Life and Death in the Napoleonic Era Royal Navy stationed at English Harbour, Antigua, West Indies (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 18, 2015 - November 18, 2015

Speaker : Dr. Tamara Varney, Lakehead University Nearly two decades of investigation of two burying grounds that were associated with the Royal Naval Dockyard at English Harbour, Antigua, West Indies has revealed some interesting insight into what life was like for Naval personnel posted to the West Indies. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Graveyard of Englishman’, the West Indies posting included many challenges such as tropical disease and lead poisoning. Both regular and enslaved personnel are represented in one of the cemeteries that was associated with a former Naval Hospital, while the other site appears to have been a less formal expedient burial ground allowing for a nice representation of lower ranking personnel. Free event, sponsored by the Archaeological Society of Alberta - Calgary Centre. See arkycalgary.com for more info

Annual Quantum Public Lecture: Teleportation, Time Travel and Escape from Black Holes (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 18, 2015 - November 18, 2015

The Institute for Quantum Science and Technology presents its Annual Public Lecture at 7pm on Wednesday 18 November 2015. This year's speaker is Seth Lloyd, who is the Nam P. Suh Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Center for Extreme Quantum Information Theory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr Lloyd's research focus is on the interplay of quantum information with complex systems. In addition to his seminal work on quantum simulation, he wrote a popular book Programming the Universe in which he argues that the universe itself is a quantum computer running a cosmic program. The topic of the talk focuses on time travel, which is common science fiction fare, but less well-known is that time travel has a scientific basis allowed by general relativity and various quantum models. Time travel is intrinsically paradoxical (killing one's grandparent so you thus never exist), but I show how time travel paradoxes can be resolved by quantum teleportation. As an extra benefit, teleportation provides a strategy for escaping black holes. Dr Lloyd will also describe the results of an experiment in which a photon is sent a few billionths of a second back in time with instructions to kill its former self. The event is free but an advance ticket is required to join. Registration details are at http://iqst.ca/outreach/publiclecture.php The Lecture is followed by a free reception for the speaker and the audience.

Recent Research into the Causes of Bear Attacks in North America (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 18, 2015 - November 18, 2015

Since 1967, Dr. Stephen Herrero has done research on the behavior of bears and has applied what he and colleagues have found to provide people with knowledge about the details of aggressive behavior in bears. For instance, lots of people like to walk their dogs in bear country, but over half of 93 black bear attacks on people, between 2010 and 2013, involved dogs. Fido is not always your best friend. He has also done major research on the use of bear spray to deter bear attacks. It works. For most people, and in most situations, it works better than firearms. He could go on, and will in his talk. This event is organized by the University of Calgary Emeritus Association and is sponsored by the Vice-President (University Relations). It is open to the community at no charge.

Postcards in the Archives -exhibit (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 13, 2015 - December 21, 2015

The University of Calgary Archives and Special Collections is pleased to announce an exhibition of the modern-media communications explosion of a hundred years ago: Picture Postcards. Postcards once excited and captured the imagination of millions of people in the early 20th century and fired up a new media revolution, the results of which we're still seeing today. Postcards were the emails and iPhones of the 1909, complete with their own memes. Though it may seem outdated and obsolete to us now, the postcard collecting craze was the product of an era undergoing more disruptive technological and social changes than we are today. With an estimated one billion cards made each year in North America alone during the boom, many postcards remain for collectors and enthusiasts to cherish and interpret today. The exhibition features a rare opportunity to view the Elsie Taylor Album of British Actor Postcards. The album of 156 cards belonged to the English schoolgril Elsie Taylor of Hampstead, England. The postcards were collected from 1906-19100 and feature portraits of 42 actresses and 24 actors. The album is owned by Special Collections at the University of Calgary and was acquired through this university's Drama department. The exhibit closes December 21, 2015 so don't miss the opportunity to see this unique display on the 5th floor of the Taylor Family Digital Library.

Animal Law and Environmental Law: Parallels and Synergies – Implications for Alberta (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 7, 2015 - November 7, 2015

The Faculty of Law and the Canadian Institute of Resources Law invite you to attend a free public lecture on Animal Law and Environmental Law: Parallels and Synergies - Implications for Alberta. This event is sponsored by the Alberta Law Foundation. With its intricate layers of international, federal, and state protections, environmental law is more established than animal law. In his new book, What Can Animal Law Learn From Environmental Law?, Professor Randall S. Abate of Florida A&M University College of Law has assembled an experienced team of more than 20 academics, advocates, and legal professionals from the environmental and animal law fields to examine the experiences of these two fields. Drawing on lessons from history, politics, and law, the 17-chapter book examines how environmental law’s successes and shortcomings can inform animal law, and how the two fields can work together to secure mutual gains in the future. This presentation will address some of the key topics of the book’s coverage, including standing, food law, agricultural practices and climate change, and the need for animal law to establish itself more firmly in international law. Due North: Pre-Conference Workshop, Beading Workshop (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 5, 2015 - November 5, 2015

Due North: Next Generation Arctic Research and Leadership Conference is hosting several pre-conference workshops on Wednesday, November 4th and Thursday, November 5th. Most workshops will take place in the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL) room 403/405. Click here for more information on all the workshops For a small fee ($25/workshop), we invite all interested parties to take part in these workshops. Beading Workshop Mrs. Annie Smith is a 90 year-old Elder of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation. She has been sewing and selling her sewing since she was a girl. She sold purses and dolls to tourists coming off the train in Carcross in the 1920’s, before the highway came through. When tourists began coming up the Alaska Highway in their motorhomes, collectors from France sought her out to buy her work. Her work is commissioned by the Yukon Premier and by her First Nation. She has also taught many people how to sew over the years. She believes that “There is no such thing as can’t do!” Come with a willingness to try and you’ll be amazed at what Mrs. Smith will be able to guide you to do. Ms. Dianne Smith, Mrs. Annie Smith’s daughter, is a younger Elder of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation. A home tanned cushion cover which she beaded toured in Europe as part of an awardwinning interior design for the Canadian House and Home magazine in the winter of 2015. Dianne works with students at Jackson Lake in a land-based healing program run by Kwanlin Dun First Nation, and when they want to learn sewing as part of their healing process, she brings her Mom out to teach them. On one hand, this will be a hand-on three hour sewing class, where students will undertake a simple project under the instruction of Mrs. Annie Smith and Ms. Dianne Smith. Students who are interested in working with First Nations Elders will have an opportunity to learn from two who have a lot of experience teaching. They can ask questions as they work. It is considered good practice when learning from a First Nations Elder to make sure you connect with their families, and students will be able to see how Dianne and her mother interact as they teach together. In mainstream academic culture there is the idea that knowledge exists in an abstract plane; this is a chance to learn from knowledge that exists in the relationship between Dianne and her mother. If you are interested in joining this workshop, please register and pay by clicking here or visiting our website: https://arctic.ucalgary.ca/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=24 Any questions, please email acuns15@ucalgary.ca or phone 403-220-7515

Diversity in Supply Chain Career Fair http://www.vanhorne.info/event/2015-11-05/diversity-supply-chain-career-fair Date & Time: November 5, 2015 | 10:00 am - 5:30 pm Location: University of Calgary Downtown Campus, 906 8th Avenue S.W., Calgary, Alberta, T2P 1H9 Diversity in Supply Chain project is a one-day career fair including keynote speakers, panel discussions and a workshop series. The goal of the event is to connect the Supply Chain industry to underemployed or unemployed people that fit within the six underrepresented groups (Women, Aboriginal Persons, Persons with Disabilities, Immigrants, Youth and Mature workers). Increasing diversity in Canada’s workforce leads to a competitive advantage in the marketplace, and higher corporate performance and profitability. Diversity improves short term business performance by reducing costs, resolving labour shortages, accessing new markets and improving performance in existing markets. Companies with a diverse workforce have been shown to be more adaptable, have greater innovation and increased customer relations. Building on the work completed by the Van Horne Institute in Women in Supply Chain, Youth in Supply Chain and Building Inclusive Workplaces projects, Diversity in Supply Chain aims to enable companies to put previous research into practice. The Van Horne Institute is inviting interested companies to participate in the supply chain career fair in Calgary. Staff will also have the opportunity to attend the keynote speeches and engage in networking sessions. Verbatim presents .. An Evening with KLINGON (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 5, 2015 - November 5, 2015

Thursday, November 5th, resident Klingon Expert, Joey Windsor, will be in attendance to share his knowledge on one of Star Trek's many legacies. He has been much in demand, and Verbatim is super pleased that he will do this presentation before he becomes so very busy and famous: "Klingon is an invented ConLang (constructed language) which has been created to be as unnatural as possible in a human context, but both learnable and pronouncable by the actors of Star Trek. As such, it follows the general principles of linguistic universals. In this talk we will explore what makes this barely human language exciting from unusual phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, and semantics. We will look into the sociolingusitics of the 6500+ person speech community, and into the background of how and why this language was created. Despite the linguistic content of this talk, it has been arranged so that very little prior linguistic knowledge is required to understand the discussion." You asked for it! Hope to see you there!

Due North: Pre-Conference Workshop, Research Ethics and Requirements for research involving human participants in the North (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 4, 2015 - November 4, 2015

Due North: Next Generation Arctic Research and Leadership Conference is hosting several pre-conference workshops on Wednesday, November 4th and Thursday, November 5th. Most workshops will take place in the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL) room 403/405. Click here for more information on all the workshops For a small fee ($25/workshop), we invite all interested parties to take part in these workshops. Research Ethics and Requirements for research involving human participants in the North Research ethics boards are required by academic institutions to ensure that research ethics policies and procedures are established and adhered to by faculty and students. This is to make sure that researcher’s and institutions are doing high quality research with high quality standards. We must minimize all potential risks and maximize the benefits for all those involved. In this workshop we will go through some of the standard practices and requirements for ethics review of research. Some of the areas to consider: 1. What is research ethics and why is it a requirement for academic institutions? Why do the Northern Colleges have research ethics review processes in place? 2. What is a Research Ethics Board/Committee? How do they operate? 3. Research ethics application forms (standard requirements and information). What needs to be considered when completing the forms (rationale and methods, selection/recruitment, risks and benefits, privacy, confidentiality and data security, informed consent and the right to withdraw) How do I complete these? – what do I need to consider in my research planning process. Community consultation – what is this and how do I do this in the best way possible. What are other things that might be considered in an REB review? 4. TCPS2 Tutorial – National guidelines and requirements 5. Research in the Northern regions (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik and Labrador) – considerations and requirements a. Community consultation b. Research license 6. What are some of the best practices for doing research in the North. 7. Supports and information available for researchers. (Handout of some key information sources and contact people). Philosophy Speakers: Shelley Alexander (Geography, UCalgary), "Through Coyote Eyes" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 30, 2015 - October 30, 2015

About the Talk To 'see' through coyote eyes is to be awakened. Revered, reviled, or loved, one coyote is killed every minute in North America, making this the most persecuted carnivore species on the continent and offering a unique lens into the sometimes perverse world of animal conservation science and practice. I weave examples of coyote (and wolf) research and management into a description of types and character of ethical dilemmas that arise, particularly in academia and publishing. I explore how the dominant scientific approach (reductionist-positivist methods, limited metrics of suffering, and denial of situational factors) permits gross animal welfare violations in the name of science. In its worst expression, its apologists argue that statements of ethical position and philosophy are simply 'emotional' and irrational—they have no place in objective science. Borrowing from the work of E.O. Wilson, I suggest that a re-'consilience' of wildlife management sciences, critical animal studies, and philosophy may reduce the 'enabling' of animal welfare violations. I ask for discussion on the experiences and possibilities of re-embedding critical thinking and philosophy of science into all wildlife education (and vice versa), animal handling protocols, and professional activities. About the Speaker Shelley Alexander is Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Calgary, where she leads the Canid Conservation Science Lab. Her research focuses on carnivore conservation and spatial ecology, conservation GIS, and habitat fragmentation and road ecology. In 2005, Shelley launched The Calgary Coyote Project, studying regional urban and rural coyote ecology and human-coyote conflicts across Canada. The Foothills Coyote Initiative, funded since 2014 by SSHRC, now encompasses Calgary and the foothills parkland natural region surrounding the city, and seeks to understand human-coyote relationships. She has been a principal investigator and/or collaborator on several other projects including the Raincoast Wolf Project, the Swift Fox Critical Habit Project, the Calakmul Road Effects Project (Yucatan), and the Painted Dog Trust (Zimbabwe).

This event is part of the Women’s Resource Centre and Consent Awareness and Sexual Education Club’s Sexual Assault Prevention Project – Creating a Culture of Consent. This is a Quality Money Project, brought to you by the Students’ Union. For more information visit the Women's Resource Centre website or Facebook event page.

Ross Ellis Memorial Lecture in Military and Strategic StudiesA Perfectly Engineered Killing Ground: The Calgary Highlanders and the Walcheren Causeway Battle (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 29, 2015 - October 29, 2015

On October 31, 1944, the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade was ordered to force a crossing over the Walcheren Causeway and establish a foothold on the eastern flank of Walcheren Island. Only 40 yards wide and stretching 1,200 yards with sodden reed-grown mudflats on either side the causeway was a deadly killing ground. An attempted advance up the gunbarrel straight causeway by the Black Watch was shredded. On the night of October 31, the Calgary Highlanders stepped out into the open in a valiant effort that won a shallow bridgehead on the far end that the Germans fiercely counterattacked throughout the ensuing day. Author Mark Zuehlke’s 2015 Ross Ellis Memorial Lecture, A Perfectly Engineered Killing Ground: The Calgary Highlanders and the Walcheren Causeway Battle, pays tribute to the regiment’s gallantry and also the key role that Major Ross Ellis played in this battle.
Location:
Military Museums of Calgary - 4520 Crowchild Trail SW
Speaker:
Mark Zuehlke is an award-winning author generally considered to be Canada’s foremost popular military historian. His Canadian Battle Series is the most exhaustive recounting of the battles and campaigns fought by any nation during World War II to have been written by a single author. In recognition of his contribution to popularizing Canadian history, Mark was awarded the 2014 Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media: The Pierre Berton Award. In 2007, his For Honour’s Sake: The War of 1812 and the Brokering of an Uneasy Peace won the Canadian Author’s Association Lela Common Award for Canadian History. The Canadian Battle Series Holding Juno captured the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize in 2006. Mark is also an award winning mystery writer, whose popular Elias McCann series has garnered much critical praise in Canada and abroad. Set in storm-swept west Vancouver Island village of Tofino, the series follows the reluctant community coroner Elias McCann. Hands Like Clouds, the debut in this series, won the Crime Writer’s of Canada’s Arthur Ellis Award for the 2000 Best First Novel and the third installment, Sweep Lotus, was nominated for the 2004 Arthur Ellis Best Novel.
