Category: Other EventDates: November 21, 2016 - November 21, 2016
The election of Donald J. Trump on Nov. 8 has shifted the American political landscape in a way that has serious implications for feminist activists. This informal talk will map how feminists have used digital media to advance gender equality over the past several years and will consider how feminist digital culture may provide a foundation to challenge Trump policies in the coming years. Jessalyn Keller is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication, Media and Film at the University of Calgary. Her research interests are broadly situated within digital media, feminist theories and ethnographic methods. Specifically she is interested in girls’ digital cultures, contemporary feminist activism and solidarities, the performance of feminine selves online, and public girlhoods. Her first book, Girls’ Feminist Blogging in a Postfeminist Age (Routledge, 2015) uses ethnographic methods to explore girls’ blogging as a significant practice of contemporary feminist activism.

Category: Other EventDates: November 18, 2016 - November 18, 2016
Dr. Quan Long of the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and of Medical Genetics at the University of Calgary, is giving the Fall 2016 SAGE/Biostatistics Seminar entitled Modeling genetic background by linear mixed models: applications on genome and gene expression data on Friday, November 18, 2016. Summary of the talk: One of the major promises of the field of genomics is the establishment of a complete genotype phenotype map; a tool with the capacity to precisely identify the genetic mechanisms responsible for a given set of symptoms presenting in a patient. Such a tool would revolutionize our ability to deliver healthcare that is customized to the individual patient (precision medicine), by enabling accurate disease detection and early intervention with the most appropriate and effective treatment for that individual. Empowered by the next-generation high-throughput sequencing technology, researchers are generating genomics data containing millions of genetic polymorphisms. In contrast, the best-funded medical genomics studies can include cohorts of only hundreds or thousands of patients. This suggests that established techniques for big-data mining may suffer from “overfitting” and more biological insights must be leveraged. In this talk, Dr. Quan Long will present how to utilize genetic background using linear mixed models to strike a good balance between overfitting and underfitting. Their application on genomes and gene expression data will be demonstrated.

Category: Other EventDates: November 18, 2016 - November 18, 2016
One popular construal of environmental sustainability is as a matter of inter-generational justice. But this view requires that the generations have an actual claim to the Earth, what I call a planetary entitlement. The traditional way of grounding the planetary entitlement was by appeal to divine bequest, and contemporary theorists have not offered a suitable replacement. I offer here a sketch of a new way of grounding the planetary entitlement, by appeal to our mutual co-construction with the earth as environment, along the lines suggested by Richard Lewontin. About the speaker Allen Habib is assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Calgary. His research interests focus on ethics, philosophy of law, environmental ethics, and social and political philosophy.

Abraham Lincoln and American Jewry (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: November 18, 2016 - November 18, 2016
The departments of History, and of Classics and Religion present guest Dr. Gary Zola in a lecture based on his 2014 volume, We Called Him Rabbi Abraham: Lincoln and American Jewry (Carbondale, Illinois: Southern Illinois University Press, 2014), a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. Very few people are aware of the remarkable historical relationship between Abraham Lincoln and the American Jewish community. In this lecture, Dr. Zola will provide the audience with an informative and entertaining explanation as to why many of Lincoln’s personal and professional characteristics caused American Jews to embrace the 16th president as a man who possessed a Jewish soul. Gary Zola is executive director, The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and Edward M. Ackerman Family Distinguished Professor and the American Jewish Experience and Reform Jewish History, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Zola received both his rabbinic ordination (1982) and his PhD in American Jewish History (1991) from HUC-JIR. He has authored and edited numerous publications, among them A Place of Our Own: The Rise of Reform Jewish Camping in America; The Dynamics of American Jewish History: Jacob Rader Marcus’s Essays on American Jewry; Women Rabbis: Exploration and Celebration and We Called Him Rabbi Abraham: Lincoln and American Jewry, a Documentary History.

Category: Other EventDates: November 16, 2016 - November 16, 2016
A prevailing view in anthropological and archaeological theory has been that nomadic societies are incapable of forming complex political polities that endure in the longue durée. Here, Dr. Erik Johannesson challenges this view by presenting the results of over a decade of archaeological research on the Xiongnu Empire in Mongolia (209 BC-200 AD). According to Chinese texts, the Xiongnu Empire was formed when the charismatic leader Motun unified the nomadic steppe tribes of Mongolia and Siberia into a powerful confederacy that quickly emerged as a regional enemy of the Han Dynasty. The formation of this polity is identified archaeologically with sweeping changes in material culture, technology, and funerary customs. Drawing on fieldwork from Baga Gazaryn Chuluu in the north Gobi and Shombuuzin Belchir in the Altai foothills, this presentation will explore the archaeology of the Xiongnu Empire and how political centralization manifests in mortuary practice. Adopting a diachronic perspective, Xiongnu mortuary monuments will be discussed vis-à-vis preceding funerary traditions to illustrate that Xiongnu tombs represent a conspicuous inversion of previous customs. A scalar landscape approach will then be used to demonstrate how mortuary ideology was manipulated by the Xiongnu elite to incorporate local lineages of leadership into a broader Xiongnu political economy. Finally, the reopening of tombs in antiquity and osteological evidence of violent trauma will be discussed to illustrate that mortuary contexts formed important loci of Xiongnu state-craft, and arenas in which political ideologies were both imposed and contested. For this reason, monitoring and management of muskox populations is not only crucial from the conservation perspective but is also a part of a broader process to ensure food safety and security in some of the most remote regions of the world. Category: Other EventDates: November 7, 2016 - November 7, 2016
To coincide with the opening of the 22nd Conference of the Party (COP22) gathering of world Heads of State and Governments, The Urban Research Network presents: Science in the Pub II - Urban Resilience. The majority of the global population is urban, and extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and intensity. Cities founded under different climatic conditions are ill-equipped to cope with this shift. And so, on top of efforts at all levels of government to decrease consumption of finite energy resources, urban areas must also deal with the current reality of extreme weather. Cities must adapt because the human, environmental, and financial cost of doing nothing is increasing. The discussion will start with a short presentation by Maha Al-Zu'bi on issues surrounding urban resilience in Jordan. This will broaden the scope of the debate beyond the Anglo-European perspective, and provide a background to discuss issues of urban resilience in different contexts, and better understand specificities and commonalities for resilient cities over the world. Our other panelists: Christine Arthurs, director, Resilience and Infrastructure, City of Calgary Dr. Sasha Tsenkova, professor, Faculty of Environmental Design Dr. Caroline Hachem-Vermette, assistant professor, Faculty of Environmental Design Moderator: Natalie Robertson, MEDes candidate and Urban Resilience enthusiast To register: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/turn-science-in-the-pub-ii-urban-resilience-tickets-28474614338?utm_term=eventname_text
