Category: Other EventDates: December 8, 2014 - December 23, 2014
“One must have a mind of winter To regard the frost and the boughs Of the pine-trees crusted with snow” from “The Snow Man” by Wallace Stevens We have a new exhibit up today in the reception area of the Centre for Arts and Culture, TFDL 520. This display will be available for viewing until December 23, 2014. This selection of materials from Archives and Special Collections explores texts and images connected to our experience of snow and winter. Inspired by Adam Gopnik’s 2011 Massey Lectures Winter: Five Windows on the Season, we present books, documents, original drawings, and manuscripts that reveal the depth and breadth of winter. Gopnik discusses winter as having five windows: Romantic, Radical, Recuperative, Recreational and Remembering. What is winter for you: a climate, a delight, curse, or a state of mind? Items selected by Alexis Poeschek, Allison Wagner and Annie Murray.

Phonetic Effects on the Development of Phonological Categories: A Case Study (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: December 5, 2014 - December 5, 2014
This talk will address issues in child language phonology from the perspective of Quantal Feature Theory (Stevens 1972; Stevens & Kaiser 2010). This approach to phonological feature incorporates articulatory and acoustic parameters of speech, whose inter-relations account for both variability within discrete categories as well as boundaries between these categories. From a developmental perspective, this approach also predicts that the learner may miss out, at least temporarily, on either of these dimensions. I provide evidence for this prediction through longitudinal data from Inês, a learner of European Portuguese.

Filiality in the Aftermath of the Cultural Revolution (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: December 2, 2014 - December 2, 2014
This talk addresses how the battered notion of Confucian filiality (孝 xiao) as one of the fundamental building blocks of traditional Chinese philosophical discourse and social practice has survived through to the contemporary era in Chinese visual representation. Dr. Lupke uses the 2004 Zhang Yang film, Sunflower, as a perfect example of how conditions in contemporary China, with its post-Mao legacy, rampant free market sensibility, inexorable dismantling of traditional domestic architecture, and move toward the nuclear family as the basic social unit, have been catastrophic for the traditional concept of filiality. And yet filiality, as a notion that informs familial bonds and directs ethical behavior and a sense of responsibility, continues to stubbornly assert itself in this uncongealed social formation, and despite the challenges that have beset filiality in the modern era, the concept and practice has not entirely died out, though it has been severely undermined. Filiality continues to weigh on the minds of Chinese intellectuals dedicated to representing the current social milieu in visual, aesthetic forms.

Category: Other EventDates: November 28, 2014 - November 28, 2014
About the Talk Isaac Newton's theorising strategy in the Principia is usually characterised by I. Bernard Cohen's 'Newtonian style': Newton moved from mathematical principles to a physical system in a step-by-step fashion. Modern commentators disagree on two relevant factors of this strategy: (1) the role of data in Newton's construction of a mathematical system, and (2) whether this system was supposed to represent the world. I argue that Michael Weisberg's account of modelling provides a useful way of characterising Newton's strategy which sheds light on these disagreements. Focusing on two features of Weisberg's account - construal and autonomy - I conclude that this characterisation answers several questions about the role of data and problems of representation in the Principia: Newton's mathematical principles are not data-driven, and his representations of the phenomenon is indirect. Remarkably, this characterisation also shows that model-based sciences did not originate with the development of economics, ecology and evolutionary biology in the twentieth century, but played a foundational role in the development of the Newtonian revolution. About the Speaker Kirsten Walsh, a Visiting Scholar in the UofC Department of Philosophy this year, is a PhD Candidate at the University of Otago in New Zealand. Her main research interests are early modern philosophy and the philosophy of science (with an historical bent). Her dissertation (submitted before coming to Calgary) focuses on the scientific methodology of Isaac Newton. Whilst in Calgary, she plans to continue her research world as part of a team studying the emergence of experimental philosophy in the early modern period. Category: Other EventDates: November 21, 2014 - November 21, 2014
Department of Classics & Religion Seminar Series Satyrs and Hephaistos: Bringing Political Outsiders In A lecture by Dr. Allison Surtees, University of Winnipeg The satyr is most commonly associated with Dionysos. However, in Athenian vase-painting the satyr’s connection to Hephaistos goes back just as far as does his connection to Dionysos, and persists just as long. The paper explores the link between the satyr and Hephaistos in the Athenian visual tradition through the lens of Athenian politics and citizen identification. Central to this exploration is the myth of the birth of Erechtheus and the idea of Athenian autochthony, particularly in its much politicized fifth-century incarnation. As Hephaistos is politically drawn away from the margins and into the physical and political centre of Athens, were the painters of Athenian vases attempting to bring the satyrs (and all they represent) into the political centre as well? ____ Allison Surtees earned her Ph.D. in Classics from Johns Hopkins University, specializing in ancient material culture. Her current research focuses on the iconography of the satyr and the politics of marginalized figures, particularly within the Athenian democracy. She has engaged in research at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, the Canadian Institute in Greece, and the Archäologisches Institut in Freiburg. Currently she is Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Winnipeg.

Category: Other EventDates: November 20, 2014 - November 20, 2014
http://www.ispia.ca/node/165With the growth of cloud computing, the security provided by public clouds to their tenants is increasingly being scrutinized, in part because these clouds arrange for mutually distrustful tenants to simultaneously execute tasks on the same hardware. In this talk we explore a long-suspected but, to date, largely hypothetical attack vector in public clouds, namely "side-channel attacks" in which one tenant might learn sensitive information about another tenant simply by running on the same hardware with it, but without violating the logical access control enforced by the cloud's isolation software (hypervisor or operating system). Specifically, we demonstrate the practicality of damaging cross-tenant side-channel attacks on modern hypervisors and operating systems, including some that we have demonstrated on commercial public clouds. We will then describe various approaches we have developed to defend against side-channel attacks in cloud environments, both inexpensive defenses against our specific attacks and more holistic but expensive protections. Prof. Reiter's research interests include all areas of computer and communications security and distributed computing. His present research focuses primarily on security of cloud computing and networks, as well as usable security. Prof. Reiter was named an ACM Fellow in 2008 and an IEEE Fellow in 2014. Category: Other EventDates: November 19, 2014 - November 19, 2014
Archaeological work has begun in advance of the Nicaraguan trans-oceanic canal that will span the 300 km wide Central American country from the Caribbean to the Pacific, challenging the Panama Canal for economic dominance in the hemisphere. Extensive cultural resources will be impacted by the project and associated development in a country that has been relatively ignored by archaeologists since the mid-19th century ... with the exception of a 15 year project by archaeologists from the University of Calgary. This illustrated presentation will address the history and goals of the Nicaraguan canal project, and describe how recent University of Calgary archaeologists have transformed the cultural history of Nicaragua. Past projects have included excavations along the lake shore and on one of the prominent islands in the lake, areas that will be impacted by the canal, while focusing on a period when migrants from central Mexico allegedly conquered and colonized the region in order to monopolize cacao production. Presented by the Archaeological Society of Alberta - Calgary Centre. See arkycalgary.com for more info

Category: Other EventDates: November 17, 2014 - November 17, 2014
Here’s Looking at Yu: Chinese Silences & the Trope of China in Contemporary American Poetry Lucas Klein, (The University of Hong Kong) Ever since Ezra Pound’s Cathay (1915) and his editing of Ernest Fenollosa’s essay on “The Chinese Written Character as a Medium for Poetry,” China has figured large among the tropes of modern and contemporary American poetics. At times this figure has served to highlight certain facts about China and its relevance to American society and poetry (Pound’s “Chinese History” Cantos, Gary Snyder’s Cold Mountain Poems or Mountains and Rivers without End), and at times has served to illustrate the futility of fixing linguistic deixis beyond the self-referential (John Ashbery’s Chinese Whispers or Bob Perelman’s “China,” which gained attention for being featured in Fredric Jameson’s Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism)—and at many times the distinction between the two has been unclear. Yet how has China been configured into the aesthetic, and to what ends, of American poetry today? Asian-American scholar and poet Timothy Yu has been taking on and complicating this question in his ongoing poetic project, 100 Chinese Silences, a series of poems that satirize the way China figures in contemporary American poetry. Starting with parodies of Billy Collins, Yu’s project runs a range of aesthetic, sociological, and poetical implications as it moves on to tackle figures from Snyder to Eliot Weinberger to Jonathan Stalling—writers who are, and whose deployment of China as a trope is, to say the least, different from that of Collins. My lecture will contextualize and offer close readings of Yu’s Chinese Silences and its engagement with the various images of China on display in contemporary poetry from America.

Social Media in the Golden Age of Crisis in the Humanities - A conversation with Nein. Quarterly. (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: November 17, 2014 - November 17, 2014
Eric Jarosinski is an expert on modern German literature, culture, and critical theory, who recently left academia to devote himself to his post as founding editor of Nein. Quarterly, a critically acclaimed compendium of utopian negation. This talk is part of the FailedIntellectual Goodwill Tour 2014-15 Is the Tour a lecture? Nein. Though it may include one upon request. Its negative utopian potential is often best realized as a conversation with a moderator, some visuals, possibly music, and a theme we will work out in advance. Some examples: 1. Theory as Tragedy. Praxis as Farce. — A Conversation with Nein. Quarterly about What Matters. And Why it Doesn't. 2. A Civilization of Discontents. A Conversation with Nein. Quarterly about Social Media in the Golden Age of Crisis in the Humanities. 3. Nothing New. A Conversation With Nein. Quarterly about Critical Theory and Nihilist Praxis. 4. How to Become a #FailedIntellectual. And Why. – A Conversation with Nein. Quarterly about Living the Broken Dream. 5. This is not a pipe. — A Conversation with Nein. Quarterly about the Lost and Found Art of the Aphorism. Is the Tour art? Nein. It is, however, a performance of sorts. An aesthetic and intellectual experiment only slightly less pretentious than it sounds. It has been called the death of the academy. Somewhat entertaining. Moderately edifying. And the dawn of a new age. Is the Tour philosophy? Nein. It is, however, frozen music, thawed in the refrigerator light of its own sad redemption. Refrozen. Then gone bad. It is thought resigned to always already being misunderstood. It is beauty and truth as dialectic. A Doppelgänger without a Doppelgänger. A Welt without Anschauung. Plus Schmerz.
