Life Without Me? I Really Can’t Imagine Such a Thing! Why We Need Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Personal Directives (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 14, 2016 - May 14, 2016

Most Albertans understand the importance of having a Will in place to ensure that their hard earned property will be distributed in accordance with their wishes if they should pass away suddenly. However, fewer people understand why a Power of Attorney or a Personal Directive is necessary. Not everyone is comfortable talking about the eventualities of death or entering a “persistent vegetative state” while still alive. You ought to create these important documents while they are still have “mental capacity” to ensure that their wishes are known to help family members and friends to look after you and your property according to your specific instructions, if something should happen to you. This presentation discusses the purpose and the legal requirements to write and execute valid documents according to the latest Alberta laws. Most important, it provides an opportunity for people to become better acquainted with the very idea of their own death, the estate you leave behind, and understand why the appointment of an Attorney and Agent is so important. Some of the terminology associated with these documents, such as: personal representatives, attorneys, agents, executors, estates, and trustees will be explained, along with terms like testator, donor, and maker. This event is sponsored by the Alberta Law Foundation. Cost: Free Open to everyone — Limited seating available Register for this event today

Location:

Murray Fraser Hall 3360

Speaker:

Judy Stewart, LLM PhD, will be the presenter. Judy Stewart practices law in Cochrane, Alberta, primarily in municipal and water law. Biostatistics/SAGE (Survival Analysis Group Enhancement) Seminar Series (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 6, 2016 - May 6, 2016

Prof. John Braun is giving the Winter 2016 Biostatistics/SAGE Seminar entitled "De-assisted local polynomial regression": Use of higher-order local polynomial regression is often problematic in cases of data sparsity (which might be a result of data missing at random, for example). Although local constant regression is usable when data is sparse, the results can be misleading. If the underlying regression function is are assumed to satisfy or approximately satisfy a differential equation, a procedure with similar variance properties to local constant regression can be employed while achieving reasonable bias properties. This technique is illustrated with a problem involving growth curves.

Castrum Cumidava in the Context of the Roman Occupation of Dacia (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 20, 2016 - April 20, 2016

The emperor Trajan completed his conquest of Dacia (present-day Transylvania) in 106 CE. However, the Dacians were neither pacified nor ever fully romanized. The latest research conducted by the lecturer (via Braşov Archaeological Projects) suggests the presence of an ongoing native insurgency, one fought more intensely on the eastern frontier of Dacia through the end of the Roman occupation, 271 CE. Through remote-sensing methods, ArcGIS, and landscape analysis, project contributors discovered a significant change in Roman military operations in eastern Dacia, an approach we are confident in effectively calling a counter-insurgency. The Roman counter-insurgency is evidenced in a shift from forts designed to support open-field battles to those positioned at key choke points and manned by smaller, mixed, mobile units suited for guerrilla warfare. To compliment this overarching view of Roman strategy, BAP researchers also examined the material remains and data sets from the excavation of one specific frontier fort: Castrum Cumidava. In completing the narrative of the border experience in eastern Dacia, a more intimate picture of everyday life emerged from the common artifacts and personal effects utilized by the Roman auxiliary soldier stationed in a foreign and hostile environment. In this lecture, the speaker will relate how the everyday experiences of the inhabitants of a site like Castrum Cumidava are key to understanding the complex and violent interactions between Romans and Dacians, from the personal motivations of a career soldier to the political motivations of emperors. Giving a Face to Faceless Victims: Profiles of Disabled Victims of the Nazi ‘Euthanasia’ Program (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 20, 2016 - April 20, 2016

From October 1939 until the final days of World War II, the “euthanasia” (T4) program and its corollary operations claimed the lives of an estimated 200,000 disabled patients residing in institutional settings throughout Germany and in certain regions of German-occupied Europe. Who were the victims of Nazi “euthanasia” policy? Until recently, relatively little research has attempted to reconstruct the lives and fates of T4 victims. Scholarly preoccupation with the over-arching killing apparatus has helped to overshadow the individual identities of these individuals. Lack of adequate documentation has heretofore presented a major obstacle: many patient files have been lost or destroyed, while German privacy laws have ensured that the bulk of these records remained inaccessible to researchers. Utilizing patient files from the Bezirkskrankenhaus Kaufbeuren, formerly a notorious “euthanasia” facility near Augsburg, this presentation will offer a much-needed perspective to a field in which the analysis of process and perpetrator often precludes important questions about the victims themselves. For example, from what economic, educational, and social backgrounds did these persons stem? Which kind of illnesses and conditions most often warranted inclusion in the killing operation? Did a patient’s age, gender, or behavior determine whether that individual lived or died? Why did the “end phase” of the “euthanasia” program witness an increase in instances in mortality of victim who had little or no pathology, a phenomenon documented in anecdotal evidence at a number of T4 institutions? This paper will examine these issues, attempting to construct a patient composite for victims murdered in “euthanasia’s” second killing phase (1942-1945), as represented by the example of Kaufbeuren. An exploration of the comprehensive, yet compact, Kaufbeuren patient-file collection also offers us illustrative case studies which document the lives and deaths of patients at the facility.

Labyrinth: Walking Meditation (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 18, 2016 - April 18, 2016

University of Calgary students are invited to listen to live music or take a walk around a meditation labyrinth to de-stress during final exams. The SU Wellness Centre and the Faith and Spirituality Centre are hosting two unique spaces for students to de-stress and relax during exam week. Students have the opportunity to listen to live music as a way of relaxing and re-focusing, and can participate in a walking meditation to re-energize themselves. “End of term is a challenging time for many students, so it is important for students to have a variety of tools accessible to them to deal with end-of-semester stress and to succeed in their courses,” says Debbie Bruckner, senior director of student wellness, access and support. Two University of Calgary music students Matthew Beaubien and Steven Dorscher will be playing live music in the KNES B Atrium from 11 a.m. until noon every weekday from April 18 to April 27. Labyrinth's large fabric maze is a stress-free space The labyrinth will be set up in the Dance Studio, room KNA 162 and will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Apr. 18 to April 22. “The labyrinth is a great way to centre yourself, to get a grip on yourself. The labyrinth space is a great place to get away from the stress of exams,” says Rev. Tim Nethercott, Christian (United/Presbyterian) chaplain. The labyrinth is made up of a large fabric maze that can be used as a form of walking meditation, for prayer or as a healing modality. There will be mats for resting and low lighting. Whether students just need a quick study break or they need to clear their mind before an exam, both spaces will be available to help. Tips and strategies for exam preparation When preparing for exams, students may find the following strategies helpful: Start early Plan your review Practise the skills and behaviours you will have to demonstrate on the test Get feedback as you study Take care of your physical and emotional well-being as you study For more information, please visit the academic and career section in the SU Wellness Centre’s online Wellness Guide. If you have students experiencing exam anxiety, they may benefit from taking this short interactive online module.

University of Calgary and community agencies host seminar series for displaced oil and gas workers Recent reports estimate 20,000 Calgarians have lost their jobs, despite the fact that they hold critical skills and years of training. In response to this serious economic downturn, Calgary Economic Development is facilitating a series of seminars for those displaced in the oil and gas industry. The University of Calgary is working with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Centre for Suicide Information and Calgary Counselling Centre to organize a seminar on maintaining mental health resiliency during an economic downturn. Philosophy Speakers: Cheryl Misak (Toronto), "The Subterrranean Influence of Pragmatism on the Vienna Circle" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 15, 2016 - April 15, 2016

About the Talk An under-appreciated fact in the history of analytic philosophy is that American pragmatism had an early and strong influence on the Vienna Circle. That path – from Charles Peirce to Frank Ramsey to Ludwig Wittgenstein to Moritz Schlick – is traced in this paper, and along the way some standard understandings of Ramsey and Wittgenstein, especially, are radically altered. About the Speaker Cheryl Misak is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Her research interests are in pragmatism, history of analytic philosophy, philosophy of medicine, ethics, and political philosophy. She is the author of The American Pragmatists (Oxford), Truth, Politics, Morality (Routledge), Truth and the End of Inquiry(Oxford), and Verificationism: Its History and Prospects (Routledge). An Introduction to Autoethnography (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 12, 2016 - April 12, 2016

Autoethnography is a form of narrative inquiry that uses the researcher’s/participant’s lived experience to illuminate social and cultural contexts of meaning. Often written in an engaging, evocative style, autoethnography generates ways of knowing not typically present in conventional research. Its accessibility and ability to confront issues of marginalization and injustice make it highly relevant to social work and the human services. Register online for this free event.

Philosophy Speakers ALUMNI SERIES: John Campbell (UC Berkeley), "Some Varieties of Mental Causation" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 8, 2016 - April 8, 2016

About the Talk A contrast is often drawn between thinking of physical causation in terms of counterfactual dependence with thinking of it in terms of a process linking cause and effect. My main point in this talk is that we can draw a similar contrast between different ways of thinking of mental causation. The central problem this raises is how to characterize the notion of a ‘mental process’. About the Speaker John Campbell is Willis S. and Marion Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. His main interests are in theory of meaning, metaphysics, and philosophy of psychology. He is currently working on the causation in psychology. His most recent book (with Quassim Cassam) is Berkeley’s Puzzle (Oxford UP, 2014). Campbell (UCalgary MA ‘79) is the final speaker in the Department's 2016 Alumni Series. Campbell's Berkeley Page

Political Science Speaker Series: Dr. Fred Cutler (UBC) (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 8, 2016 - April 8, 2016

"Institutions, Contexts, and Citizens' Judgments of Their Democracy" About the Talk: In this paper we critique existing research on citizens’ Satisfaction with Democracy (SWD) and propose conceptual and empirical solutions to several problems. This paper proposes an encompassing theoretical model of institutional and individual-level determinants of citizens’ satisfaction with democracy and then estimates that model with cross-national survey and macro data. The key step is starting with a well-specified individual-level model of SWD separate from the effects of institutions on the individual-level determinants. We then employ state-of-the-art multilevel mediation models (Preacher et al. 2010) to estimate this model on a merged dataset of ESS and country-level contextual data. Thus, the first step in successfully estimating such a model is theoretical: to properly specify the relationship from contextual factors (especially institutions) through possible individual-level mediators, to the outcome of interest – Satisfaction with Democracy. The results show that citizens’ judgments of democracy are based mostly in outputs and lived experience, not in institutional variation or its political consequences. (With Andrea Nuesser and Ben Nyblade).

Location:

Social Science Tower - Room 729

Speaker:

Fred Cutler (Ph.D. Michigan) is an Associate Professor of Political Science at UBC and Academic Chair of the Faculty of Arts Instructional Support and Information Technology unit.
