Frequency and Morphoyntactic Variation: Evidence from U.S. and Peninsular Spanish (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 14, 2014 - November 14, 2014

Part of the LRC "Language Acquisition and Learning" Series With the rise of exemplar theory (Bybee 2010), the role of lexical frequency in language variation and change has been a focus of considerable study, particularly in phonology (e.g. Bybee 2002; Jurafsky et al. 2001; Walker 2012). Results, however, have been mixed, with some studies showing strong frequency effects and others showing no such effects. Recently Erker and Guy (2012) extended the analysis of frequency effects to morphosyntactic variation. Based on data from 12 Dominican and Mexican speakers from Otheguy and Zentella’s (2012) New York City Spanish corpus, they examined the role of frequency in variation between null and overt subject personal pronouns (SPP), one of the most widely studied variables in Spanish sociolinguistics (see Flores-Ferrán 2007 for a review). Erker and Guy’s results suggest that frequency either activates or amplifies the effects of other constraints such as co-reference with the subject of the preceding tensed verb and person and number. This paper reports on two studies that explore frequency effects on SPP variation. Multivariate analysis of approximately 11,000 tokens drawn from Mexican American Spanish in California and Texas and peninsular Spanish in Madrid shows that frequency has only a minimal effect on SPP variation. Rather, in both dialects, the traditional constraints of co-reference, person and number, and semantic class are the main influences on variation. The results presented in this study, as well as results presented in Bayley et al. (2013) and Martínez-Sanz and van Herk (2012), suggest that the role of frequency, at least in this area of the grammar, has been considerably exaggerated and that well-established linguistic factors provide a better explanation for SPP variation than frequency.

Philosophy Speakers: Bryson Brown "Reconsidering Induction" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 14, 2014 - November 14, 2014

About the Talk Hume's argument against induction is one of the key texts of modern philosophy. Following the triumph of Newton's physics, it cast considerable doubt on the status of Newton's achievement and shaped the subsequent philosophical debate over the status and methods of science. Hume's argument has been the target of many responses (for a recent, vigorously wrongheaded critique see Stove, 1986). But many in the empiricist tradition of philosophy of science have openly despaired of an answer to Hume's challenge being arrived at. More recently, John Norton has proposed a 'material' account of induction which, he argues, is not subject to Hume's objections. I will approach the issue by raising some questions about the assumptions of Hume's argument: does induction as practiced really proceed as Hume presents it? Are other types of knowledge claim really induction-free? Further questions emerge from this inquiry: what is the real scope of the problem of induction, that is, what beliefs or knowledge claims do Humean worries about induction undermine? What does induction come to, in practice, and how do 'inductive' conclusions really relate to non-inductive commitments? I close with some discussion of how answers to these questions relate to Norton's material account. About the Speaker Bryson Brown is on the faculty of the Philosophy Department at the University of Lethbridge. He specializes in philosophical logic, preservationism, paraconsistency, philosophy of science, and evolution, and also has current current interests in ambiguity logics, laws of nature, and free will. His most recent book (co-edited with P. K. Schotch and R. E. Jennings), On Preserving: Essays on Preservationism and Paraconsistent Logic, is forthcoming from the University of Toronto Press. Online Jihadists and Spies: How twitter and Facebook changes the modern battlefield (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 6, 2014 - November 6, 2014

The way people organize and protest has been forever changed by the power of social media. A timely example of this is the political unrest in Ukraine. Protestors came together through social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook, leading to a series of events that first erupted in Maidan Square, Kiev. The movement took on a Twitter hashtag of its own and inspired the exhibition #EuromaidanYYC, which is currently on display in the University of Calgary’s Founders’ Gallery at The Military Museums. In conjunction with the exhibition #EuromaidanYYC, the role of social media in political conflict will be examined during a free, public lecture by writer and journalist Ben Makuch at noon at the University of Calgary on November 6. Makuch will speak again that evening at 7:00 p.m. at The Military Museums.

Theatre and Print in the Age of Garrick (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 5, 2014 - November 5, 2014

Eighteenth-Century Matters presents Dr. Heather Ladd (University of Lethbridge) for a hands-on exploration of the Garrick Club Collection at the TFDL. Abstract: This talk explores the influence of the most famous actor of his time, David Garrick, (1717-1779) on the world of eighteenth-century letters and beyond. As a playwright, a theatre manager, and a central figure in his social milieu, Garrick helped shape the culture of his age. The talk will address aspects of his literary and dramatic career including his rivalry with fellow playwright and actor Samuel Foote, his relationship to eighteenth-century print culture, and his impact on the literary taste of the period’s cultural consumers. Many of the works examined in the talk are part of the University of Calgary’s Garrick Club Collection, comprised of 2000 plays penned in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and they show how Garrick’s influence extended beyond his last stage performance, in 1776. The Garrick Club, founded in London in 1831, consisted of members involved in the theatrical world, and in many ways continued Garrick’s work as a stage reformer. A play central to this talk is J. R. Planché’s Garrick Fever (1839), a farce set in the eighteenth century, which dramatizes the wild popularity of Garrick’s Hamlet. To register for this event, contact mckennej@ucalgary.ca. The US Midterm Election: Heading Into Obama’s Last Two Years (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 5, 2014 - November 5, 2014

On November 4, Americans head back to the polls to decide which party will control the Senate and the House of Representatives during Barack Obama’s last two years as President. It could be a big day for the Republican Party, as most forecasters are predicting they will win a majority of seats in the Senate. If that happens, Obama could face even more serious challenges getting his agenda passed before he leaves office in 2017. What do the election results mean for Canada-US energy cooperation? Border and security management? US foreign policy? And the fate of the US economy? How will the results shape the 2016 presidential race? On November 5, join The School of Public Policy and the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute for a panel discussion on the outcome and its implications for Canada. Former Democratic Governor Howard Dean and veteran Republican strategist Ron Kaufman will join the discussion along with the SPP’s Ian Brodie and CDFAI’s Colin Robertson. The discussion will be moderated by CBC Eyeopener host David Grey. ISPIA Distinguished Lecture Series: Side Channels in Multi-Tenant Environments (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 3, 2014 - November 3, 2014

With the growth of cloud computing, the security provided by public clouds to their tenants is increasingly being scrutinized, in part because these clouds arrange for mutually distrustful tenants to simultaneously execute tasks on the same hardware. In this talk we explore a long-suspected but, to date, largely hypothetical attack vector in public clouds, namely "side-channel attacks" in which one tenant might learn sensitive information about another tenant simply by running on the same hardware with it, but without violating the logical access control enforced by the cloud's isolation software (hypervisor or operating system). Specifically, we demonstrate the practicality of damaging cross-tenant side-channel attacks on modern hypervisors and operating systems, including some that we have demonstrated on commercial public clouds. We will then describe various approaches we have developed to defend against side-channel attacks in cloud environments, both inexpensive defenses against our specific attacks and more holistic but expensive protections. Prof. Reiter's research interests include all areas of computer and communications security and distributed computing. His present research focuses primarily on security of cloud computing and networks, as well as usable security. Prof. Reiter was named an ACM Fellow in 2008 and an IEEE Fellow in 2014. Stories From the Edge: Aboriginal Insights in an Uncertain World (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 3, 2014 - November 3, 2014

The Chair in Christian Thought presents The Swanson Lectures in Christian Spirituality Stories From the Edge: Aboriginal Insights in an Uncertain World Against the backdrop of residential schools and government assimilationist policies, my Indigenous mother taught me to find hope. In facing overwhelming situations she was able to do more than just survive. The ability to move from survival to flourishing is grounded in aboriginal people embracing a communal identity. Given that western Christian theology has been complicit in attempting to annihilate aboriginal identity, it is important to claim the language of Christian theology in the cause of healing the damage done in the mission of the gospel in North America. Now It's Gotten Interesting: Diversity as Threat and as Opportunity (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 30, 2014 - October 30, 2014

The Faith & Spirituality Centre presents: Dr. John Stackhouse "Now It's Gotten Interesting: Diversity as Threat and as Opportunity." Multiculturalism has been a part of Canadian identity for two generations, but only in the last decade has it become a significant challenge. Now diverse populations in Canada have achieved critical mass—in numbers, in dollars, in votes, in voices. Meanwhile, Americans continue to struggle with the legacy of slavery while Latino and Asian immigration alters cities and even whole states. What now is “reasonable accommodation” of diversity? How can a coherent society be formed out of such different groups and individuals? This talk—drawing on cross-border and cross-regional perspectives—explodes the comfortable, constraining myths of both “assimilation” and “affirmation” to set out a realistic sketch of what can and cannot be done. North American society can flourish as never before with all this diversity, but only if certain fundamental lessons are learned—and learned quickly.

Putting God in His Place: Does Theology Belong at the University? (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 30, 2014 - October 30, 2014

Peter Craigie Memorial Lecture Putting God in His Place: Does Theology Belong at the University? Dr. John G. Stackhouse, Jr. Whether theology (that is, formal “talk about God”) ought to be a part of the Great Conversation of the modern university has been answered very differently even in very similar communities. Oxford and Cambridge employ theologians while in Australia theology is utterly unknown in any reputable university. Harvard, Yale, and Chicago maintain divinity schools while Princeton, Stanford, and the best public institutions in America keep theology resolutely on the margins—in student clubs and chaplaincies. In Canada, public universities vary not only from region to region and province to province but even from school to school. Why is there so much ambiguity and ambivalence over such an ancient discipline—one of the founding disciplines of the university itself? What good can theology do, if any, to advance the mission of the contemporary public university? What good, if any, can the public university do to advance the mission of contemporary theology? And what harms can come to the university or to theology if a proper relationship is not articulated and maintained? https://rels.ucalgary.ca/Peter_Craigie_Memorial_Lecture_2014
