Philosophy Speakers: John Baker, "Towards an Account of Weight of Reasons for Acting" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 30, 2015 - January 30, 2015

The Philosophy Speakers Program presents JOHN BAKER (UCalgary), "Towards an Account of Weight of Reasons for Acting" About the Talk There are (common) situations where there are reasons to do some action but also reasons not to do it--in some cases because there are reasons to do something different. In some cases there is no way to resolve this dilemma and we don’t know what we ought to do. In other cases we can conclude that one set of reasons has greater weight than the other and that solves the problem of what we ought to do. Since 1963 there has been an enormous amount of useful work on what it is to have a reason (and even on what it is for there to be a reason) to do some action. But, until the publication of Mark Schroeder’s Slaves of the Passions in 2007, little or no work had been done on what it is for one reasons to have greater weight that another. Instead one school of philosophers have assumed that weights of reasons will track variations in affective or conative states of the agent. More usually philosophers have found ways either to ignore or to evade the issue, instead focusing their attention elsewhere (most notably on the task of spelling out the conditions under which a fact or putative fact can serve as a reason). There are strong arguments against the suggestion that weights of reasons track the affective and conative states of the agent and it is obvious that ignoring or evading the issue is an unsatisfactory approach. In this paper I will attempt to build on Schroeder’s pioneering study of the issue. About the Speaker John Baker is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calgary with research interests in Bioethics, Business Ethics, Ethics, Metaethics, Philosophy of Mind and Philosophical Psychology, and Plato and Aristotle. His professional work includes service as an ex officio member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Association of University Teachers. His chapter"Hard End of Life Decisions for Physicians and Family Members" appeared in The Price of Compassion: Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia in Canada and the United States (Broadview, 2010).

When Art and Architecture Were One: Ron Thom and the Allied Arts (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 28, 2015 - January 28, 2015

Join EVDS in welcoming Adele to campus for her compelling exploration of the unique style of one of Canada's great architects, in When Art and Architecture Were One: Ron Thom and the Allied Arts. Speaker: Adele Weder is a Vancouver-based writer and curator. A long-standing architectural writer for many Canadian and international periodicals, she is also the co-author of monographs of B.C. Binning, Selwyn Pullan and Dan Hanganu. Her curatorial work includes the west coast iteration of Beatriz Colomina’s Clip-Stamp-Fold exhibition, several installations at the Maison d’architecture in Montreal, and the nationally travelling exhibition “Ron Thom and the Allied Arts”, currently at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton and opening the Nickle Galleries in Calgary in June of this year. From his west coast beginnings to his career peak in Toronto, architect Ron Thom (1923-86) helped define Canada’s 20th century architectural identity. But he was trained in Vancouver as an artist, not an architect; and this foundation distinguished his work from the stark International Style in vogue during his time. From the B.C. Electric Building to Trent University, his west-coast beginnings and artistic perspective helped him create some of the most dramatic and yet poetically intimate landmarks in Canadian architecture. Date: Wednesday, January 28 Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm Location: Room 2165, Professional Faculties Building, University of Calgary Main Campus This lecture is free. Public welcome.

Language Research Centre Speaker Series presents Justine Huet (MRU) (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 28, 2015 - January 28, 2015

Language Research Centre Speaker Series: Please join us on January 28 for the next talk in our speaker series “Language of Literature.” Justine Huet (Mount Royal University) will give a talk entitled “"Bloody shitcakes!" Chavs are overtaking Québécois schools. The Québécois dubbing of Bromwell High” ”. Please see the LRC website (http://arts.ucalgary.ca/lrc/) for the abstract. “Bloody shitcakes!” Chavs are coming to Québec. The Québécois dubbing of Bromwell High Featuring the unconventional school life of three teenage girls attending a badly managed middle-school in South London, Bromwell High(2005) is known in Québec as Polyvalente Baptiste Huard. The TV series pokes fun at disabilities and throws in some innuendos, racial and homophobic slurs for good measure. But Bromwell High is first and foremost a scathing critique of the British school system. Its teachers act more like “chavs” than qualified and caring pedagogues. Two questions then arise when dubbing Bromwell High in Québécois: how do you negotiate its coarse language and sordid backstories? How can you dub a series that seems deeply entrenched in British culture, namely through culture-specific references and the use of a cockney accent?

TEDxUniversityofCalgary (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 24, 2015 - January 24, 2015

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxUniversityofCalgary, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxUniversityofCalgary event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The theme for this event is "Blueprint". A blueprint is a guide for making something, a design or pattern that can be followed. A blueprint is also a map, a guide, a plan. A person can have a “blueprint for success”, or a blueprint that guides his/her life rooted in a particular religion or philosophy. There are “genetic blueprints”, recipes for making living things. Blueprints guide us through unfamiliar terrain, help TV characters in devising an escape plan from prison, but blueprints may also be outdated and lead us astray. They can be restricting, confusing, difficult to decipher. With so many ways to interpret a blueprint, we challenge our speakers to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. Admission to this event is FREE. If you are interested please visit our website at: http://tedxuniversityofcalgary.com/ and register online. Spaces are limited!

Residential Tenants’ Rights – Public Lecture (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 24, 2015 - January 24, 2015

The Faculty of Law and the Canadian Institute of Resources Law invite you to attend a free public lecture on Residential Tenants' Rights. Alberta’s Residential Tenancies Act has never been particularly friendly to renters. Unlike other provinces, there are no limits on how much a landlord can raise the rent and no requirement that pets be accommodated in our Act, and the process for getting a landlord to comply with minimum housing standards is complicated and time-consuming. Forcing landlords to provide decent housing and to comply with the existing laws has recently become more difficult due to Calgary’s low vacancy rate. This session looks at the rights the Residential Tenancies Act does give tenants for poor housing conditions, unreturned security deposits, rent increases, and other concerns and at how tenants can enforce those rights. This event is sponsored by the Alberta Law Foundation. Jonnette Watson Hamilton, Professor of Law, University of Calgary, will be the lecturer. Philosophy Speakers: Migotti & Wyatt, "Yet More Philosophy of Sex" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 23, 2015 - January 23, 2015

The Philosophy Speakers Program presents MARK MIGOTTI & NICOLE WYATT (UCalgary), "Yet More Philosophy of Sex" About the Talk The philosophy of sex we aim for here is a philosophy of having sex; an explanatory account of what it is to have sex. Somewhat surprisingly, the very idea of such an undertaking has been attacked from all sides. Alan Soble, for example, argues that the ordinary practice of identifying some sexual acts as ‘having sex’ is simply a mistake. Marilyn Frye also places little importance on having sex, though for quite different reasons—on her surprising analysis having sex turns out to be something only men can do. By contrast with both Soble and Frye, John Finnis takes the important line to be that between marital intercourse, something only possible for married heterosexual couples who approach sexual activity with the right religious attitude, and fornication. Is the concept of having sex simply arbitrary and thus philosophically barren? We defend having sex against this diverse group of critics by offering an account of the concept and showing its philosophical usefulness. About the Speakers Mark Migotti is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calgary with research interests focusing on 19th Century German Philosophy, Ancient Philosophy, Classical American Pragmatism, Epistemology, Ethics, and Philosophy of History. He is author of Ethics and the Life of the Mind: Nietzsche's Critique of Modern Morality (2009) Nicole Wyatt is an Assistant Professor and Department Head of Philosophy at the University of Calgary. Her research interests are in Medieval Philosophy, Philosophical Linguistics, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Logic, and Philosophy of Sex and Love. Her latest publication is "Failing to do Things with Words", Southwest Philosophy Review 25 (2009): 135-42.

In 2013 a partnership project involving Parkinson Alberta, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and Dance at the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary brought together people with Parkinson disease, their spouses, friends or care partners, and professional dancers and an accompanist for weekly dance class. The project grew into a multidisciplinary research study supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Rozsa Foundation. Part of the study asked questions about whether dancing contributes to quality of life. “I Always Look Forward to Tuesdays” is a performance of the research project and the larger story of this community dance project. Performers include program participants (the oldest is 90), the dance teachers, neuroscientist Dr. Afra Faroud, and jazz musician Sheldon Zandboer. Video artist Noel Begin is a collaborator. Admission is free.

Calgary Institute for the Humanities Presents: Christian Bök, The Unkillable Poet *The Xenotext So Far* (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 21, 2015 - January 21, 2015

Christian Bök is the author of Eunoia (Coach House Books, 2001)—a bestselling work of experimental literature, which has gone on to win the Griffin Poetry Prize. Bök is one of the earliest founders of Conceptual Literature (the poetic school of avant-garde writing made famous, in part, by the performance of its ringleader, Kenneth Goldsmith, at the White House in 2011). Bök has created artificial languages for two television shows: Gene Roddenberry’s Earth: Final Conflict and Peter Benchley’s Amazon. Bök has earned many accolades for his virtuoso recitals of “sound-poems” (particularly Die Ursonate by Kurt Schwitters)—and he has performed lectures and readings at more than 200 venues around the world in the last four years. Bök is on the verge of finishing his current project, entitled The Xenotext—a work that requires him to engineer the genome of an unkillable bacterium so that the DNA of such an organism might become not only a durable archive that stores a poem for eternity, but also an operant machine that writes a poem in response. Bök teaches in the Department of English at the University of Calgary. This event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

Creating Resiliency through Awareness and Preparation - a Long Term Conservation Strategy for Protected Community Historic Resources in Medicine Hat, Alberta (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 21, 2015 - January 21, 2015

Flood waters penetrated both Medalta Potteries National Historic Site and The Medicine Hat Brick and Tile Co. Provincial Historic Resource, in June 2013, creating awareness that the historic and archaeological resources inside these sites are susceptible to deterioration or complete loss when exposed to unforeseen disaster. The flood that impacted Southern Alberta was the most expensive flood in Alberta’s history. In addition to the tens of thousands of people displaced during this flood event, there were many heritage resources damaged by flood waters. I returned to the Historic Clay District of Medicine Hat to assess the damage of heritage resources affected by flooding, monitor decontamination, establish methods to stabilize remains and prepare a conservation strategy for the long term conservation of these resources. This talk will reveal how heritage resources at Medalta Potteries and the Medicine Hat Brick and Tile Co. were impacted, what steps were taken to prepare, recover, and stabilize damaged heritage resources at these sites. Historic kiln structures require specific procedures aimed at preparing resources when disaster is imminent. The lessons learned since 2013 have revealed that resiliency lies in awareness, community collaboration minimizes risk, and an emergency management plan reduces the damage to or loss of heritage resources. ‘Publication by Press Release: The Macedonian Tomb at Amphipolis’ (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 16, 2015 - January 16, 2015

This free talk by Jolene McLeod (Department of Classics and Religion) will discuss the recent archaeological finds at Amphipolis in Northern Greece, which include a tumulus burial mound 500 meters in diameter and a multi-chambered tomb. This has been touted as the largest and most important tomb ever excavated in Greece. However, all information about this site has been revealed through press releases and media reports rather than scholarly publications. This approach has been criticized as being both overtly political and unscholarly, as information about the find that is presented in the press one week is then hastily altered the next. The talk will examine the relationship between scholarship and the media, while presenting an overview of the Amphipolis tomb finds so far, and addressing the most compelling question: who is buried there?
