As we expand our organization and incorporate, we are focused on building a strong and effective leadership team to drive our mission forward. Through targeted initiatives and collaborative efforts, we aim to create a safer online environment for everyone. Role DescriptionWe are currently seeking volunteer Board Members to join our team and play an essential role in guiding DEFEND’s strategic direction and maintaining our mission. Board Members will meet once per month via Zoom (approximately one hour per session) and will work closely with our Committee and executive staff/volunteer Volunteers (who are running the corporation on a day-to-day basis) to oversee organizational policies, financial decisions, and overall mission alignment. This role is ideal for individuals with experience in administration or management, though no prior board experience is necessary.Key ResponsibilitiesAttend Monthly Meetings: Participate in a monthly 1-hour Zoom meeting to discuss goals, initiatives, and strategies.Collaborate with the Committee: Communicate as needed with Committee members who oversee various organizational teams.Policy and Bylaw Development: Review and assess corporate policies and contribute to the development of bylaws to guide the organization’s activities.Financial Oversight: Evaluate and oversee large expenditures, investments, and liabilities to ensure alignment with DEFEND’s mission and financial health.Executive Oversight: Hire executive-level staff and make decisions regarding their compensation if applicable.QualificationsExperience: Prior experience in administration or management is helpful but not required.Commitment: Willingness to dedicate one hour per month to board meetings and additional time as needed to communicate with team members.Leadership: Interest in guiding an organization’s strategic mission, along with a commitment to online safety and protecting vulnerable populations.Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with team members across various channels.Why Join Us? This volunteer role involves leading petitions, protests, and community initiatives to advocate for safer digital environments for kids. You will be at the forefront of our movement, connecting with local stakeholders, building awareness, and organizing action. As the movement grows, top-performing volunteers may have the opportunity to transition into paid roles!We have done a Change.org petition, which has gained over 10,000 signatures, to make age and ID verification mandatory on all social media platforms, aiming to prevent adults from engaging in inappropriate conversations with minors online. Our next steps include organizing protests, rallies, and a hardcopy petition campaign across the United States and Canada, with plans to expand globally to drive this mission forward. As a Committee Member, you will help guide and oversee the organization’s goals, ensuring that our mission remains at the core of all decisions. You will meet weekly via Zoom to discuss long-term objectives, project plans, and strategies to advance our mission. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to significant social change and be a part of a dynamic and impactful nonprofit team. Responsibilities Attend and contribute to three weekly Zoom meetings, with a break on the fourth week. Collaborate with team members to discuss progress, refine project plans, and set actionable steps for long-term goals. Support efforts to mandate age/ID verification on social media, ensuring children and vulnerable persons are safer online. Contribute to the evaluation and creation of organizational policies. Work within teams to achieve project milestones of varying scales. Attend and vote on group interviews for candidates applying to join DEFEND teams or committees. Qualifications Commitment to DEFEND’s mission to protect children and vulnerable persons online. Strong communication skills, with an ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment. Previous experience in nonprofit management, policy development, or project management is an asset but not required. Ability to dedicate a few hours per week to attend meetings and contribute to projects.
