Chūshingura & the Edo Literary Imagination (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 25, 2016 - February 25, 2016

Speaker: Professor William Fleming (Assistant Professor, East Asian Languages, Literatures and Theater Studies, Yale University) In the spring of 1701, a daimyō from western Japan drew his sword against a senior shogunal official within the hallowed halls of Edo Castle. This rash, split-second decision set in motion a dramatic chain of events that is retold in a theatrical masterpiece that remains one of Japan’s most captivating and enduring cultural markers: Chūshingura, the story of the forty-seven rōnin. Chūshingura enjoyed immediate success on stage and quickly captured the Japanese popular imagination, inspiring all manner of imitators, adaptations, and parodies. This talk introduces several works of comic pictorial fiction based on the Chūshingura story and considers their significance as products of the flourishing literary culture of early modern Japan. Movies that Matter presents Haida Gwaii: On the Edge of the World, the winner of the Best Canadian Documentary award at HotDocs 2015, with director Charles Wilkinson in attendance! Since contact, the island has been subject to rampant logging and over-fishing that threatens the natural world. In addition, the island sits directly in the path of the proposed Oil Sands pipeline to Asia. As the outside, commercial world threatens this natural paradise, the need for awareness is stronger than ever. Women, Business and the Law (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 23, 2016 - February 23, 2016

The University of Calgary International is pleased to invite you to a presentation by Sarah Iqbal on the World Bank’s “Women, Business and the Law” project. Tuesday, February 23, 2015 | 1.30-3.30pm (Free Event) The TFDL Gallery Hall, University of Calgary Distinguished Guest Speaker | Presentation | Discussion Sarah Iqbal is the coordinator of the the World Bank Group’s Women, Business and the Law project. Since its inception in 2009, Women, Business and the Law (http://wbl.worldbank.org/) has collected unique data on laws and regulations constraining women's entrepreneurship and employment. The dataset illuminates how government policies limit women's full economic participation through unequal laws and a business environment which does not adequately support the businesses women tend to concentrate in. Though legal gender parity has improved around the world, major differences persist. Many laws and regulations continue to prevent women from improving their own well-being and that of their families by working or running a business. How can governments improve regulations to benefit women entrepreneurs and workers? To RSVP, please contact Nalini Andrade at Nalini.andrade1@ucalgary.ca or (403) 220-7051

Exhibition: Mediation, on the other hand, is a control function (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 22, 2016 - February 25, 2016

Fran Gordon is a printmaker and image-maker working with found photographic and film sources. Her new body of work, produced in the past 6 weeks from her exchange to the University of Calgary, explores the idea of the mediated image through assembling and reassembling selected found imagery. Our heavily documented world can feel both close and distant, blurred, mirrored, unreal, and out of our control. Through intuitive and rhythmic image making, a question arises of how images can exist in digital and physical spaces, becoming both a representation and a misrepresentation of the real. Mediation, on the other hand, is a control function refers to a mechanical like approach in how we consume imagery; this repetitive abstracted motion is much like the artists approach to making through printmaking. Printmaking forms a frame for questioning to explore the very themes of the process: that of appropriation, reproduction and the multiple. I use this process in its broadest terms, sometimes relying solely on a photocopier to re-appropriate imagery. The ideas behind this body of work sit between memory and imagination. I have been exploring imagery of futures, histories and proposed places. Between these places an exploration of my own identity as Scottish and the landscape and thoughts I have toward my home, having moved from it, have too formed some of these works. The ideas of fragmentation and time have become apparent. Making tactile works with layers, censored areas and abstracted landscapes hint at our reliance on photographs, digital archives and forced time scales within technology, to experience the world and give us a sense of place. Much like our relationship with technology, the work hints at the unfinished, the undecided and the possible. There is a questioning and an overlap of different ideas to the works: home, identity, place, future and reality. Since moving to London I have been questioning the tensions of my identity as a Scottish person and where that thought exists within London post Scottish referendum. Fran Gordon lives and works in London. Gordon graduated in Communication Design from the Glasgow School of Art in 2014 and currently studies MA Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Recent exhibitions, awards and residencies include: You will recognise its various parts, Solo Exhibition, Glasgow (2015), Stargazing, The Pier Arts Centre (2015), Hospitalfield Arts Graduate Residency Programme (2014), Grafik Magazine New Talent Feature (2014), People of Print Graduate Print Awards (2014).

Sigma Xi Seminar: The Transition to a Lower Carbon Based Economy - The effect on Agriculture and Key Materials for an Industrialized Society (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 18, 2016 - February 18, 2016

Sigma Xi Seminar - presented by Dr. Peter David Clark Oil, natural gas and coal not only energize an industrialized economy but also provide all raw materials for agriculture and construction. For agriculture, fossil fuel provides the most crucial fertilizers as well as the energy to mechanize its operation and distribution systems. Steel and cement, without which it is difficult to envisage a modern society, cannot be made at the required scale without coal or oil residua. Interestingly, a wind turbine relies completely on fossil fuel for its construction. The same story is true for nuclear reactors and solar panels. This lecture will discuss these issues and present a road map for future development of the World's most important industry, agriculture, at least in terms of fertilization and large scale mechanization (steel). This analysis shows that natural gas, oil sands and other heavy oils will be needed in the future lower carbon economy because of the materials these energy sources provide. Thursday 18th February at 4:00 pm in Biological Sciences room 211 Sponsored by Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, Members and Non-members welcome

Harry Potter's World: Renaissance, Science, Magic, and Medicine (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 16, 2016 - March 26, 2016

"There was a lot more magic, as Harry quickly found out, then waving your wand and saying a few funny word." -Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, J.K. Rowling. In 1997, British author J.K. Rowling introduced the world to Harry Potter and a literary phenomenon was born. Millions of readers have followed Harry to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he discovers his heritage, encounters new plants and animals, and perfects his magical abilities. Although a fantasy story, the magic in the Harry Potter books is partially based on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science, including alchemy, astrology, and natural philosophy. Incorporating the work of several 15th- and 16th-century thinkers, the seven-part series examines important ethical topics such as the desire for knowledge, the effects of prejudice, and the responsibility that comes with power. This exhibition, using materials from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, explores Harry Potter's world and its roots in Renaissance magic, science, and medicine. Health Science's library, RM 1450, Foothills Campus. February 16 to March 26, 2016. Monday through Thursday, 8am to 10pm. Friday's 8am to 6pm. Saturday's 10am to 6pm. Closed Sunday's. ManEnough? Program Information Session (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 11, 2016 - February 11, 2016

Join the ManEnough? Program Information Session! The information session is open to all individuals. We know that men are often faced with the question “are you man enough?” This question usually brings to mind images of boys or men challenging the “manliness” of their peers and encouraging them to measure up to a stereotypical idea of what a man should be. However, it is this stereotypical concept of what it means to be a man that is what really needs to be challenged. Without doing so these ideas contribute to harmful attitudes and beliefs that allow gender inequality and violence to continue. ManEnough? program is offered by the Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse. Through the “ManEnough?” Program men will have a series of conversations in which they can explore what it means to be a “man;” examine and understand attitudes and beliefs that contribute to gender inequality; and embrace the power they have to influence a culture accepting of violence. The program will be held on Thursday nights from 6:00pm to 9:00pm beginning Thursday, March 10th, 2016 with sessions taking place weekly for eight weeks. The program registration is limited to male identified individuals.

Location:

The Women's Resource Centre (MSC 482)

Mythology of the Sky Open House (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 6, 2016 - February 6, 2016

Explore the legends of ancient Greece in the February night sky The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory’s first Open House of the year is happening Saturday, February 6, with a special presentation by Lisa Hughes from the University of Calgary’s Greek and Roman Studies department. Join the RAO for a fascinating evening recounting the epic tales of the Ancient Greek heroes, goddesses, legends, and clashes, and learn where to spot them in the constellations of the February night sky. The open house will feature access to an array of telescopes operated by University of Calgary astronomers and members of the Royal Astronomical Society. Visitors will also have the opportunity to look through the RAO’s telescopes (weather permitting), with astronomers on hand to answer questions. If the sky is clear, Jupiter is visible later in the evening, and a waning sliver of a moon should create great viewing conditions. Learn more about the RAO online at http://www.ucalgary.ca/rao/or on Twitter @RAOastronomy.

Philosophy Speakers: Matt Haber (Utah): "The Individuality Thesis and the Levels of Lineage" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 5, 2016 - February 5, 2016

About the Talk Michael Ghiselin and David Hull’s individuality thesis was initially offered in terms of species, i.e., that species are individuals (and not natural kinds, sets, or classes). Much of this discussion initially took place in the context of debates in biological systematics and the emergence of phylogenetics. Here I re-articulate and defend the individuality thesis as a theoretical perspective, identifying three core commitments: (1) the parity thesis; (2) the history thesis; and (3) the part/whole thesis. I argue that this provides (i) a broader view of the individuality thesis than other recent presentations; (ii) a means for precisely articulating the role it plays in theorizing, explanations, and setting research problems; and (iii) the resources to meet recent philosophical challenges and advances/discoveries from the biological sciences. More specifically, I argue that the individuality thesis is still relevant even faced with challenges to the coherency of the individual/kinds distinction, and with regard to a growing appreciation and accumulation of evidence supporting a high degree of genealogical discordance across lineages. More so, the individuality thesis provides an excellent framing to account for microbial introgression and other lineage complexity, holobiont evolution, and high degrees of persistent, generational symbiosis. About the Speaker Matt Haber is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Utah. He holds additional appointments at the University of Utah as Associate Faculty in the Center for Quantitative Biology and Associate Faculty in Latin American Studies. His area of specialty is Philosophy of Biology and Philosophy of Science. He is interested in the philosophical and conceptual issues in systematics, particularly those stemming from a commitment to phylogenetic thinking. His current projects include elucidating the nature of phylogenetic inference, tracking conceptual debates in biological classification and nomenclature, examining the use of models in phylogenetics, the ontology of biological objects, and accounting for how (and why) scientists shift from one set of theoretical and conceptual commitments to another. Other topics of interest are research ethics, including a project on the ethics of research involving crossing species boundaries (especially the human/non-human boundary).

Online, all the time: How Digital Platforms are Contributing to Permanent Campaigning In Canada. (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 3, 2016 - February 3, 2016

You're invited to a talk by Dr. Thierry Giasson, who is currently a professor in the Department of Political Science at the Universitè Laval, Quebec City. Online, all the time: How Digital Platforms are Contributing to Permanent Campaigning In Canada. There are few areas of our social, economic, cultural and political lives that have remained untouched by digital networked technologies. In the last ten years, research on web politics has mostly focused on the transformations that online technologies have imposed on political actors (parties, lobbies, activists, governments, candidates) in the way they engage and communicate with their stakeholders. This presentation explains how, in the understudied inter-election context, Canadian federal parties are using web-based technologies in their permanent campaigning efforts. Using data from in-depth interviews with communication directors and digital strategists of federal parties in Canada, we describe the objectives underpinning the extensive online campaigns they have developed since the 2011 elections. The interviews reveal that Canadian political parties have now fully integrated web technologies as part of their permanent campaign, mainly for resource collection and communication imperatives, but also because these digital networked platforms provide useful collaborative and mobilizing opportunities considered as enhancing on-going campaigning efforts. https://www.grcp.ulaval.ca/thierry-giasson The talk is free and all are welcome to attend.
