Category: Other EventDates: December 2, 2016 - December 2, 2016
This talk will focus on installation and performative practices that use personal and familial narratives as a way to understand, produce, and unravel conceptions of place. Through his artistic practice, Tomas Jonsson is involved in a long-term engagement with the local landscape and history of Calgary to interrogate larger conditions of urban development, migration, colonial histories, and logics in which his presence is implicated. Using simple transactions as forms for social encounter and engagement, he is interested in how points of exchange can be imbued with other forms of value. About Tomas Jonsson Tomas Jonsson is an artist, curator, and writer interested in issues of social agency in processes of urban growth and transformation. Jonsson has produced several projects in Calgary addressing the city’s urban transformation, including sites such as The East Village and Hillhurst Sunnyside. Why Don’t Chinese Speakers Finish Their Turns? (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: December 2, 2016 - December 2, 2016
The School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures presents Why Don’t Chinese Speakers Finish Their Turns? Multimodal Construction of Syntactically Incomplete Turns in Mandarin Conversation, with Dr. Xiaoting Li, professor of Chinese linguistics at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Alberta. In everyday conversation, people normally take turns to speak and recipients usually initiate their talk upon the possible completion of the speaker’s turn (Sacks et al., 1974). However, speakers sometimes do not complete the verbal delivery of their turns. That is, a speaker’s turn is and remains syntactically incomplete. Adopting the methodology of conversation analysis, interactional linguistics and multimodal analysis, this paper examines eight hours of natural Mandarin conversation and investigates how participants deploy multimodal resources such as lexico-syntax, prosody, and bodily-visual conduct to construct and interpret the syntactically incomplete turns (SIT), and the interactional grounds for the syntactically incomplete turns in Mandarin conversation. The study shows that syntactically, many incomplete turns in the data are in the Topic-Comment structure (a typological syntactic feature of Chinese) with the Comment verbally unproduced. Prosodically, the syllables immediately prior to the termination of the syntactically incomplete utterance are usually produced with noticeably lower volume and pitch movement. Body movements such as head shakes, gestures and gaze also provide resources indicating the end of speaker’s verbal delivery and sometimes even the type of elements that are left unsaid. In the data, SITs may be used to deal with delicate or problematic matters in Mandarin interaction.
Location:
Craigie Hall D 420
Speaker:
Dr. Xiaoting Li is assistant professor of Chinese linguistics at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Alberta. Her research interest is language in social interaction and multimodal interaction. She uses the methodology of conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, and multimodal analysis to study language and body movement in Chinese talk-in-interaction. Her book Multimodality, Interaction, and Turn-taking in Mandarin Conversation (John Benjamins, 2014) is the first book-length work on turn-taking and multimodality in Chinese interaction. Her work on Mandarin conversation has been published widely in international journals such as Journal of Pragmatics and Language Sciences.

Unnatural Language and Natural Thinking: Shakespeare and His Contemporaries (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: December 2, 2016 - December 2, 2016
Critics of computational text analysis tend to perceive its focus on language patterns as a flattening of qualitative texts into quantifiable patterns. They're right. But a text's linguistic operating system deserves close scrutiny when it reveals features of the text that a human reader can't perceive, or when it flags evidence beyond our capacity to gather. The Augmented Criticism Lab has developed algorithms to detect features of repetition and variation in the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries (starting with drama, namely the Folger's Digital Anthology). We've begun with features like rhetorical figures that repeat lemmas (heed, heedful, heeding) or morphemes (heeding, wringing, vexing). We use natural-language processing to gather evidence of these unnatural formulations, to ask whether they signal natural habits of thought. The interpretive payoff is our ability to make more definitive arguments not just about these figures, but also about underlying cognitive habits. This presentation describes our process and our corpus, and presents a range of our results with this initial corpus before we expand to the billion words in the EEBO-TCP corpus (1473-1700). Join artist Leslie Hossack for a discussion of her two exhibitions REGISTERED: The Japanese Canadian Experience During World War II and H-HOUR: Normandy 1944, at The Founders Gallery at The Military Museums. REGISTERED: The Japanese Canadian Experience During World War II (Nov. 11, 2016 – March 5, 2017) is an exhibition of photographs and archival material exploring the experience of Japanese Canadians during World War II when they were registered, rounded up and removed. REGISTERED includes newspaper clippings from the 1940s, authentic registration cards, and interpretive photographs of buildings where the story unfolded. H-HOUR: Normandy 1944 (Dec. 2, 2016 – March 5, 2017) is the latest series of work by photographer Leslie Hossack that explores the structural remains of the Atlantic Wall – giant bunkers and fortifications, largely hidden by the blowing sands of the D-Day beaches. It also commemorates individual grave markers of the soldiers killed in 1944 and buried in Canadian, British, American and German cemeteries scattered throughout Normandy, as well as many original documents related to their tragic deaths. Category: Other EventDates: December 1, 2016 - December 1, 2016
In conjunction with Spark Disability Arts Festival Nov. 28-Dec. 2, Nickle Galleries hosts Cripping the Museum: A Panel Discussion on Disability, Art, Museums and Galleries in Calgary. As Jeanna Reid recently noted in Canadian Art, “We live in a time of unparalleled interest in … disability arts.” But what are "disability arts?" And who are artists with disabilities? Apart from the five-day spotlight the Spark Disability Arts Festival shines on local talent, how well represented are artists with disabilities in Calgary? What are the issues local artists face navigating the art world? Similarly, what are the issues persons with disabilities face visiting Calgary’s museums and galleries? As Reid suggests, cripping the arts involves unsettling the larger art world, exposing complacency and, hopefully, planting seeds for the future. Panellists: Dick Averns, Visual Artist and Instructor, Department of Art, University of Calgary Angela Broad, Visual Artist and PhD Candidate, Computer Mediated Design, University of Calgary Geraldine Chimirri-Russell, Curator, Nickle Galleries, University of Calgary (retired) Stephanie Hanson, Wellness Services Program Facilitator, Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research Sandra Morton Weizman, Museum Consultant and Principal, Clinic for Heilkunst Medicine Moderator: Michele Hardy, Curator, Nickle Galleries, University of Calgary Everyone is welcome. Category: Other EventDates: November 28, 2016 - November 28, 2016
Attend a lecture by Mike Casey, Indiana University Bloomington. This presentation explores the time-based media preservation problem, detailing how the forces of degradation along with rapidly advancing obsolescence issues taken together result in a short time window in which to digitally preserve audio, video and film collections. Using a fairytale as a framework, it introduces a character named Degralescence that embodies the major forces that threaten to undermine media preservation efforts. It also proposes a timeframe within which action must be taken to avoid losing the opportunity to affordably preserve large holdings of media recordings. Using the Indiana University collections and the work of the Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative as examples, it explores strategies for addressing this impending and inconvenient crisis. Mike Casey is the director of technical operations for Indiana University’s Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative which has digitally preserved more than 150,000 audio and video recordings as of this writing. He is the co-author of Sound Directions: Best Practices for Audio Preservation, a contributing author to the second edition of the best practices publication Guidelines on the Production and Preservation of Digital Audio Objects (known as IASA-TC 04), a contributing author to IASA-TC 05 Handling and Storage of Audio and Video Carriers, the creator of FACET: The Field Audio Collection Evaluation Tool and the co-creator of the media prioritization software applications MediaSCORE and MediaRIVERS. He also authored the Indiana University Media Preservation Survey report and is principal author for the follow-up publication Meeting the Challenge of Media Preservation: Strategies and Solutions. His article entitled Why Media Preservation Can’t Wait: The Gathering Storm that explores media degradation and obsolescence was published in the IASA Journal in January 2015. Category: Other EventDates: November 28, 2016 - December 7, 2016
The exhibition Malleable Monuments is on display until December 7, 2016 in EVDS Small Gallery. Malleable Monuments presents a grouping of transcalar design experiments that test how to empower the role of architecture within the transforming, evolving, fluctuating, and indeterminate conditions of the city, its public sphere, and its ecological context. Four geologic models are situated within a tensile portico structure, which both references the monumental archetype, yet destabilizes its reading through the lightness and malleability of its materiality. A series of taxonomy drawings classify the design experiments into four categories—Frameworks, Living Archives, Articulated Surfaces, and Rewiring States. These projects share a goal of reconciling and choreographing how the human and environmental subject and their individual, transforming, ephemeral, and often contradictory characteristics continuously recompose a permanent work. The work is exhibited as one of six selected winners of the 2016 Architectural League Prize. About the Architectural League Prize The Architectural League Prize is an annual competition, series of lectures, and exhibition organized by The Architectural League and its Young Architects and Designers Committee. Participants in the program are chosen through a portfolio competition that is juried by distinguished architects, artists and critics, and the Young Architects and Designers Committee. The committee, a group selected each year from past winners of the League Prize, is responsible for developing the program’s theme and selecting competition jurors. Open to designers ten years or less out of school, the competition draws entrants from around North America. The lecture series and exhibition by winners of the competition provide a lively public forum for the discussion of their work and ideas. This year’s theme for the portfolio competition, (im)permanence, asks how time affects architecture’s assertion of style, methods of assembly, and relationship to program, thus altering our expectations of permanent structures in an impermanent environment.

Category: Other EventDates: November 24, 2016 - November 24, 2016
Join the Institute for Quantum Science and Technology in welcoming Paul Corkum, PhD, from the University of Ottawa and the National Research Council of Canada, to deliver a quantum public lecture titled A Molecule Takes a Selfie While Creating the World’s Shortest Light Pulses. Register for the lecture here. If you are unable to attend, you can watch the lecture live. About the speaker: Dr. Paul Corkum is best known for introducing many of the concepts in strong field atomic and molecular science. In the early 1990s, a number of new, seemingly unconnected, phenomena were discovered in strong field atomic physics. Two of the most important of these are high harmonic generation and correlated double ionization (a phenomenon in which an atom absorbs hundreds of photons and emits two electrons). Dr. Corkum developed a comprehensive theory of all of these phenomena. This work is the foundation on which all subsequent research in this area has been built. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1996) and the Royal Society of London (2005) and an elected member of the US Academy of Science (2009). Among his most prestigious prizes are the Canadian Association of Physicists' Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Physics (1996), the Royal Society of Canada's Tory Award (2003), the Optical Societies Charles H. Townes Award (2005) and the IEEE's Quantum Electronics Award (2005). In 2013, Dr. Corkum received two very prestigious international awards, the Harvey Prize from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology and the King Faisal International Prize for Science. The Optical Society of America (OSA) awarded him the Frederic Ives Medal in 2014 and in 2015, Dr. Corkum was named Thomson Reuters Citation Laureate, reserved for researchers who are "of Nobel class" and likely to earn the Nobel someday.

(University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: November 24, 2016 - November 24, 2016
Southern Albertans’ relationship with water has changed strikingly in recent years, enduring a withering drought and a hundred-year flood. Our cities are often situated on river banks, like Calgary at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers, making them vulnerable to floods yet creating the illusion of plentiful water. This leads us to overlook the fact that the prairies are prone to drought and watersheds strain to meet the growing demands of our population. These contrasting vulnerabilities are just some of the complex challenges we face in our region. Join our panel of experts for a roundtable discussion that explores the future of water over the next 20 years in Calgary and beyond. Our speakers will discuss a variety of issues related to water in southern Alberta watersheds, including: - Scarcity - Water rights and government allocation - Flood mitigation - Water treatment and pollution of municipal waterA - Wetland conservation and wildlife habitats If you drink water, this is an event for you! Category: Other EventDates: November 24, 2016 - November 24, 2016
The field of music history has traditionally shied away from many of the techniques standard in the social and physical sciences, among them, the use of data-driven and statistically grounded techniques to handle large amounts of quantitative evidence. Yet, when faced with the over 1,400 cantatas written by Christoph Graupner in the early 18th century, I had to adapt several techniques common outside the field for use within it. In this talk, I will provide a brief overview of the Christoph Graupner, the Lutheran liturgical cantata, and their respective places in early 18th-century music history. I will then describe and demonstrate several of the techniques I used and developed in order to arrive at a deeper understanding the music and the manuscript sources that preserve it. Bio: Evan Cortens holds a PhD in Musicology from Cornell University, with a focus on 18th-century German music. His dissertation, entitled "The Sacred Cantatas of Christoph Graupner: Music at the Intersection of Opera and Theology,” examines the cultural and historical context of the sacred works by this contemporary of J. S. Bach. His articles have appeared in Bach: The Journal of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and Haydn: The Journal of the Haydn Society of North America; his edition of Johann Samuel Schroeter’s Six Keyboard Concertos, op. 3 was published by A-R Editions in 2013. Evan is currently an institutional analyst at Mount Royal University in Calgary. Sponsored by Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, and Chacmool Archaeological Association.

Category: Other EventDates: November 24, 2016 - November 24, 2016
We will be hosting a two-hour event focusing on deconstructing, reacting to, and existing alongside concepts of health, medical power, and identity. The first hour will consist of a presentation by Dr. Bonnie Lashewicz on medical power, disability and identity, with a Q&A session; the second half will be a guided small group peer discussion, focusing on challenging our own concepts of our bodies, and exploring diverse methods of expressing ourselves. As we live in an increasingly biomedical society, describing one’s self often relies on the more "legitimate" discourse of biomedicine, resulting in the privileging of "biomedical" descriptors of one’s self in comparison to poetic, literary, spiritual, existential, poetical, moral, or social; ultimately, this confines, constricts, and limits the expression of diverse bodies, minds, and souls, at the expense of well-being.
