Art Talk with visiting artist Tim Knowles (UK) (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 14, 2016 - October 14, 2016

Public Works Hosted by the Department of Art, Tim Knowles' talk will focus on his public practice, looking at a range of works from temporary interventions, happenings and events to permanent works. Knowles will expand on the processes and challenges of working in the public realm, and share insights into the relationship of studio/public practice. The City of Calgary’s WATERSHED+: Dynamic Environment Lab is a public art initiative that immerses artists in the Utilities and Environmental Protection Department for periods of time over the next two years researching, exploring and responding to Calgary’s continuously shifting landscape. The lab sets up a beneficial exchange of perspective between artists and The City and encourages critical thinking and creative responses focused on the subject, ultimately resulting in new works that emotionally connect Calgarians to their watershed. Knowles is one of the artists involved in this initiative, and is exploring the movement of water through Calgary’s watershed – the landscape, river systems, drinking water, storm and wastewater systems. Knowles works across a range of mediums, utilising drawing, photography, video, sculptural interventions and participatory events or actions. The work often exists in multiple forms; as a happening or event, an exhibition, an online project, a publication and even as an idea spread by work of mouth. Much of his work involves collaborations with artists, scientists, other professionals and experts in their fields to develop & realise a project, exploring topics and techniques that are new to him. Knowles’ works are process-oriented and rely on chance and environmental elements. Over the past year and a half, Knowles has been an artist-in-residence at the Institute of Biological Environmental and Rural Studies, a world-leading centre for research and education in Aberystwyth, Wales, where he has focused on investigating the water cycle in plants and the landscape at large.

Ask First Symposium: Creating a Campus Culture of Consent (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 14, 2016 - October 15, 2016

Join us for a symposium featuring cutting edge research and best-practices on consent-based gender and sexual violence prevention on Friday, Oct. 14 to Saturday, Oct. 15. What does consent mean to university students? How is it perceived and practiced? Who is most likely to seek consent before and during sexual activity? What are the greatest barriers to creating a culture of consent? How can everyone be involved in a culture of consent so that harmful situations are identified and prevented before it's too late? Understanding how consent is perceived, communicated, interpreted, and acknowledged is a necessary first step toward proactive measures that prevent sexual harassment and assault. This is a priority area for campuses world-wide. Yet, there is a paucity of data on the understanding and experience of consent amongst Canadian post-secondary students and serious disagreement about what, exactly, consent means and how it can be asked for and granted. This symposium is hosted by the Women’s Studies Program and the Women’s Resource Centre. This event is free but pre-registration is required. For more information and to register, visit ucalgary.ca/askfirst/symposium.

Nickle at Noon - Campus Collections Pecha Kucha (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 13, 2016 - October 13, 2016

Hidden away in the dark corners and recesses of the University of Calgary are unique collections of artefacts, specimens, and archives. Though known and used within their home departments and institutes, these collections potentially support broader, interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Collections — whether of botanical, zoological, archaeological, archival or artistic materials — are important primary sources that have the ability to provoke deep, experiential learning and foster new, creative connections. Recent projects have involved fine art students drawing animal skeletons; ACAD Ceramics students connecting with historic potters through handling ancient Latin American ceramics; members of the 18C Matters Research Group discussing the fur trade with historical texts from Archives and Special Collections and preserved pelts from the Arctic Institute of North America; MRU Communications students considering visual communication and Afghan War Rugs; and Visual Arts majors researching and writing about a series of contemporary drawings. In this interactive session, representatives from across campus will share the unique collections in their care, discuss how they support creative research and pedagogy, and foster new connections. Speakers Jana Vamosi, Associate Professor, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology & Herbarium Director, Department of Biological Sciences Annie Murray, Associate University Librarian, Archives & Special Collections, Libraries and Cultural Resources Nicola Howard, Curatorial Technician, Department of Anthropology and Archaeology Jessica Madeleine Theodor, Associate Professor, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Department of Biological Sciences Carmen Chinery, Geoscience Technician, Department of Geoscience Michele Hardy, Curator, Nickle Galleries, Libraries and Cultural Resources For more, visit nickle.ucalgary.ca/event-series/nickle-noon.

Crypto Wars, Round Two: The Debate over Bulk Surveillance and Lawful Access (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 13, 2016 - October 13, 2016

The Institute for Security, Privacy and Information Assurance (ISPIA) presents Brian LaMacchia as part of its Distinguished Lecture Series. Fifteen years after the "crypto wars" ended, the Snowden disclosures of pervasive surveillance have led our industry to broadly deploy end-to-end encryption to protect customer data in transit and at rest. In the U.S., FBI Director James Comey and others in law enforcement have been vocal about concerns that end-to-end encryption, especially in consumer devices like cellphones, would cause law enforcement to “go dark.” While the Obama Administration has declared that – for now – they would not seek legislation to mandate encryption bypass mechanisms for lawful access, law enforcement is still pushing for either voluntary or – as in the recent case involving Apple – compelled “cooperation" by industry to bypass technical security and encryption mechanisms. This talk gives an overview of these policy issues, places them in historical context and discusses how potential outcomes could impact the design and deployment of future secure systems. About the Speaker Brian LaMacchia is the Director of the Security & Cryptography group within Microsoft Research (MSR) where his team conducts basic and applied research and advanced development. LaMacchia is also a founding member of the Microsoft Cryptography Review Board and consults on security and cryptography architectures, protocols and implementations across the company. Before moving into MSR in 2009, he was the Architect for cryptography in Windows Security, Development Lead for .NET Framework Security and Program Manager for core cryptography in Windows 2000. Prior to joining Microsoft, LaMacchia was a member of the Public Policy Research Group at AT&T Labs—Research. In addition to his responsibilities at Microsoft, LaMacchia is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University-Bloomington and an Affiliate Faculty member of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington. He also currently serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) and, as General Chair of Crypto 2016, an ex officio member of the Board of Directors of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). He received S.B., S.M., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT in 1990, 1991, and 1996, respectively. The Institute for Security, Privacy and Information Assurance (ISPIA) is a multi-disciplinary Institute at the University of Calgary, devoted to research and educational activities in all aspects of information protection, with strong linkages to industry and community.

We are, therefore I am: Indigenous Knowledges and Western Academia (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 12, 2016 - October 12, 2016

Since the very beginnings of colonial contact Native American and First Nations knowledge keepers have freely shared their empirical know-how with explorers, traders and settlers, but time and again the combined intellectual hubris of monotheism and Cartesian logo-centrism foreclosed transcultural learning. Today, in various disciplines of Western Academia, we are beginning a certain discursive openness to accept epistemologies, which allow for a more encompassing “Indigenous” relational ontology, in which the seemingly spontaneous and (not yet) explainable can exist alongside hard core materialist empiricism. Lunch will be provided. This event is hosted by the Faculty of Arts. Space is limited. Please RSVP to vesna.malkanovic@ucalgary.ca by Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016 with any dietary considerations. For more info, visit the website.

He received numerous awards, including Fulbright fellowships, the Harris Chair at Dartmouth College as well as the Canada Council of the Arts John G. Diefenbaker Award and the University of Calgary’s 2012/13 Killam Visiting Fellowship. He is the author and editor of eleven books and countless articles.

Winter Cycling Fair (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 12, 2016 - October 12, 2016

Join us for our first ever Winter Cycling Fair on Oct. 12th from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in MacEwan Hall at the University of Calgary. The event is being put on by the University of Calgary’s Office of Sustainability and its student volunteers. The fair is an ideal showcase for sustainability in action as it represents the intersection of sustainability: nature, economy, society and wellbeing. Cycling and related alternative transportation issues deal with the environmental impacts of our daily commuting choices and; shed light on social issues related to bicycle affordability and accessibility. Being able to choose alternative transportation methods in the winter can have a direct link to personal health and wellness, both physically and mentally. A staff transportation survey conducted in 2015 by the university’s Office of Sustainability, identified winter as the largest barrier for year round cycling. The concerns people show when discussing winter cycling is warmth and appropriate equipment. This fair will provide vendors and local bike culture representatives the opportunity to educate and promote, not sell, their winter cycling equipment and information. This event aims to help encourage winter cycling by connecting Calgarians and the university community to local bike shops, and Calgary bike culture and the people behind Calgary’s many cycling initiatives and resources representatives. This event is free and open to the public. The vendors we are showcasing include: Specialized The Bike Root Alberta Bike Swap City of Calgary UCalgary Outdoor Centre MEC Bike Calgary BikeBike Ridleys The Bike Share Good Life Community Bicycle Shop Bowcycle

University of Calgary Qatar: Dreams, Realities, Challenges and Victories (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 12, 2016 - October 12, 2016

Following a brief Annual General Meeting for the Emeritus Association, Dr. Sheila Evans will speak about her experiences with establishing the University of Calgary's Nursing program in Qatar. The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) opened its doors to students in August 2007. With a vision of fostering excellence in nursing education within the State of Qatar, the University and the Faculty of Nursing looked to build a lasting legacy for Qatar and the University of Calgary. Almost a decade later, more than 500 students are enrolled. Fifty-seven students graduated in 2016. However, the path to becoming “a growing concern” has been challenging. In this presentation, we will explore the realities behind the dream, the challenges and how they have been addressed and victories won and yet to be achieved. Presented in the context of the beauty of this distant land, relevant issues include: culture, finance, student preparation, staffing, physical setting, and credentialing. Dr. Evans was Interim Dean and CEO of UCQ from May 2008 to July 2010. This event is organized by the University of Calgary Emeritus Association and is sponsored by the Vice-President (University Relations). It is open to the public at no charge. Hotel Alma is located at 169 University Gate N.W. View map for directions.

Thomas Meinecke reads his works in translation (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 7, 2016 - October 7, 2016

German Pop Literature in Focus Thomas Meinecke reads his works in translation Presented by the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of Arts, University of Calgary, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and Wordfest Moderator: Jan Süselbeck, University of Calgary Friday, October 7, 2016 | 2:00 pm | Gallery Hall, TFDL The School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures and this year’s Wordfest are proud to present German writer Thomas Meinecke. He is one of the most influential authors in German pop literature since the 1980s. Meinecke will be making his inaugural visit to Calgary and read from his works in translation. Meinecke has published more than a dozen books, among them six novels. His most recent work Selbst, his forthcoming seventh novel, will be published by the Suhrkamp Verlag in October 2016. Meinecke’s art is inspired by the author’s own work as a performer on the international pop scene. With his still active avant-garde band Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle (F.S.K.), Meinecke also works as a musician. Last but not least, Meinecke has been performing as a radio moderator and a DJ for decades. The history of the blues, jazz, techno music, remixing techniques and other improvisational styles has crucial influence on his writing. He always has been adopting and integrating these musical methods in his own literary work, creating humorous and surprising pastiches of citations from academic debates, pop history and political controversies. Two of Meinecke’s novels are available in English translation: Tomboy (1998) is a playful literary exploration of Judith Butler’s and Michel Foucault’s theories of sexuality and gender performance. Hellblau (2001, translated as Pale Blue) is a similar case. The polyphonic text features discussions about slave trade, race and gender as well as critical reflections of the second world war and its aftermath both in Germany and the U.S. Meinecke will read and discuss parts of these books with his audience, as they showcase his work at its best. Don't miss this free event! Everyone is welcome to attend! Please note that space is limited and we will have some refreshments available, so to help us plan, please register before October 3, 2016 by clicking HERE. Those who are not able to pre-register are still invited to attend, however resources and seating may be limited.

Reception for Art of Command: Portraits and Posters from Canada’s Afghan Mission (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 6, 2016 - October 6, 2016

Reception at the University of Calgary’s Founders’ Gallery, The Military Museums of Calgary, for Art of Command: Portraits from Canada's Afghan Mission. Reception starts at 5:30pm, remarks at 6pm. The Art of Command: Portraits and Posters from Canada’s Afghan Mission is a solo exhibition by Gertrude Kearns, Canada’s leading contemporary war artist. This exhibition examines the roles of specific highly ranked individuals who not only fought in but commanded Canada’s war in Afghanistan. Her work focuses on the complexities and consequences of military command in challenging situations, and reveals the inner struggles of those at the Afghan operation’s highest levels. This exhibition is not mere homage to Canada’s mission in Afghanistan; it’s a reflection of the effects war has on those who call the shots on the front lines. The Art of Command takes viewers — military and civilians alike — on an emotional journey, through the presentation of fearless, self-assured and ruthlessly honest portraits and fine art prints of military subjects. The Founders' Gallery is located at 4520 Crowchild Trail SW Calgary, AB, T2T 5J4.

The Art of Ingenuity: A Brief History of the Chinese Swindle Story (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 30, 2016 - September 30, 2016

The Language Research Centre "Language of Literature" Speaker Series is proud to present The Art of Ingenuity: A Brief History of the Chinese Swindle Story. Why have authors and editors felt compelled to compile collections of swindle stories at certain times and places? In China, for example, the swindle story, though not been regarded as a formal genre, has enjoyed renaissances in the 17th century, the early 20th century, and during the last 20 years. The existence of comparable works around the world begs a broader set of questions about history and narrative. What, for example, do Zhang Yingyu’s Book of Swindles (Ming China, 1617), Richard King’s The New Cheats of London Exposed (Georgian England, ca. 1800), and P.T. Barnum’s The Humbugs of the World (Reconstruction-era United States, 1867) have in common? Swindle stories, clearly, serve a double purpose: they teach techniques for navigating perilous social environments, and they entertain. But theirs authors tend to frame these narratives within a questionable claim: that ours is an age of unprecedented peril. Focusing on the example of China, this talk highlights an enduring thread running through this literary history: connoisseurship of the swindler’s ingenuity. Christopher Rea is an associate professor of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He is author of The Age of Irreverence: A New History of Laughter in China (California, 2015); editor of China’s Literary Cosmopolitans: Qian Zhongshu, Yang Jiang, and the World of Letters (Brill, 2015) and Humans, Beasts, and Ghosts: Stories and Essays by Qian Zhongshu (Columbia, 2011); and co-editor of The Business of Culture: Cultural Entrepreneurs in China and Southeast Asia (UBC Press, 2015). He is currently co-translating a Ming dynasty story collection called The Book of Swindles.

Interventions in Digital Methods (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 30, 2016 - September 30, 2016

Students, faculty and staff are invited to a talk by Communication, Media and Film professors Dr. Tamara Shepherd and Dr. Jessalynn Keller, with an introduction by M.A. students Carla McCutchin and Sheena Manabat. From big data to digital games, social media to online activism, digital technologies have become central to contemporary humanities and social science research. There is a need to critically interrogate the ethics and social justice implications of the increasingly popular interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research methods for studying digital culture. This seminar introduces the Fourchettes, a SSHRC-funded research network of scholars making critical interventions into digital methods. Presenters will characterize dominant trends in digital methods, critique those trends from an intersectional feminist perspective, and offer examples of the promises and pitfalls of researching messy digital cultures. The event is free and will be followed by a reception. All are welcome to attend. Connections: The CMF Speaker Series is a monthly colloquium hosted by the Department of Communication, Media and Film, presenting new research and special interest topics in the Social Sciences and Humanities to the University of Calgary community. Philosophy Speakers Series - "The One True Logic" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 30, 2016 - September 30, 2016

About the talk The logic FDE (first-degree entailment) is a very natural but very weak logic. (Examples of weakness: modus ponens fails; there are no logical truths; and more.) This talk begins with a brief review of the FDE picture of logic. The review is informal and accessible. This talk is not intended to be technical; its focus is on a philosophical picture. With review of FDE in hand, the talk turns to its main task: namely, to explore and defend a view according to which FDE is "the one true logic." The first question: in what sense might FDE be “the one true logic”? The second question: but how, in light of its conspicuous weakness, /can/ FDE be the one true logic? (We don’t even have modus ponens!) J. C. Beall's main aim is to answer these questions in a clear and plausible fashion. About the speaker J. C. Beall is Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Connecticut where he is Director of the UConn Logic Group. His books include Logic: The Basics, Possibilities and Paradox: An Introduction to Modal and Many-Valued Logic with Bas van Fraassen, Logical Pluralism with Greg Restall, and Spandrels of Truth.
