Margarete Wuensche Memorial Lecture: Neuroscience and Society The Hotchkiss Brain Institute is pleased to present the eleventh annual Margarete Wuensche Memorial Lecture: Neuroscience and Society on Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Keynote Speaker: Prof. Colin Blakemore Professor of Neuroscience & Philosophy, School of Advanced Study, University of London Emeritus Professor of Neuroscience, University of Oxford Lecture: What's so special about the human brain? The human brain is big, but not not as large as that of an elephant, some whales or even Neanderthal man. The fundamental features of our nerve cells and our cerebral cortex are very similar to those of a mouse. One after another, the so-called unique characteristics of human cognition have been clearly demonstrated in other species (including in scrub jays, with tiny brains). Yet there clearly is something different about human beings. Elephants can't talk; whales haven't invented science; and, as far as we know, there are no autistic scrub jays. So, what exactly is special about the human brain? Wednesday, May 14, 2014 Lecture begins at 5:00 pm Libin Lecture Theatre Health Science Centre Foothills Campus Reception to follow This event is open to all interested campus and community members. Category: Other EventDates: May 7, 2014 - May 7, 2014
“Religious Diversity in Canada: Secularism, Multiculturalism, Pluralism” with Dr. Peter Beyer When: Wednesday, May 7, 2014 Time: 10:00am-11:00am Where: The Loft, MSC 487 (next to Women's Resource Centre) Register here: http://rels.ucalgary.ca/beyer The topic of religious diversity in Canada introduces a number of ambiguities. On the one hand, we appear to celebrate and promote such diversity. On the other hand, religion and the diversity of religion appear to be worrying sources of potential problems and contradictions. Taking its cue from research being conducted under the umbrella of the Canada-wide and international Religion and Diversity Project, this lecture focuses on four central issues: how do we in Canada, as individuals, groups, and institutions understand religious diversity; how do we seek to expressly limit that diversity; why and how does controversy surrounding religious diversity seem to manifest itself more often than not with reference to gender, sexuality and uses of the body; and what might it mean to relate to religious diversity in ways that move beyond simply tolerating and accommodating it? Bio: Dr. Peter Beyer, Full Professor, Department of Classics and Religious Studies, University of Ottawa In the earlier parts of his career, Peter Beyer focused his research primarily on sociological theory of religion and on themes in Canadian religious history, doing his doctoral dissertation on the Louis Riel and postdoctoral studies on 19th and 20th century French Canadian Roman Catholicism. Since the mid-1980s, however, his main interests have centred on the sociological understanding of the relations between religion and globalization and on religion in contemporary Canada. His current research focuses on religious diversity and multiculturalism in Canada, especially as concerns recent immigrants and the second generation of these immigrants. He was chair of the department from 1996-2004.

Category: Other EventDates: May 7, 2014 - May 7, 2014
The Werklund School of Education invites you to attend a 90 minute conversation with Dr. Courtney B. Cazden on Wednesday May 7th. 4pm – 5.30pm Education Tower, Room 1220. RSVP to educ.adminoffice@ucalgary.ca Courtney B. Cazden is Charles William Elliot Emeritus Professor of Education, Graduate School of Education, Harvard University. Over the past half century, her work has set the grounds for the qualitative analysis of classroom interaction and talk. Her continuing work on language and literacy learning in classrooms is used internationally and focuses on equity and social justice for students of cultural and linguistic minorities, and socially and economically marginalized communities. Professor Courtney Cazden's book, 'Classroom Discourse' is considered a classic work in the analysis of teacher/student interaction and learning in the classroom. It set the terms for our analysis of the "I/R/F" or "I/R/E" exchange structure of teacher/student talk. The work brings together many strands from Professor Cazden's distinguished career as an educational researcher and scholar. Working at Harvard University in the 1960s, Professor Cazden was one of the first researchers to focus on the impacts and implications of social class on classroom learning and interaction. When working with Dell Hymes and colleagues, she made major contributions to the emergent application of the "ethnography of communications" and "sociolinguistics" to the study of schooling and education. In the 1970s, she returned to the elementary classroom as a teacher, a journey partly documented in Hugh Mehan's book, 'Learning Lessons', also a major breakthrough in the analysis of classroom exchange structures. In the past half-century, this work has focused and continued to focus on the learning experiences of working class, cultural and linguistic minority and Indigenous students in classrooms. During this session, moderated by her collaborator and colleague Allan Luke, Professor Cazden will discuss the foundational roots and influences on her work, reinterpret some key findings and key issues of educational research over the past half century, and the current projects and writing she is undertaking.

Category: Other EventDates: May 7, 2014 - May 7, 2014
Finding Our Common Humanity: Building Bridges Between Atheists and Theists with Chris Stedman Welcome address by President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Elizabeth Cannon. Join us for a very special evening address by renowned activist Chris Stedman as he shares his personal journey towards inclusion and social justice. In his book Faitheist, Chris Stedman makes a passionate argument that atheists should engage religious diversity respectfully. Becoming aware of injustice, and craving community, Stedman became a “born-again” Christian only to encounter staunch homophobia at a time when he was slowly coming to realize that he was gay. The great suffering he experienced might have turned Stedman into a life-long “New Atheist.” But over time he came to know more open-minded Christians, and found that his disdain and hostility toward religion was holding him back from engaging in meaningful work with people of faith. As someone who has stood on both sides of the divide, Stedman is uniquely positioned to present a way for atheists and the religious to find common ground and work together to make this world—the one world we can all agree on—a better place. "Why Are Adult Women Missing? Son Preference and Maternal Survival in India" Abstract: This paper is the first to show that excess mortality among adult women can be partly explained by strong preference for male children, the same cultural norm widely known to cause excess mortality before birth or at young ages. Using pooled individual-level data for India, the paper compares the age structure and anemia status of women by the sex of their first-born and uncovers several new findings. First, the share of living women with a first-born girl is a decreasing function of the women’s age at the time of the survey. Second, while there are no systematic differences at the time of birth, women with a first-born girl are significantly more likely to develop anemia when young (under the age of 30) and these differences disappear for older women. Moreover among those in the older age group, they appear to be significantly better off in terms of various predetermined characteristics. These findings are consistent with a selection effect in which maternal and adult mortality is higher for women with first-born girls, especially the poor and uneducated with limited access to health care and prenatal sex diagnostic technologies. To ensure the desired sex composition of children, these women resort to a fertility behavior medically known to increase their risk of death. The observed sex ratios for first births imply that 2.2–8.4 percent of women with first-born girls are ‘missing’ because of son preference between the ages of 30 and 49.

Balistreri (University of Calgary)

"Optimal Environmental Border Adjustments Under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade" ABSTRACT: We consider the legal and economic context for border adjustments that might be used to augment subglobal carbon abatement. Following Markusen (1975) we establish optimal border policy in the presence of cross-border environmental damages. The optimal border policy includes a strategic component that is inconsistent with legal commitments under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Incorporating GATT compliance into the theory indicates an optimal border adjustment that taxes the carbon content of trade below the domestic carbon price. This theoretic finding is in contrast to the standard advice to impose the domestic carbon price on the carbon content of trade. The wedge between the domestic carbon price and the optimal environmental border adjustment occurs in general equilibrium because border adjustments inadvertently drive up consumption of emissions intensive goods in unregulated regions. We conclude our analysis with numeric simulations of Annex-I carbon policy. We find an optimal import tariff on the carbon content of aluminum that is on the order of 50% of the domestic carbon price. Countries that impose border carbon adjustments at the domestic carbon price will be extracting rents from unregulated regions at the expense of efficient environmental policy and consistency with international law.

Category: Other EventDates: April 17, 2014 - April 17, 2014
Although rock art is literally ‘written in stone’, it is unfortunately not as un-changing or stable as this expression of permanence might suggest. The rock substrate upon which rock art is created can be affected by natural deterioration, surface weathering of the rock art itself, and by subsequent inscriptions and acts of vandalism. As part of a project to nominate Writing-on-Stone (WOS) Provincial Park for UNESCO World Heritage Site status, the rock art panels at the Park have been systematically monitored for the last four years. Possibly the only program of its kind in Canada, the following paper details the implementation and progress of the monitoring program thus far and presents some of our initial findings. Southern Bolivia, northern Chile and northwestern Argentina were co-occupied in prehistory by a range of communities. In order to explore the ways ceramics were used to express and consolidate relationships across this large geographic expanse, we developed a multi-disciplinary, multi-national team of scholars which uses multiple lines of archaeometric evidence to characterize various ceramic styles. This paper details our research protocol and some of our case studies as examples of how we aim to understand changes in ceramic production and consumption at a regional level. Our principal means of data collection so far is through portable X-Ray Fluorescent instruments at a series of North and South American museums. These data permit broad understanding of the chemical profiles of well-known styles and provide hypotheses for subsequent stages of research. Contact http://arkycalgary.com/

Category: Other EventDates: April 11, 2014 - April 11, 2014
Many factors contribute to our health and to the health of our communities. Although lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise play a large part in this, our built environments – the buildings, parks, schools, road systems, and other infrastructure that define our communities – also play a vital role in what keeps us healthy, and what could potentially make us sick. The University of Calgary is partnering with the City of Calgary to bring a day dedicated to exploring the relationship between urban design and the health of our communities — establishing strategies to sustain and improve human and environmental well-being to make Calgary healthier and more productive. Truly healthy places are those designed and built to “improve the quality of life for all people who live, work, learn, and play within their borders — where every person is free to make choices amid a variety of healthy, available, accessible, and affordable options” (World Health Organization). This event will provide opportunities for individuals across the spectrum of public health, urban planning, architecture, academia, and government, to come together and find new ways to design a better future for Calgary. This event is brought to you by the University of Calgary's Faculty of Environmental Design and the Institute for Public Health, the Urban Alliance, the City of Calgary, and Alberta Health Services.

Category: Other EventDates: April 11, 2014 - April 11, 2014
In this paper, I take up two questions. First, what does it mean to say that someone creates their own luck? At least colloquially speaking, luck is conceived as something out of an agent's control. So how could an agent increase or decrease the likelihood that they'll be lucky? Building on some recent work on the metaphysics of luck, I'll argue that there is a sense in which agents can create their own luck. Second, what implications does this conception of luck have for related topics such as how we evaluate performances (like shooting an arrow), including coming to know something? The ubiquitous presence of luck in our actions is often under-appreciated. I'll argue that we need a more nuanced view of how luck sometimes undermines credit for success in agents' actions. The upshot of my view is that while luck may undermine the creditworthiness of an agent's success, it only partially undermines creditworthiness. [Note: This paper will be part of an invited special volume on luck being put together by Duncan Pritchard for Metaphilosophy. It will also be part of a spin-off book with Routledge.] About the Speaker Rachel McKinnon (PhD Waterloo) is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Calgary. She specializes in epistemology and philosophy of language, and her primary research currently focuses on the relationship between knowledge and action. "Sopoyaapistsiyiita: Aboriginal Consultation and Archaeology in Western Canada" The consultation process typically consists of four parts: desktop review of the proposed project, face-to-face meetings with Aboriginal groups, field visits and assessments, and sometimes construction monitoring in areas of concern. Aspects of this process have worked well for some stakeholders, but not all. One of the most difficult hurdles for consultation is reconciling Aboriginal and Scientific worldviews during the fieldwork phase of a project. For example, the definition of an archaeological or historical resource often differs between Aboriginal groups and archaeologists. What the archaeologist considers significant does not always align with what Aboriginal groups consider significant. The current regulatory framework is nebulous, too often forcing Aboriginal groups and industry into confrontation over what is expected of all stakeholders. Aboriginal consultation occurs within a complex cultural and economic framework that needs to be better understood by all parties. Best practices an regulatory guidelines are required to establish a framework so that the process can benefit all stakeholders. Sopoyaapistsiyiita means “listen carefully” in Blackfoot. This type of listening is what is required to bring all stakeholders to the table and to ensure everyone better understands the other. Listening will also be key in the development of best practices and clear regulations. For more information, please visit the Archaeology Beyond the Academy webpage.
