Kraut, Machines and Eternal Grooves (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 20, 2015 - March 20, 2015

The LLC Speaker Series proudly presents … Kraut, Machines and Eternal Grooves: The Cultural Importance of German Popular Music in the 1970’s After World War Two, the cultural development in Germany was tightly connected to the political situation. The occupation of Western Germany by American and British troops as well as the historical situation made it difficult for young German artists to find their own voice, especially concerning the emerging Anglophone popular culture. On the one hand, the triumph of Rock Music since the late 1950s had a deep impact on the West German youth; still German popular music connected to Rock’n’Roll was a mere imitation of American and British role models. On the other hand, especially where Angloamerican popular culture started to ‘infiltrate’ literature (which was still considered ‘high art’) the rejection by the cultural elites was overwhelming. Between these two poles – the acceptance of (and love for) popular culture within the German youth and the urge to move away from Anglophone role models and create something radically new (which at the same time could be seen as a examination of recent history) – a new musical/cultural movement emerged. It fulfilled its cultural promise as it remained in a state of being an underground movement always on the verge of moving into the mainstream – but never really arriving there. The phenomenon that came to be known as Krautrock can be seen as a perfect example for the interplay of popular culture, ‘high’ art and politics as well as the ongoing struggle which has determined the reception of popular culture since the 1960’s: The narrow line between underground and mainstream and the perpetual movement that links the two.

Philosophy Speakers: Alfred Mele (Florida State), "On Some Unsuccessful Control-featuring Arguments Against Event-Causal Libertarianism" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 20, 2015 - March 20, 2015

The Philosophy Speakers Program presents Alfred Mele (Florida State), "On Some Unsuccessful Control-featuring Arguments Against Event-Causal Libertarianism" About the Talk Libertarianism about free will is the thesis that free will is incompatible with determinism and there are free actions (exercises of free will). Event-causal libertarianism appeals to ordinary indeterministic causation of decisions and other actions and states and steers clear of agent causation. This talk is a critique of a trio of control-featuring arguments against event-causal libertarianism. One features the claim that “the active control that is exercised on [an event-causal libertarian] view is just the same as that exercised on an event-causal compatibilist account” (Clarke 2003, p.220). Another hinges on the assertion that event-causal libertarianism “does not provide agents with any more control than compatibilism does” (Pereboom 2001, p.56). And a third is Derk Pereboom’s “disappearing agent objection” (2014). Morals are drawn. About the Speaker Al Mele is the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University where he is also the Director of the Philosophy and Science of Self-Control Project and Director of the Big Questions in Free Will Project. His primary research interests revolve around human behavior. His major publications include: Irrationality (1987); Springs of Action (1992); Autonomous Agents (1995); Self-Deception Unmasked (2001); Motivation and Agency (2003); Free Will and Luck (2006); Effective Intentions: The Power of Conscious Will (2009 and winner of the APA’s 2013 Sanders Book Prize); Backsliding: Understanding Weakness of Will (2012); A Dialogue on Free Will and Science (2014); and Free: Why Science Hasn’t Disproved Free Will (2014). An edited volume Surrounding Free Will will appear from Oxford University Press in 2015.

Is Co-op & Internship Right for you? National Co-op Week Begins! (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 16, 2015 - March 20, 2015

Stampeders’ player Jon Cornish will be kicking off the 2015 Co-op and Internship Week. Beginning on March 16th and going until March 20th, Co-op and Internship week will feature information panels and networking events meant to enhance student experience. The goal of this weeklong event is to increase student awareness on the benefits of internships and co-op programs, and to invite students to apply to the Co-op and Internship programs by the May 1st. Students are encouraged to kick off their career goals on March 18th, beginning at 12:00pm in the TFDL Gallery Hall. Jon Cornish’s keynote speech will be followed by an accomplished student speaker panel, who will share their experiences in co-op & internship. This panel will be followed by some brief Q & A, and networking opportunities with the event ending at 1:30. All students interested in the co-op and internship experience are invited to get the inside scoop on the employer perspective. Occurring on March 19th, from 5:00pm to 6:30pm in the TFDL Gallery Hall, a range of experts will discuss the mutual benefits for both students and employers interested in the program. Following the employer panel, experienced Co-op & Internship students will be available to answer your questions. Co-op programs and internships provide students with the unique experience of hands-on learning. Many Foley, Co-op Coordinator for the Faculty of Arts describes the program, “Arts Co-op students are amazed at the level of work and the responsibilities they are given on a work term. Their work experiences clarify their career and academic goals and provide them with confidence in their abilities to achieve these goals.” Noorie Jadavji, Co-operative Education and Internship Coordinator for the Faculty of Science, also believes the upcoming Career Services event will be a very beneficial week for UCalgary students. She says, “The co-op and internship programs are a win-win for students and employers. It allows both to test the waters. For the students, they get paid while they build their experience, and for the employers, they get to see if the student is a good fit in terms of skills, interests, and team dynamics. In almost all cases, the experience is highly positive and a high percentage of students go on to receive full-time and permanent offers from the employers.” To secure a seat in any of the upcoming Co-op and Internship week events login to CareerLink and check out the CS Events Calendar. To learn more about the upcoming events check out Career Services on Facebook or Twitter, or drop by the office located in the MacEwan Student Centre room number 188.

This is the first graduate program in landscape architecture in Canada to be launched since 1980, and is situated in the geographically and culturally dynamic context of Alberta and Western Canada. Our MLA is intended as a program for the 21st century - to be leaders and to train leaders in becoming catalysts for positive local and global change. The MLA is a three-year course-based program consisting of a foundation year plus two years at the Master's level, and we will be seeking accreditation through the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA). Holocaust Commemoration and Cultural Mobility (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 6, 2015 - March 6, 2015

Holocaust Commemoration and Cultural Mobility: Arnold Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw in Postwar Europe Schoenberg’s brief Holocaust cantata (1947) seemed calculated to irritate every exposed nerve of postwar Europe: a twelve-tone piece in three languages about the Holocaust, it was written for an American audience by a newly naturalized American citizen, a Jewish composer whose oeuvre had been the Nazis’ prime exemplar of degenerate music. This talk focuses on Schoenberg’s distinctive representation of the Holocaust and the various meanings that accrued to the piece as it circulated through Europe during the early Cold War.

Poetry and Music in Early Modern Naples: Cross-cultural Tapestries (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 6, 2015 - March 6, 2015

The history of early modern Naples is in part shaped by over two century of Spanish hegemony. The city thus experienced extraordinary cross-cultural and socio-political intersections. Renaissance humanists such as Giovanni Pontano, the founder of the Academia Pontoniana in Naples looked to ancient ideas of cosmic harmony to inspire morals, justice and civic responsibility. As in ancient Greece, Apollo’s lyre was thought to produce music that created harmony in the universe. Humanists considered the work of Petrarch who reconnected with the ancient past to rebuild crumbling human values. A pleiade of sixteenth century Neapolitan and Hispanic petrarchists, men and women, made Naples the ideal place for the exercise of lyric poetry. They were poets, and often musicians, who declaimed their own verses evoking Orpheus’s cantare ad lyram, a practice upheld by Ficino and Poliziano a few years earlier. In the course of this presentation, from an interdisciplinary perspective, we will examine poetry by Petrarch, Juan Boscàn, Garcilaso de la Vega, Luigi Tansillo and Bernardo Tasso and their musical settings to reflect how these works illuminate the culture of the poet’s historical contexts. Indeed, poetry and music in early modern Naples emerges as a site of intercultural discourses. This event is free and open to the public. Presented by MARCS: The Medieval and Renaissance Cultural Studies Research Group.

Philosophy Speakers: Samantha Brennan (Western), "The Intrinsic Goods of Childhood: Trust, Time, and Play? (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 6, 2015 - March 6, 2015

About the Talk I begin my examination of the goods of children by thinking first about children as rights bearers. If children have rights and those rights protect their welfare, then we need to know in what children’s welfare consists. On a predominant view of welfare – so mainstream as to pass by unnoticed – only the welfare of adults counts and we measure childhood goods by their contribution to adult life. For example, health care decisions for children are often justified on the basis of future health and well-being, discounting rather heavily impact on current well-being. As well, policies around education and school curriculum focus on producing competent adult workers and citizens often ignoring child-hood. Discussions of corporal punishment and its justification often ask, “But does it work?” focusing entirely on outcomes setting aside its effects on childhood well-being. But what if there are goods the value of which doesn’t follow from their contribution to the goods of adult life? Then these lines of justification and argument will be missing out on a morally significant factor. In many cases the results may be the same, but getting the reasons right matters. Good childhoods will produce good adults but as the examples I’ve given just show it does make a practical difference that we get it right. For example, we need to know the relative weight of instrumental goods and intrinsic goods. Consider the tough question of providing for our children sufficient opportunities to experience some bads, failure, for example, in order to produce resilient competent goods. Are any of the intrinsic goods of childhood uniquely available to children? I suggest that play, trust, and time might be such goods. And here I consider these three goods as unique childhood goods. A final section of the pa-per considers three objections: First, that these goods aren’t unique to childhood. Second, that they are only instrumentally good. And third, that they are not necessarily good at all. About the Speaker Samantha Brennan is Professor of Philosophy and a past Chair in the Department of Philosophy at Western University in London, Ontario. She is also a member of the Rotman Institute of Philosophy, an affiliate member of the Department of Women's Studies and Feminist Research, and a member of the graduate faculty of the Department of Political Science. Brennan's main research interests lie in the area of contemporary normative ethics, particularly at the intersection of deontological and consequentialist moral theories. She also has active research interests in feminist ethics and is a co-editor of Feminist Philosophy Quarterly. She is currently at work on a book with Sarah Hannan and Richard Vernon for Oxford University Press entitled, Permissible Progeny? Moral Considerations and Procreative Choice.

Distinguished Lecture in Economics: Using Field Experiments to Make the World a Better Place (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 6, 2015 - March 6, 2015

Join us for the 7th Distinguished Lecture in Economics: "Using Field Experiments to Make the World a Better Place." Each year the Department of Economics invites a top economist to Calgary to lecture on an important public policy issue. This year's lecturer John A. List is one of the world's leading experts on experimental economics. In his lecture, Professor List will showcase some of his recent field experiments that shed insights on why women earn less money than men, why inner city schools continue to fail, why people discriminate, and how we can use field experiments to make the world a better place. His experiences range from conducting large-scale governmental field experiments in the UK and the US to experiments on Craigslist that are essentially free.

Location:

MacEwan Ballroom

Speaker:

John A. List, Universty of Chicago, has pioneered work using field experiments in which he developed scientific methods for testing economic theory directly in the marketplace. His work has provided insight on such issues as pricing behavior, market structure, the valuation of nonmarketed goods and services, the impact of environmental regulation, the economics of charitable giving, and the impact of incentives on education and weight loss.

In this talk, Dr. Bridel will present a brief overview of the academic research and discuss how he has attempted and continues to use his own work and the work of others to encourage more inclusivity in sport in the Canadian context. Dr. Bridel will also touch on his experiences and challenges in doing such work.

Colony collapse disorder: A translation of the Georgics (Book IV)’ by Virgil (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 4, 2015 - March 4, 2015

Christian Bök (University of Calgary) continues the Language of Literature series by speaking on “Colony collapse disorder: A translation of the Georgics (Book IV)’ by Virgil.” Colony Collapse Disorder is a long, dark poem that translates Book IV of The Georgics by Virgil—(a “pastoral nocturne,” which provides Virgil a pretense for retelling the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice). Virgil addresses his patron, the Roman general, Gaius Maecenas, offering him advice about beekeeping, only to digress by retelling the story of Aristaeus, a shepherd, who must undergo a quest to recuperate his empty hives, saving his lost bees, all destroyed, as punishment, for him having caused the death of Eurydice. Virgil retells the story of the poet Orpheus, who sets off to rescue his lover Eurydice from Hell, but in a crisis of faith, fails to bring her back; likewise, Virgil retells the story of Aristaeus who sets off to rescue his bees from Hell, expiating a sin through rituals of sacrifice. Given that Virgil portrays the bees, as kind of army in the poem, I cannot help interpret his manual about beekeeping as a kind of allegory about the expiations required of a general who sends his troops to Hell, but finds himself unable to bring them home. Book IV of The Georgics also takes on special meaning for a modern reader in an era, when the bees are threatened with extinction. Like Aristaeus, we have condemned our hives to Hell, all the while remaining uncertain about whether or not we can even bring them back—and if we cannot rescue the bees, then we may, be damning humanity itself to Hell, doing so at the very time, when there may not exist enough animals to sacrifice so as to appease our angered deities, before we ourselves disappear from the planet.

The Thirty Two Piano Sonatas of Beethoven (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 28, 2015 - February 28, 2015

The Mountain View Connection embarks on a new project this February, The 32 Piano Sonatas of Beethoven, performed by pianist Charles Foreman. Beginning February 28th, these nine concerts will run until May 28, 2016. All concerts will take place at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8 Street SW, Calgary). There are many series, suites and cycles of pieces which can be considered “up there” in the pianist’s standard repertoire, but none can quite come close to Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas. “I am a believer in giving gifts,” says Kathleen van Mourik, the Artistic Co-Director of the Mountain View Connection. “And I am convinced that Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas are a gift many of us have never had the experience of sharing, hearing live, or performing.” Performances of the complete Beethoven sonatas are very rare – few pianists have the time or the inclination to tackle such a monumental journey. Ten years ago Charles Foreman performed his – and Calgary’s - first cycle to sold-out houses and standing ovations. “Ten years between Beethoven piano sonata cycles is too long,” says van Mourik. “And this cycle also serves to fulfill another purpose. It is a chance for both of us, Charles and myself, as Artistic Directors of Mountain View, to give back to our audience.” This cycle is also a fundraiser for Mountain View Connection’s other musical projects that support emerging musicians. All the funds raised from these nine concerts will go directly towards their projects to showcase talented young musicians in concerts, masterclasses, and recitals. The first programme, on February 28th, includes Beethoven’s first published piano sonata, Op. 2, No. 1 in F minor, as well as the famous “Pastoral” Sonata, No. 15 in D major, Op. 28, the fascinating and rarely-played Sonata No. 22 in F major, Op 54, and one of the greatest and most influential of Beethoven’s sonatas, the 28th one in the cycle, Op. 101 in A major. Single tickets are $30 (adults) / $20 (students/seniors) / FREE (children 12 and under). A pass to all nine concerts is also available for $200 (adults) / $130 (students/seniors) and a “1/3 Pass” – which can be used for any three concerts – is available for $75 (adults) / $50 (students/seniors). Art Exhibition: Terroir and Batton (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 23, 2015 - February 27, 2015

Opening reception: February 23, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Terroir and Baton is a collection of woodblock prints, relief and projected sequences that make reference to esoteric traditions that study natural phenomena as a key to harnessing nature’s power. ‘Terroir’ a technique for searching underground water, minerals, ley lines, or anything invisible, by observing the motion of a stick or the changes in direction of a pendulum. ’Baton’ a type of weapon. Susannah Stark is a Scottish artist currently studying Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Her work is an ongoing exploration into printmaking and its potential as a philosophical praxis. Stark is interested in the parallels between traditional and digital technique and continues to explore the ‘glitch’ as a generative movement for understanding spiritual experiences in the contemporary world.

Location:

The Little Gallery - Art Building

Speaker:

Susannah Stark, exchange student from the Royal College of Art

Sigma Xi Seminar: Obese yeast: a model for lipid-associated pathologies (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 19, 2015 - February 19, 2015

Sigma Xi Seminar presented by Dr. Vanina Zaremberg, Dept. Biological Sciences, University of Calgary, in Room 211 Biological Sciences (BI211) Although baker’s yeast is most popular for its role in making the beer and bread that contribute to the “obesity epidemic” in our society, it can also help us understand how our cells manage excess fat. What do yeast and human cells have in common? More than you realize... the ability to channel excess fat into neutral lipids like triacylglycerol is a critical strategy used by all eukaryotic cells to maintain lipid homeostasis. In this seminar I will discuss the use of yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as a powerful model organism to understand fundamental cellular processes conserved in all eukaryotes. We will revisit key features of lipid metabolic pathways and discuss the use of “obese” yeast as a model to study the molecular mechanisms associated with cellular fat storage and its regulation. Seminar Sponsored by Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society - Members and Non-members welcome.

Man Equals Man (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 17, 2015 - February 17, 2015

Set in British Colonial India, Man Equals Man presents the forcible transformation of a civilian, Galy Gay, into the perfect soldier. Using Kiplingesque imagery, Brecht explores identity as something that can be dismantled and reassembled like a machine in a parable that the critic Walter Kerr credited with a “curious foreshadowing of the art of brainwashing.” Event Link: http://scpa.ucalgary.ca/events/man-equals-man
