For many organizations and practitioners the claim of being "evidence-based" gives their work a certain legitimacy and authority. However, despite its widespread acceptance, EBP is the subject of controversy. In this talk, Prof Stanley Witkin will discuss some of these controversies and raise questions about the meanings and uses of EBP. The presentation is free but pre-registration is required. Intersectional Feminism in Immigrant Families (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 31, 2016 - March 31, 2016

Join us for a lunch and learn discussion as part of the “Who Needs Feminism Campaign”. Dr. Pallavi Banerjee, Assistant Professor in the department of Sociology, will be sharing her research on how families are affected by race, gender, and labor regimes. In this session she will explore how state, corporate, and religious institutional policies and practices impact the lives of immigrant, transnational, and minority families in North America. Dr. Banerjee’s research interests are situated at the intersections of immigration, minority families, and gender. Bring your lunch and your questions to this interactive session.

Location:

The Women's Resource Centre (MSC 482)

Speaker:

Dr. Pallavi Banerjee received her Ph.D in Sociology at the University of Illinois and was a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University before coming to the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor of Sociology. Her research interests are situated at the intersections of sociology of families, international immigration, gender/feminist theory and transnationalism. Her research unravels processes through which the state, corporations, and other related institutions operate together as gender and labor regimes to reconfigure the lived experiences of minority and transnational families in public and private spheres. She is currently working on two research projects. The first involves a book manuscript that is tentatively titled Dismantling Dependence: Gendered Migration of Indian Professional Families and the Politics of Visa Regimes. A second project examines the family dynamics of South Asian immigrant women, particularly Muslim women across class locations, religious practices, immigration status, and motherhood.

Poverty Inc - documentary film and panel discussion (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 30, 2016 - March 30, 2016

Poverty Inc. is an award-winning feature length documentary that critically examines the development industry as it has evolved since the end of the Second World War. We've organized a free, on campus viewing and panel discussion so that students and staff have an opportunity to see and discuss this important rethinking about what it means to fight poverty in ways that are effective over the long-term. Too often, charitable intentions can have unintended or outright negative consequences. This event originated as an opportunity for two political science classes, taught by instructor Chris W. J. Roberts, to see a film relevant to both contemporary African politics and the political economy of development. However, we've taken this unique opportunity to open the doors and invite the entire university community. If you have an active or even a passing interest in development, this is a must-see documentary that stimulates hard questions and good discussions. More information about the documentary here: http://www.povertyinc.org As a gauge of interest (versus room capacity), we are asking those interested to register at EventBrite There is no cost.

Why Buddhism and the Modern World Need Each Other with Dr. David Loy (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 28, 2016 - March 28, 2016

"The mercy of the West has been social revolution. The mercy of the East has been individual insight into the basic self/void. We need both." (Gary Snyder) Another way to put it: the highest ideal of the Western tradition has been to restructure our societies so that they are more socially just. The most important goal for Buddhism is to awaken and (to use the Zen phrase) realize one’s true nature, which puts an end to dukkha “suffering” due to the delusion of a separate self. To-day it has become more obvious that we need both: not just because these ideals complement each other, but because each project needs the other. Presented by the Buddhist (Zen) Chaplaincy in partnership with the Faith & Spirituality Centre. David Loy is a visiting scholar in the Department of Classics and Religion. He is a professor of Buddhist Studies, a Zen teacher in the Sanbo Zen tradition, and the author of many books. David lectures nationally and internationally on various topics, focusing primarily on the encounter between Buddhism and modernity: what each can learn from the other. He is especially concerned about social and ecological issues. See: www.davidloy.org

Tenebrae Service (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 24, 2016 - March 24, 2016

Tenebrae: A Service of Shadows The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” is a prolonged meditation on Christ's suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ's passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous event. As lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ's suffering and death; we remember the cataclysmic nature of his sacrifice as we hear the overwhelming sound of the "strepitus"; and through the return of the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the service, we anticipate the joy of ultimate victory. We join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae. Led by the Christian Reformed Chaplaincy in partnership with the Faith & Spirituality Centre.

Mental Health Gala with Mark Henick (University of Calgary)

Dates: March 23, 2016 - March 23, 2016

Click here to register Order of Events Wednesday, March 23, 2016 5:30 pm - Event Begins. 6:00 pm - Introductions and Networking. Refreshments will be provided. 6:15 pm - 7:15 pm - Keynote Mark Henick 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm - Mental Health Gala Begins. Food will be provided. Keynote Event Being an Everyday Advocate If you have a brain, you have mental health. And, like with the rest of the body, sometimes even otherwise good mental health gets interrupted. With about 20% of people experiencing a mental health problem or illness at any given time, it is shocking to learn that so few seek help and receive treatment. A major barrier is the attitude that we have toward mental health. Mark uses his own experience, both as a patient and as a professional, to provide insight. He collapses the difference that we construct between ourselves and those who happen to experience mental health problems and illnesses by demonstrating how common these experiences are. He argues passionately in favour of embracing our vulnerability, tuning in to our psychological needs, and living everyday as an advocate for mental health. Bio: Informed by his direct experience with stigma and the mental health care system as an adolescent, Mark dedicated his life from an early age to opening minds and creating change. He has served as the youngest President of a provincial Canadian Mental Health Association division in history. He is currently the youngest ever board member for the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Mark has authored commentaries on issues relating to mental health for major newspapers across Canada and the U.S. He continues to use his personal experience to provide insight into mental illness, and his TEDx Talk is the highest viewed of the 2013 Toronto conference- with over 500,000 views. The Rhetoric of Hindu India: Nationalism in the Age of Metropolitan Millennials (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 23, 2016 - March 23, 2016

This presentation offers insights into Manisha Basu’s forthcoming book from Cambridge University Press. One of the principal contentions of the book is that the success of Hindu nationalism in the current Indian context is based in a politics of language that attaches a kind of cybernetic global English to an ostensibly pan-Indian culture and idiom, now being fashioned in violently homogeneous terms. It is this politics of language that inscribes for Hindutva an emerging technocratic middle-class—the imperial avatar, in a globalized world, of millennial India. Manisha Basu’s research and teaching interests are in postcolonial studies, South Asian literatures and cultures, Anglophone African literatures, and critical and literary theory. Her essays have appeared in venues like boundary 2, Comparative Literature, and Ariel, amongst others. She is at present working on an edited collection of essays entitled The Aesthetics and Politics of Global Hunger. This event is sponsored by the Postcolonial Studies Research Group. The Postcolonial Studies Research Group gratefully acknowledges the support of the Department of English and the Faculty of Arts.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 22, 2016 - March 22, 2016

Join us on International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. On March 21st 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people and injured more than 300 at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid laws in the township of Sharpeville, South Africa. In 1966, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to commemorate the Sharpeville tragedy. March 21 has since served not only to remind us of the dire consequences of racism, but also to recall our obligation and determination to combat it. As the University of Calgary moves forward in research we also aim to move forward by ending racial discrimination. Please join us in partnership to end racial discrimination and create equity in our communities.

Philosophy Speakers ALUMNI SERIES: Alison Wylie (Washington/Durham), "How Archaeological Evidence Bites Back: Putting Old Data to Work in New Ways" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 18, 2016 - March 18, 2016

About the Talk A passion for things has taken hold in the social sciences and humanities in the form of an enthusiasm for the capacity of material evidence to bear witness to dimensions of social, cultural life that are otherwise inaccessible. As Daston puts it, the bony materiality’ of physical traces of human action sustains a certain epistemic optimism but, at the same time, she reports considerable ambivalence about their status as evidence. To make sense of how trace evidence constrains interpretative inference despite being, itself, a heavily interpreted construct I consider three strategies by which archaeologists elicit new evidence from old data. The first two – secondary retrieval and recontextualization – are a matter of reconfiguring the scaffolding that underpins evidential reasoning. The third turns on redeploying old data in the context of computational models that make possible the experimental simulation of the cultural systems and contexts under study. About the Speaker Alison Wylie is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Washington (Seattle) and Durham University (UK). She works on philosophical issues raised by archaeological practice and by feminist research in the social sciences. In both contexts a flashpoint for internal debate has been the challenge posed by constructionist and contextualist claims: that what counts as evidence is inescapably an interpretive construct, and that social, and that contextual values play a role in all aspects of inquiry. Wylie argues that polarized reactions to these claims obscure more than they illuminate; there’s much of philosophical interest to be learned about how situated knowers do their best work if we start with the messy realities of actual research practice. She focuses on questions about ideals of objectivity, the role of contextual values in research practice, models of evidential reasoning, and issues of accountability to research subjects and other stakeholders. Wylie is co-editor of Material Evidence (2015) and Value-free Science? (2007), author of Thinking from Things (2002), and contributor to collections on topics such as Objectivity in Science (2015), Evidence, Inference and Enquiry (2011), How Well do 'Facts' Travel? (2010), and Agnotology (2008). She recently completed terms as editor of Hypatia and President of the APA (Pacific Division). Witch, Please: Feminist Fandom, Public Pedagogy and Podcasting (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 17, 2016 - March 17, 2016

While podcasting as a medium has thus far been dominated by men, a shift is underway; more and more women are stepping up to the microphone and seizing the means of podcast production. In this presentation, Hannah McGregor and Marcelle Kosman—co-creators and hosts of the Harry Potter fandom podcast Witch, Please—will discuss podcasting as feminist praxis and pedagogy, with a particular focus on theorizing collaboration in terms of women being literally in conversation with each other. Through the intersections of fandom, feminism, and academia, Witch, Please has developed into a counterpublic that makes space for conversation, critique, and rethinking both within and beyond the university. We will look more in depth at three features: a rather oversized, deep post-hole, a several meter long bone-filled pit and an atypical living surface. We were also surprised to discover, two meters below surface, nestled in the watertable, a 7 - 9,000 year old occupation which will be explored as well. Awakening from the Illusion of our Separation: A Buddhist Perspective on the Ecological Crisis (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 16, 2016 - March 16, 2016

The Numata Chair in Buddhist Studies at the University of Calgary presents The Leslie S. Kawamura Memorial Lecture with Dr. David Loy Visiting Scholar Department of Classics & Religion Awakening from the Illusion of our Separation: A Buddhist Perspective on the Ecological Crisis Can Buddhist teachings help us understand and respond to our ecological situation? We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separation, says the Vietnamese Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. There are precise parallels between what traditional Buddhism teaches about our usual individual predicament, and our collective ecological predicament today. This suggests that the eco-crisis is not only a technological and economic problem but also a “spiritual” challenge. If so, can the Buddhist understanding of our personal predicament also help us respond to the collective one?
