Philosophy Speakers: Ralph Wedgwood (USC) "Rationality as a Virtue" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 10, 2014 - October 10, 2014

It is argued here that the concept of "rationality" that appears in formal epistemology and decision theory is the concept of a kind of virtue. Moreover, we can gain insights into this concept from some class discussions of virtue within the history of ethics, such as the discussions of Plato, Aristotle, Kant, and the 18th-century British moralist Richard Price. Interpreting the concept of "rationality" as a concept of a kind of virtue helps us to solve several problems concerning this concept. First, this interpretation helps us to understand the relations between "rationality" and "rational requirements". Secondly, it helps us to understand the distinction that is often signalled by the terms "propositional" and "doxastic justification". Finally, it can help us to address the following problem: many formal epistemologists and decision theorists claim that rationality involves having mental states with certain formal features -- such as probabilistic coherence in one's beliefs or the like; but it is not obviously even possiblefor ordinary agents to have mental states with these formal features. If "rationality" is a normative concept, the claim that rationality requires these formal features seems to conflict with the principle that 'ought' implies 'can'. Interpreting rationality as a virtue points towards a solution to this problem. About the Speaker - Ralph Wedgwood is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California. His main research interests are in ethics (including meta-ethics, practical reason, normative ethics, and the history of ethics) and epistemology. The author of The Nature of Normativity (OUP), he has also contributed chapters to numerous anthologies and has published over 40 articles in the past decade in journals such as Oxford Studies in Normative Ethics, Synthese, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and the Philosophical Review. The Square The Square is a revolutionary film about change and the power of people. From the 2011 overthrow of a 30-year dictator, through military rule, and culminating with the forced military removal of the Muslim Brotherhood president in the summer of 2013, the much-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated documentary The Square, follows a group of Egyptian activists as they battle leaders and regimes, and risk their lives to build a new society of conscience. The Square is a live developing story of the quintessential struggle for freedom and democracy, of people putting everything on the line to fight for their rights against institutional powers. Egypt has become a battleground of ideas, and the films shows that it is the most devout of Muslims that will take to the street to fight the abuse of religion to create a fascist state. For the first time, Muslims in vast numbers are fighting against political Islam, and what happens in Egypt will dramatically affect the rest of the Middle East and the world.

Visiting Artist: Guillaume Adjutor (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 3, 2014 - October 3, 2014

The work of Guillaume Adjutor Provost questions the presentation and representation inherent to autonomous objects. By association, he creates non-linear narratives where invested sources gather at the crossing of investigation and storytelling. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the projects of Adjutor advocate a hybrid status among visual arts, design, literature and the curatorial. Therefore, he investigates the artistic practice as a moving object that fluidly passes from one state to another. Adjutor works and lives in Montreal. He is currently pursuing his doctorate at the Université du Québec à Montréal. His area of research focuses on curatorial strategies as creative gestures. Adjutor has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions across Quebec and Ontario, as well as in the United States, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and France. All are welcome!

How Goverments Influence Energy Development - The Role of Policy and Regulation (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 26, 2014 - September 26, 2014

Abstract The development of Canada's energy resources supports our national prosperity, ensures our physical comfort, safety and security, gives us exceptional mobility and provides the raw materials that produce many of the goods we consume in our daily lives. The vast majority of our energy resources are owned by Canada's federal and provincial governments on behalf of its citizens. Governments steward the development of these resources through the formation and implementation of legislation, policy and regulation to ensure that development occurs in an economically beneficial, environmentally responsible and safe and secure manner. This legislation, policy and regulation impacts every aspect of energy resource development and it will intersect your engineering career a myriad of ways and times. Speaker Dan McFadyen, Program Director, Extractive Resource Governance Program, The School of Public Policy Dan McFadyen joined The School of Public Policy as an Executive Fellow in September, 2013, and was appointed Program Director, Extractive Resource Governance Program at The School in June, 2014. He has served as Chairman and CEO of the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) from February 1, 2008 until December 2012. As Chairman, Mr. McFadyen was responsible for directing the ERCB’s regulatory mandate governing energy resource development in Alberta. Before joining the ERCB, he served as Alberta Deputy Minister of Energy from January 2006 to December 2008. Over the course of his distinguished career, Mr. McFadyen has served as Vice President for Regulatory Affairs and Public Policy with the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association, Deputy Minister of Energy in Nova Scotia and has held senior leadership positions with Saskatchewan public service.

Opening Reception for Made In Calgary exhibition (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 25, 2014 - September 25, 2014

Organized by Glenbow Museum in collaboration with Nickle Galleries, curated by Katherine Ylitalo Made in Calgary is a five-part exhibition series that explores the character of Calgary's artistic community from 1960 to 2010. Each exhibition will reflect the contributions of individual artists in the context of the social and cultural factors that influenced their work. Glenbow has collaborated with MOCA Calgary for the 1980s exhibition, and with Contemporary Calgary for the 1990s. The fifth and final installment of the Made in Calgary series will present what is perhaps the most relevant work – that which reflects the boom and bust cycles of previous decades to set the stage for the network of artists and institutions that we find today. Guest curator Katherine Ylitalo will bring together work from a decade that is both the culmination of 50 years and the springboard to our present day. This is the last in a series of five exhibitions examining the work of Calgary artists from 1960 to 2010. This particular exhibition covers work from the 2000s and includes the work of 29 Calgary-based artists.

Man Enough? (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 24, 2014 - September 24, 2014

Participants wanted for "Man Enough?" Program Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse is committed to the prevention of sexual violence by bringing awareness to root causes and foundational beliefs that perpetuate violence, many of which are connected to traditional ideals of masculinity. Engaging boys and men has been recognized as an important component of creating communities free from sexual violence. CCASA is excited to announce that the “ManEnough?” program will once again be running this fall at the University of Calgary with the support of the Women’s Resource Centre. The “ManEnough?” Program provides a safe space for male identified people to speak on issues related to the societal view of masculinity and its relation to a culture accepting of sexual violence. This program is designed to assist men in the development of the skills needed to challenge attitudes and beliefs that support violence and to explore alternative constructions of masculinity that promote equality, as men who are invested in healthy relationships with their own masculinity will go on to have healthy relationships with others. CCASA has had great success, first in engaging members of the community and then students of the University of Calgary campus, in sustaining a committed group of men dedicated to exploring their own masculinity and the power they hold as men to influence a culture that allows other men to be violent. If you or someone that you know is interested in learning more about how to become part of the “ManEnough?” The Women's Resource Centre and CCASA are offering two information sessions: September 24 at 12:00 (noon) September 25 at 5:00 pm. Both will be held at the Women’s Resource Centre in MacEwan Hall. For more information on CCASA and the “ManEnough?” Program please visit the CCASA website by clicking here If you are a professional and are interested in learning more about the “ManEnough?” Program please contact Joe McGuire at jmcguire@calgarycasa.com.
