Home Brewed What?! Science and Perception of the Opium Poppy (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 28, 2015 - November 28, 2015

Home Brewed What?! Join the Department of Biological Sciences on Saturday, November 28th. Spark your curiosity as we explore the world of plants and the many ways they impact our lives. In our hands-on Discovery Sessions hosted by students and researchers, you can investigate everything from how plants make medicines and chemicals like rubber to how they can detoxify tailings in the oil sands. Now is your chance to ask our researchers and plant biologists’ questions about plants and their pharmaceutical potential. You can even help our biologists extract natural products from plants! At pop-up laboratories throughout the EEEL lobby, children and adults can take part in hands-on activities, such as extracting DNA from strawberries, creating plant-based crafts, peering through microscopes while observing what happens in our laboratories. At 3 PM, Dr. Peter Facchini will present the public lecture: Home Brewed What?! Science and Perception of the Opium Poppy. (Space for the lecture is limited, registration is required) Abstract: Lecture by Dr. Peter Facchini: Opium poppy is one of the world’s most important medicinal plants and remains our only commercial source for narcotic painkillers, such as morphine, codeine and oxycodone. Morphine obtained from the illegal cultivation of opium poppy is also easily converted to the harmful recreational drug heroin. Understanding the unique genetic and biochemical machinery that makes opium poppy an efficient morphine factory has been the focus of Professor Peter Facchini’s research at the University of Calgary for over 20 years. Work in Dr. Facchini’s laboratory has uncovered many of the key genes that allow the plant to produce several important medicines. Recently, these genes have been transferred to baker’s yeast, which could one day be used in place of the plant to produce opiate drugs. However, concerns have been raised about the potential misuse of this technology. Join Dr. Facchini in a lecture on the science and public perception of opium poppy, from the isolation to morphine more than 200 years ago to the brave new world of synthetic biology. Date: November 28th, 2015 Time: Discovery Sessions take place between 2pm and 5pm in the EEEL lobby with the Public Lecture occurring from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm in EEEL 161 Location: Energy, Environment and Experiential Learning (EEEL) Building on the University of Calgary Main Campus This event is free and fun for the whole family! Please register by November 23rd at https://netcommunity.ucalgary.ca/HomeBrewedWhat For parking information, please visit https://www.ucalgary.ca/map/ We look forward to exploring with you! This talk focuses on Schoenberg’s distinctive representation of the Holocaust and the various meanings that accrued to the piece as it circulated through Europe during the early Cold War. http://www.ucpress.edu/blog/16602/the-provocative-history-of-arnold-scho... https://llc.ucalgary.ca/event/2015-11-27/llc-speaker-series-presents

Getting a Seat at the Table: The Gendered Rules and Norms of Cabinet Appointments Around the World (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 24, 2015 - November 24, 2015

The Calgary Institute for the Humanities presents Susan Franceschet, “Getting a Seat at the Table: The Gendered Rules and Norms of Cabinet Appointments Around the World” Cabinets are at the pinnacle of policy making and political processes. As such, cabinet appointments are valuable political prizes. Yet at the beginning of 2015, women held just 17% of ministerial posts around the world. What explains men’s over-representation among cabinet ministers? This presentation explores how the process of selecting cabinet ministers is gendered in ways that create different opportunities for men and women to be recruited into cabinet. The presentation draws on research into the written and unwritten rules of cabinet recruitment in both presidential and parliamentary democracies, including Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. This free lecture is open to the public. Please register here by Nov 22, 2015

Location:

Biological Sciences 587

Speaker:

Susan Franceschet is a Professor in the Department of Political Science. She is the author of Women and Politics in Chile and co-editor of The Impact of Gender Quotas and Comparative Public Policy in Latin America. She has researched and published extensively on women’s political representation, gender and public policy, and gender quotas for elected office in Latin America. Her current research project is on women’s recruitment to cabinets in comparative perspective and is funded by an Insight Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

We Got the Astronomy Blues Open House (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 21, 2015 - November 21, 2015

The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is partnering with the Cross Conversation Area and the Priddis/Millarville Community Association for a fun night of light. Like the animals that hang out in the Cross Conversion Area, our astronomers love dark skies and we are working hard to protect the Wilderness the night sky. Join us for games, give-aways and talks which highlight the importance of light pollution abatement to our community. Using humour and popular culture, Jason Nishiyama and Roland Dechesne hope to introduce you to the colourful science of astronomical spectroscopy, by focusing on all the different things blue light can tell us about the Solar System and the Universe. UFO… or UAV? Lucy Poley is an ecologist and PhD student in the Department of Geography at the University of Calgary, and she has spent the past summer flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) over the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory property. When equipped with high-resolution digital cameras, UAVs are a great new way for researchers to quickly and efficiently map study areas, providing valuable data on species and their habitat that simply couldn’t be collected at ground level. The prairie ecosystem on the RAO property has provided the perfect place for Lucy to practice her flight skills, develop her research methods, and occasionally retrieve the UAV from a tree. All open house events feature access to an array of telescopes operated by University of Calgary astronomers and members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Calgary Centre. You have the opportunity to look through the telescopes and astronomers will be on hand to answer questions. The observatory is a dark sky area so please bring flashlight, preferable dim or red. We are located on a windy hill, so please dress for the weather. The cost is $20 per car OR $10 per person All proceeds go towards the RAO educational programming

Requiem for an Idea: Harper and North American Integration (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 20, 2015 - November 20, 2015

The Political Science Speaker Series presents: Dr. Greg Anderson, "Requiem for an Idea: Harper and North American Integration". The Conservative government’s management of foreign policy over the past decade has generated considerable controversy. Canada’s participation in Afghanistan, the country’s domestic terrorism legislation, aggressive pursuit of trade liberalization, a commodities-driven prosperity, all coupled with tough-talking rhetoric have given some the impression that Canada is again a serious force on the international stage. Yet, close to home, where it arguably matters more, the Harper Government has contributed to a re-bilateralization of North American relations detrimental to Canada’s long-term interests. This paper details the slide into bilateralism, makes a case for why it’s detrimental, and puts forward an argument for both why the next government ought to re-engage trilateralism as well as some suggestions for how to go about it. This free lecture is open to the public. All Welcome!

Location:

Social Science 729

Speaker:

Dr. Greg Anderson is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta (CANADA). He holds a B.A. in history from Brigham Young University, an M.A., also in history, from the University of Alberta, and a Ph.D. from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University (Johns Hopkins/SAIS) in Washington, D.C.Dr. Anderson’s research and teaching interests are situated within the discipline of international political economy, particularly the political economy of North American integration. He has authored numerous pieces focused on Canada-U.S. relations, the politics of international trade and investment policy, U.S. foreign economic policy, and the impact of the global economy on forms of governance. Dr. Anderson’s recent writing has included a focus on the contemporary debate over foreign direct investment rules and the experience with investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) within the NAFTA area. Finally, Dr. Anderson has recently started work on the impact asymmetrical power relations have had on the evolution of North America’s political economy. From 2000-2002, Dr. Anderson worked in the Office of the United States Trade Representative as a policy analyst in the NAFTA office.

The CMF Speaker Series Presents - Life Writing: A Challenge to Communication Narratives (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 20, 2015 - November 20, 2015

This panel will present three scholars' perspectives on the role of "life writing" (auto/biography) in communications studies. The investigation of life writing complicates and challenges the master-narratives of many communication theories and research methodologies. Considering "who" is writing about "whom," as well as how auto/biography is crafted, challenges us to think differently about communication. Life writing narrates important social, ideological, and cultural issues from an individual's point of view over time. Connections: The CMF Speaker Series is a monthly colloquium hosted by the Department of Communication, Media and Film, presenting new research and special interest topics in the Social Sciences and Humanities to the University of Calgary community. The events are free and followed by a reception.

Philosophy Speakers: Cheryl Misak (Toronto), "The Subterranean Influence of Pragmatism on the Vienna Circle" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 20, 2015 - November 20, 2015

About the Talk An under-appreciated fact in the history of analytic philosophy is that American pragmatism had an early and strong influence on the Vienna Circle. That path – from Charles Peirce to Frank Ramsey to Ludwig Wittgenstein to Moritz Schlick – is traced in this paper, and along the way some standard understandings of Ramsey and Wittgenstein, especially, are radically altered. About the Speaker Cheryl Misak is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Her research interests are in pragmatism, history of analytic philosophy, philosophy of medicine, ethics, and political philosophy. She is the author of The American Pragmatists (Oxford), Truth, Politics, Morality (Routledge), Truth and the End of Inquiry(Oxford), and Verificationism: Its History and Prospects (Routledge).

Most Cruell and Bloody Murder: Crime Reporting in Early-Stuart England (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 19, 2015 - November 19, 2015

This article examines two crime chapbooks written in 1606 that describe the murder of a young boy, Anthony James, the mutilation of his sister, Elizabeth, and the conviction and execution of their alleged assailants, Agnes and George Dell. The presence of two chapbooks describing the same crime was unusual in early modern England. The two versions contain a great deal of contradictory information, were seemingly written for very different audiences, served a variety of functions for contemporary readers, and force the modern reader to question if, in fact, justice was done in this case. Comparing and contrasting the two texts allows us to consider various aspects of crime reporting and the effectiveness and purposes of the criminal justice system in early-Stuart England. Ken MacMillan is Professor of History at the University of Calgary. He is the recipient of two University of Calgary Teaching Awards (2014 & 2015). Melissa Glass is an Honours student in the Department of History. This project emerged from their collaboration on Stories of True Crime in Tudor and Stuart England (Routledge, 2015), and was supported by a 2015 Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) award.

Sigma Xi Seminar: Life and death in big data: what you don’t know may save your life – or kill you (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 19, 2015 - November 19, 2015

Modern scientific methods, such as metabolomics, can generate terabytes of data that must be extensively processed to identify the small subset of biologically-meaningful signals. These complex analyses are playing an increasingly important role in both routine science and evidence-based medicine. Although these state-of-the-art techniques will unquestionably contribute to saving lives, they present serious technical challenges. I will illustrate both the enormous potential and hidden dangers lurking in metabolomics, and other modern scientific methods that generate big data, and illustrate the surprising impact data handling can have on human health. This seminar is sponsored by the Univ of Calgary local chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. Thursday noon 12-12:50 pm in BI211.

Location:
