walcheren Causeway and establish a foothold on the eastern flank of Walcheren Island. Only 40 yards wide and stretching 1,200 yards with sodden reed-grown mudflats on either side the causeway was a deadly killing ground. An attempted advance up the gunbarrel straight causeway by the Black Watch was shredded. On the night of October 31, the Calgary Highlanders stepped out into the open in a valiant effort that won a shallow bridgehead on the far end that the Germans fiercely counterattacked throughout the ensuing day. Author Mark Zuehlke’s 2015 Ross Ellis Memorial Lecture, A Perfectly Engineered Killing Ground: The Calgary Highlanders and the Walcheren Causeway Battle, pays tribute to the regiment’s gallantry and also the key role that Major Ross Ellis played in this battle.
Location:
Military Museums of Calgary - 4520 Crowchild Trail SW
Speaker:
Mark Zuehlke is an award-winning author generally considered to be Canada’s foremost popular military historian. His Canadian Battle Series is the most exhaustive recounting of the battles and campaigns fought by any nation during World War II to have been written by a single author. In recognition of his contribution to popularizing Canadian history, Mark was awarded the 2014 Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media: The Pierre Berton Award. In 2007, his For Honour’s Sake: The War of 1812 and the Brokering of an Uneasy Peace won the Canadian Author’s Association Lela Common Award for Canadian History. The Canadian Battle Series Holding Juno captured the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize in 2006. Mark is also an award winning mystery writer, whose popular Elias McCann series has garnered much critical praise in Canada and abroad. Set in storm-swept west Vancouver Island village of Tofino, the series follows the reluctant community coroner Elias McCann. Hands Like Clouds, the debut in this series, won the Crime Writer’s of Canada’s Arthur Ellis Award for the 2000 Best First Novel and the third installment, Sweep Lotus, was nominated for the 2004 Arthur Ellis Best Novel.

Synopsis from Layalina Productions: Yemeniettes follows the trials and tribulations of three Yemeni teenage girls and their start-up business in a country scarred by widespread youth unemployment and underemployment, a broken educational system and a threatening Al-Qaeda presence. Despite growing up in a conservative society where traditional gender roles are encouraged and perpetuated, Wafaa, Maha and Reem are determined to forge a better future for themselves. The documentary shows a seldom seen side of Yemen, which most associate with terrorism and drone attacks. The teenage cast hopes to build a factory to manufacture solar panels in a country that experiences frequent power outages. This enterprising spirit lands them in a national entrepreneurship competition, and later helps them advance to the regional finals in Doha, Qatar where they compete against students from twelve other Arab countries in hopes of winning the title of Best Company of the Year.

A Workshop on: Corpus Linguistics (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 26, 2015 - October 26, 2015

A Workshop on: Corpus Linguistics An overview of methods, research findings and applications Date & Time: October 26, 2015 | 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm Location: EDT 450 Speakers: Randi Reppen (Professor of Applied Linguistics and TESL at Northern Arizona University) and Doug Biber (Regents' Professor of Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University). This session will combine lectures and workshops to provide an introduction to corpus analysis for linguistic research and language teaching. We will begin by introducing corpus linguistics as a research approach, providing case studies that illustrate the unexpected research findings that have emerged from corpus analyses, and discussing how those unexpected findings might directly influence practices in language instruction. We will then discuss case studies that have investigated particular linguistic research questions, showing again how corpus research often leads to unanticipated findings (related, for example, to the kinds of grammatical complexity found in conversation versus academic writing, or the kinds of phraseological chunks found in the professional writing of L1-English versus L2-English academics). Finally, we will provide the opportunity for hands-on practice working with corpora and corpus-analysis tools available for research and classroom applications. The workshop will provide ample opportunity for audience participation and questions. Please submit your registration HERE. For more information, please visit the LRC website.

Recent Discoveries in the Sierra de Atapuerca (Spain) (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 21, 2015 - October 21, 2015

Speaker: Dr. Rolf Quam, Binghamton University The Pleistocene cave sites in the Sierra de Atapuerca in northern Spain are well-known for a number of important paleoanthropological discoveries. In particular, the site of the Sima de los Huesos (the Pit of the Bones) has yielded the largest collection of human fossils from the Middle Pleistocene time period. These fossils are generally considered to represent ancestors of the later Neandertals. The site has been under excavation for the last 30 years and has provided an abundance of data on the course of human evolution in Europe, including the earliest evidence for human funerary behavior in the archaeological record. An overview of the discoveries and the significance of the site will be presented, along with some discussion of the latest findings. Protecting Instream Flow in Alberta’s Rivers – Navigating Churning Policy Waters (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 17, 2015 - October 17, 2015

The Faculty of Law and the Canadian Institute of Resources Law invite you to attend a free public lecture on Protecting Instream Flow in Alberta’s Rivers – Navigating Churning Policy Waters. It is a simple truth that healthy aquatic ecosystems need sufficient water to meet instream flow needs. Yet the water in some Alberta’s rivers is fully or over-allocated to human uses which can impact and impair aquatic ecosystems. This lecture will describe why we should be concerned about instream flow needs, especially in southern Alberta, explain what tools the Alberta Water Act provides to restore and protect instream flows, and set out the curbed use by the Government. The lecture will recount to date the ongoing and litigious saga of the non-profit Water Conservation Trust of Canada and its aim of utilizing the transfer and licensing provisions of the Water Act and the water market made possible by the Act to protect instream flows. This event is sponsored by the Alberta Law Foundation.
Location:
MFH 3360
Speaker:
Arlene Kwasniak, CIRL Senior Research Fellow and Professor Emerita of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Calgary, will be the lecturer.

Engaging in Courageous Conversations Workshop (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 15, 2015 - October 15, 2015

As student leaders we need to build our ability and willingness to engage in challenging, sensitive - in a word, courageous - conversations(1). Courageous conversations are about leading for improvement, leading for improvement, leading for change, and in doing so there can be some degree of discomfort, disagreement or resistance along the way - whether on the level of the individual, or the organization(1). Change often challenges our deeply-held beliefs but it does not have to lead to conflict or stifle the process. Whether you are hosting, facilitating, or interested in engaging in courageous conversations, this workshop will provide some practical skills, tips and resources to have peaceful, challenging conversations. We will talk about establishing safer space guidelines, facilitation skills, conflict resolution strategies, and other challenges that you may face when engaging in courageous conversations. To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children, to earn the approbation of honest critics; to appreciate beauty; to give of one’s self, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived–that is to have succeeded.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
