Philosophy Speakers: Ned Markosian (W. Wash), "Things or Stuff?" (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: October 24, 2014 - October 24, 2014
This talk is about the choice between a thing ontology and a stuff ontology (as the correct ontology of the physical world, that is). I first spell out a particular way of understanding the question of whether the physical world is fundamentally a world of things or fundamentally a world of stuff. I then offer several reasons for positing irreducible stuff, followed by several reasons for positing irreducible things. Thus I defend a mixed ontology of both things and stuff. I also consider some serious doubts that I have about my proposal. Ned Markosian is professor of philosophy at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. He specializes in metaphysics with main areas of research currently in the metaphysics of physical objects (especiallly the mereology of those objects and the relation between physical objects and the matter that constitutes them), and some questions about time. He is the author (with John Carroll) of An Introduction to Metaphysics (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and has numerous published articles.

Visiting Artist: Roselina Hung (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: October 17, 2014 - October 17, 2014
Roselina Hung will talk about her work as part of the Visiting Artist and Scholar Series of the Department of Art. All are welcome. Bio The continued interest of my work has been the use of narrative in contemporary culture, as a means of understanding ourselves and the events in our lives. Borrowing from personal experiences and collective histories, my drawings and paintings are collage-like in theme and execution. I use different materials and techniques to both clashing and complimentary effects, mixing flat patterns with figures and landscapes. The collage element of my work is conceptually similar to my collection of disparate visual references from multiple sources, from art history to pop culture.

Ancestry and Artistry: Maya Textiles of Guatemala — Exhibiton (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: October 17, 2014 - December 13, 2014
Ancestry and Artistry: Maya Textiles from Guatemala celebrates the vibrant living culture of the Maya through an examination of traje, the elaborate traditional dress which is the primary visual expression of Maya identity in Guatemala today. Traje plays a crucial role in Maya tradition and community life, as cloth holds great importance for the Maya. Traje serves as a preservation tool for Maya ideas, practices and world views, but also reflects the ways in which Maya culture has adapted and responded to contemporary realities. The use of new materials and technologies in garment production, the political upheavals caused by the civil war, the introduction of Maya weaving within the global crafts market, and religious transformation within Maya communities reveal both the opportunities and challenges for cultural survival for the Maya today. The exhibition also features the work of contemporary artists Andrea Aragón and Verónica Riedel of Guatemala and US photo-journalist Jean-Marie Simon, three women who are intimately connected to the country and have been close observers of the evolution of Maya cultural identity and present-day politics in Guatemala. Their work provides insight into the everyday life of the Maya as well as profiling how the Maya have come to terms with recent challenges to their communities. Curated by Roxane Shaughnessy and organized by the Textile Museum of Canada with the support of the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage and Joan VanDuzer. Exhibition continues to December 13, 2014.

Category: Other EventDates: October 17, 2014 - October 17, 2014
This essay is about the difficulties of doing criminal justice in the context of severe social injustice. Having been marginalized as citizens of the larger community, those who are victims of severe social injustice are understandably alienated from the dominant political institutions, and, not unreasonably, disrespect their authority, including that of the criminal law. The failure of equal treatment and protection and the absence of anything like fair and decent life prospects for the members of the marginalized populations erode the basis for its allegiance to demands of the political community. The criminal law thus occupies a problematic normative position with respect to lawbreakers in this population. On the one hand, the criminal law has a right and an obligation to protect citizens against crimes; on the other hand, because of its mistreatment of marginalized citizens, the dominant society's authority to call these defendants to account is at least compromised. The main task of this paper is to characterize the predicament in a perspicuous way.

Gary Watson is Provost Professor of Philosophy and Law at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law and holds a joint appointment at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. Watson's writings have shaped understanding of the nature of moral agency, moral responsibility, freedom of action, and the freedom of the will. His interest in concepts of legal responsibility targets the relations between moral and criminal responsibilities and the criminal law's conceptions of moral agency. Long regarded as a leading expert in moral theory, moral psychology, philosophy of law, and moral and criminal responsibility, Watson was named a fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences in April 2014 and will be inducted at a ceremony October 11, just prior to his visit to Calgary. His book Agency and Responsibility (Oxford UP 2004) is considered a classic.

Sigma Xi Seminar: How the Lung Clears Inhaled Silica Dust (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: October 16, 2014 - October 16, 2014
Although exposure to silica dust can be followed by silicosis and lung cancer, natural lifelong exposure to silica dust can also be benign. The difference in outcome remains unexplained but may be related to whether the lung is able to clear the particles or not, a process not well understood for the smallest of the dust particles (nanoparticles). Using electron microscopy and super-resolution light microscopy, we have observed that the epithelial cells that line the lung vigorously bind and then transport agglomerates of nanoparticles across the cell layer (transcytosis). The particles are then transported away in the blood stream. We now want to apply this knowledge to see what makes this healthy function go off the rails for the particles that cause cancer or silicosis. This Seminar is sponsored by Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society - Members and Non-members welcome.

Professor Matthias Amrein from the Departments of Cell Biology and Anatomy/ Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, University of Calgary

Design Matters with Mary McLeod (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: October 15, 2014 - October 15, 2014
EVDS welcomes Professor Mary McLeod of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP) to campus for the next Design Matters lecture on Wednesday, October 15. Dr. McLeod’s lecture “Le Corbusier, the New Woman, Domestic Reform” will explore the relationship between Le Corbusier’s architecture and the emergence of the New Woman in France after World War I, examining how changing gender identities and social conditions (such as women working and the so-called servant crisis) affected Le Corbusier’s vision of domestic living in the 1920s. She will address the influence of Charlotte Perriand on the atelier’s designs, as well as the role of an emerging domestic reform movement in Germany and France (especially the writings of Paulette Bernège) on Le Corbusier’s view of modern living. One theme that will be considered is the new importance that the kitchen gained in his work in the late 1920s. The Salon d’Automne apartment of 1929 will be discussed as a pivotal project. As part of her lecture, she will show a short film of 1931, Pierre Chenal’s L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, in which Le Corbusier presents three of his villas from the late 1920s. Join us at the Downtown Campus (906 8 Avenue SW) at 6:00pm. Admission is free for students, $10 for non-students. Public welcome. Date: Wednesday, October 15 Time: 6:00-7:30pm Location: University of Calgary Downtown Campus - 906 8 Avenue SW

Managing Chaos at the Okotoks Erratic (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: October 15, 2014 - October 15, 2014
The Okotoks Big Rock is a designated provincial historic site that is owned and operated by the Alberta government as a tourist destination. In the past several decades the town of Okotoks has exploded in population, leading to greater public presence at the Big Rock erratics and a sharp increase in vandalism, especially graffiti. In addition to graffiti being unsightly and disrespectful, it threatens the integrity of rock art and red ochre smears that are known to be located on the rocks. Improved photo enhancement has led to discovery of much more rock art at Okotoks than previously known, including in places that have been covered with graffiti. But how to remove graffiti without harming the underlying rock art? This talk explores that question, reports on recent efforts to record the rocks in 3D, reviews graffiti removal episodes and rock art integrity, and considers future directions for management of the troubled Okotoks site. *** Please note room change for this lecture Presented by the Archaeological Society of Alberta - Calgary Centre.
