The Numata Lectures in Buddhist Studies and the Department of Classics and Religion Present: Prof. Wendy Swartz (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 18, 2014 - September 18, 2014

Prof. Wendy Swartz Associate Professor of Chinese Literature, Rutgers University Author of Reading Tao Yuanming: Shifting Paradigms of Historical Reception (427-1900) A Poet’s Repertoire in Early Medieval China Though Sun Chuo 孫綽 (314-371) is little-known today, he was considered to be the best poet of his era. He was one of the masters of xuan 玄 (abstruse) -style poetry, which drew extensively from Buddhist and Lao-Zhuang thought. Within this milieu, we see increasing interconnectedness not only among different intellectual repertoires (e.g. Confucian, Lao-Zhuang, and Buddhist) but also different branches of learning (e.g. philosophy and poetry). In her talk, Prof. Swartz demonstrates how Sun Chuo made use of diverse, heterogeneous sources and adapted them to his needs. She engages in a study of medieval Chinese intertextuality by examining how Sun Chuo’s writings function as part of a network of textual relations, and are thus not reducible to attributions of influence, or mere tracing of sources. Her work has special significance and ramifications for early medieval Chinese literary history in light of the fluid boundaries of textual traditions and the dynamic interactions among expanding repertoires of literary and cultural meanings.

Mountain Living: Frozen Artifacts and Alpine Archaeology in the Mackenzie Mountains of NWT (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 17, 2014 - September 17, 2014

Recently discovered ice patch artifacts from Yukon and NWT have revealed a wealth of unique information about prehistoric hunting in high altitude areas. My PhD dissertation examines the broader context of alpine adaptations through excavations at mountain lakes and rivers in the vicinity of ice patch artifact locales. Results from three summers of excavations reveal that ice patch hunting could be a high-risk and labour intensive task but measures were taken to buffer potential failures. Philosophy Speakers: Stephen Darwall (Yale), "Taking Account of Character" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 12, 2014 - September 12, 2014

The Philosophy Speakers Program presents STEPHEN DARWALL, "Taking Account of Character" Location: Social Sciences Building, Room 1253 About the Talk Philosophers often distinguish between responsibility as attributability and responsibility as accountability. The former involves attributing an agent's action to some motivational feature of her character as a reflection of her virtue or vice. Such attributions are thus aretaic. Holding someone accountable, on the one hand, has a distinctive connection to the deontic, to moral obligations or requirements with which we are accountable for complying. I begin by developing these differences and showing how they can explain some otherwise puzzling empirical findings n our attribution of intention (the so-called "Knobe effect"). Then I argue that there are nonetheless ways in which we are nonetheless ways in which we are accountable for aspects of our character. About the Speaker Stephen Darwall is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Yale University and John Dewey Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan. He specializes in moral and political philosophy and the history of ethics. A leading thinker in the foundation of ethics and the history of moral philosophy, he is the author of The British Moralists and the Internal 'Ought': 1640-1740, which cemented his position as the world's foremost authority on the British moral philosophers, and a textbook, Philosophical Ethics, which is widely used throughout the world. His most recent books include The Second-Person Standpoint: Morality, Respect, and Accountability (Harvard 2006); Morality, Authority and Law: Essays in Second Personal Ethics I (Oxford 2013); and Honor, History, and Relationship: Essays in Second-Personal Ethics II (Oxford 2014). An associate editor of Ethics and a founding co-editor of Philosophers' Imprint, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Past President of the American Philosophical Association, Central Division, and has held the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship on four occasions. CBC named Williams one of ten Canadian writers to watch. To book a manuscript consultation with Ian, click here. Packing for a One-way Trip to Mars (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 10, 2014 - September 10, 2014

If a one-way trip to Mars seems like a bleak idea, why are so many people keen to sign up? This lively discussion will include three speakers who know about the journey and what it takes to get to Mars: - Simon Engler, robotics engineer and PhD candidate, University of Hawaii - Zac Trolley, a Calgarian short-listed for a one-way trip to Mars - Mark Stevenson, advisory board member on Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Earth Challenge The presentations will lend to somewhat controversial discussions about space travel, the possibility of populating Mars, and the future of humans in space. This speaking engagement falls during Beakerhead - a creative initiative that advances the understanding of science and engineering as part of everyday life - through art and culture. The university is a community sponsor of Beakerhead in 2014.

Touch, Taste, Smell, and Transformation in Contemporary Canadian and Japanese Fiction (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 9, 2014 - September 9, 2014

Minority writings in Canada since the turn of the 21st century have become more experimental, diverse, and "performative" in an attempt to go beyond autobiographical stories of victimization that would once again be "consumed" by the dominant discourse. Stories are no longer written in a realistic autobiographical mode but explored using diverse forms, themes, and modes. Among such works, Larissa Lai's Salt Fish Girl and Hiromi Goto's Kappa Child use the theme of transformation derived from ancient myth and folklore, and language expressed through the body, in particular, of the human senses of smell and taste. Interestingly, similar themes and modes are conspicuous in works by contemporary Japanese writers like Yoko Tawada's The Bridegroom Was a Dog and Hiromi Kawakami's Tread on a Snake. Despite the difference in sociopolitical environment, transformation in these texts effectively depicts characters who defy simple labeling or categorization defined by the social norm and opens up new ways of probing female agency and sexuality. At the same time, a comparative study will elucidate interesting differences in political concerns and sociocultural specificity found in their respective regions. Salt Fish Girl and The Bridegroom Was a Dog will be specifically examined in the talk. Yukiko Toda teaches English literature at Sugiyama Jogakuen University in Nagoya, Japan. Her research interests include contemporary fiction, African American literature, and Asian Canadian literature. She also works on literary translation.

Adrian Currie - "Marsupial Lions and Methodological Omnivory: Function and Success in Paleobiology" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 3, 2014 - September 3, 2014

About the Talk Historical scientists frequently face incomplete data, and lack direct experimental access to their targets. This has led some philosophers and scientists to be pessimistic about the epistemic potential of the historical sciences. And yet, historical scientists often produce plausible, sophisticated hypotheses. I explain this capacity to generate knowledge in the face of apparent evidential scarcity by examining recent work on Thylacoleo carnifex, the 'marsupial lion'. Here, we see two important features. First, historical scientists are methodological omnivores, that is, they construct purpose-built epistemic tools tailored to test highly localized hypotheses. This allows them to generate many streams of independent evidence and thus maximize their epistemic reach. Second, investigative scaffolding: research proceeds in a piece-meal fashion, information only gaining evidential relevance once certain hypotheses are well supported. This means that we systematically underestimate the amount of evidence ultimately available about the past. These two factors are part of the explanation of the success of historical science and undermine pessimism. I illustrate scaffolding in a discussion of the nature of functional ascription in paleobiology. Frequently, different senses of 'function' are not discriminated during paleobiological contexts--something which has marred many adaptationist investigations of extant organisms. However, I argue that, due to scaffolding, in some contexts conflating senses of 'function' is the right thing to do, as coarse-grained functional hypotheses are required before it is clear what evidence could discriminate between more fine-grained ones. About the Speaker Adrian Currie joined the Philosophy Department in July as one of the University of Calgary's Eyes High Postdoctoral Fellows. He completed his PhD last winter at Australian National University with a dissertation entitled "Explanation and Evidence in Historical Science" (supervised by Kim Sterelny). His current research focuses on 'paleoepistemology': how historical scientists (palaeontologists, geologists, archaeologists, and so on) generate knowledge about the deep past, although he also dabbles in environmental philosophy, the philosophy of biology and issues of philosophical methodology. According to Adrian, he is keener to discuss metaphysics than you would expect.

Milky Way Nights August (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: August 28, 2014 - August 31, 2014

For three moonless nights in August the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is open to the public for late night observing. Drop in for a chance to observe alongside our research scientists. If conditions are clear then we will view distant planetary nebula, globular clusters and galaxies. We will have several telescopes operating and many opportunities to view the night sky as well as several astronomers on hand to answer your questions. Milky Way Nights are a special event that focuses on the public coming to the observatory to look through a telescope and learn more about the night sky. There is no formal lecture; however we will do our best to point out the highlights of the summer sky. No need to pre-register. The event is out of doors, so please dress for the weather. You can bring a flashlight and do not forget bug spray. If the sky is cloudy then we will not be able to operate the telescopes. If very poor weather conditions persist then the observing event is cancelled. Watch the RAO website for sky conditions and updates. Entrance fee: Donation to the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory

Tenth Annual Student Legal Assistance (SLA) Charity Golf Tournament (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: July 24, 2014 - July 24, 2014

On Thursday, July 24, 2014, we are hosting our Tenth Annual Charity Golf Tournament and Fundraiser to benefit Student Legal Assistance (SLA). Student Legal Assistance is a registered charity through which law students at the University of Calgary volunteer their time to act as pro-bono agents for people in the Calgary area who are financially unable to hire a lawyer. Without this free service many disadvantaged people would be without legal representation in the Civil, Family, Traffic, and Criminal Divisions of the Provincial Court of Alberta. We have invited the legal and business communities of Calgary to join us for a fun day of golf at the Sirocco Golf Course in recognition of the invaluable role SLA plays in the Calgary community. All proceeds raised will go directly to SLA’s operating budget. We hope you are interested in supporting this event.
