Philosophy Speakers "Truth and Vindication in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: August 15, 2016 - August 15, 2016

Cindy Holder is an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Victoria. Her research focuses on cultural rights and ethical and theoretical issues in international law, including the human rights of indigenous peoples and transitional mechanisms such as truth commissions and international criminal tribunals. She is giving a public talk on "Truth and Vindication in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada" hosted by the Department of Philosophy as part of their Philosophy Speakers series. About the talk Truth commissions, special criminal tribunals and lustration processes seek to establish collective knowledge of past abuse. This goal of collective knowledge commits such institutions to identification and deployment of arbitral truths: truths that tell between beliefs, assertions and narratives, rendering the cognitive space within which the past is discussed such that actions become intersubjectively defensible and—perhaps more importantly—susceptible to intersubjective criticism. In this paper, I use the example of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada to explore the limitations of non-arbitral conceptions of truth in the context of transitional justice institutions, and the potential value within such a setting of conceptualizing truth as vindication by experience. Decisions about which subjects’ experiences — and which dimensions of those experiences — matter, structure the cognitive space within which collective knowledge projects are pursued. Vindication by experience as a basis for arbitrating between beliefs, assertions and narratives exposes these decisions and makes it possible to ask how the experiences that are taken to be vindicating fit the knowledge projects to which they are harnessed. Vindication by experience further opens a window on transitional knowledge projects themselves as reflection on the relevance of some experiences but not others may reveal features of a project that are otherwise obscured.

Optimal reinsurance for an actuarial model with dependent risks (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: July 14, 2016 - July 14, 2016

In practice, an insurance company usually has several classes of business which are more or less correlated with each other. In view of the complex nature of modern insurance products, research on modeling dependent classes of business has become an important topic in the actuarial literature. This talk discusses the so-called risk model with thinning dependence proposed by Wang and Yuen (2005) [Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, 36(3), 456-468]. A special case of this model is the frequently-used common shock risk model. Based on the thinning dependence, optimal proportional reinsurance is discussed under the criterion of maximizing adjustment coefficient. This research is supported by the CAE 2013 research grant from the Society of Actuaries.

Energy, Power and Strategy Workshop (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: July 14, 2016 - July 14, 2016

It is hard to overstate the importance of energy. We rely on it for everything from advanced medical equipment to heating, cooling and irrigation. It influences our economic, political, military and social policies and the possession or non-possession of sufficient energy resources, however defined, is a key factor in a state’s political and economic power. As such, throughout history, it has often been a source of competition and conflict as the danger of disruption of energy supplies and the political vulnerability that often accompanies energy dependency become threats to international stability and security. This workshop will examine the history behind the relationship between energy and security through six presentations.

Location:

Escalus MacEwan Student Conference Centre

Presenters include: Dr. Melanie Schmoll, University of Hamburg; Dr. Christian Jentzsch, Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr; Dr. Adam Lajeunesse, St. Jerome’s University; Dr. Paul Chastko, University of Calgary; Lauren Moslow, University of Calgary; and Mr. Kelly Ogle, Grafton Asset Management.

Being There: Mentors and Memories (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: June 24, 2016 - July 29, 2016

One of the earliest art works to be donated to the University of Calgary is a delicate wood cut print by Walter J. Phillips, Venus and the Priest (1930). It was accessioned in 1968—eleven years before The Nickle Arts Museum existed. Since opening in 1979, the Nickle has built a substantial collection of artists’ prints with examples of different techniques from several continents and time periods. The richness of the collection is due, in no small measure, to the expertise and generosity of William Laing, recently retired Professor of Printmaking in the Department of Art and long-time Nickle collection committee member. Being There offers a selection of works that span Bill’s career in ‘conversation’ with works that inspire his practice. Included in the exhibition are prints by David Hockney, John Snow, Bridget Riley, and Jim Dine among others. William J. Laing was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and immigrated to Canada in 1960. He studied at the Vancouver School of Art and the Brighton Polytechnic before receiving his Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art in London, England, in 1974. Laing was Professor of Printmaking, Department of Art, University of Calgary between 1977-2015. He has exhibited in over 500 group shows and 47 solo shows across Canada and around the world and is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (R.C.A.), was elected Honorary Fellow of The Royal Society of Painters and Printmakers (London, England) and appointed to the order of the University of Calgary Curated by Michele Hardy and William Laing Nickle Galleries June 24-July 29, 2016

FREE - Wagonstage Children's Theatre (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: June 23, 2016 - August 19, 2016

Wagonstage Children's Theatre produces entertaining, interactive and educational plays for families, written and directed by theatre professionals and performed by drama students of the School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Calgary. The program started out in 1971 as a partnership between the City of Calgary and the division of Drama. Every summer, the company toured the city and performed plays in various locations. Since last year, Wagonstage has found a new home at the Calgary Zoo. This summer, drama students Brandon Huszti, Kaitlyn Olfert, Jocelyn Spielman and Logan Teske will be performing two different 20-minute family-friendly plays, written by Nicola Elson and directed by Kelly Reay. Hippo Needs a Bath tells the story of two clowns who have one job to do: give a hippo a bath. But how does one give a hippo a bath? “There will be clowns, a giant hippo puppet, live music and shenanigans galore,” explains Elson. “This play is suitable for all ages and especially fit for the little ones.” The Dinosaur Club, No Babies Allowed! follows the adventures of budding paleontologist Wallace and his best friend Troy the Triceratops. Together, they spend their days digging in their sandbox, looking for fossils. Until one day, they get some rather unsettling news that turns their world upside-down. “We’ve got shadow theatre, lots of dinosaurs and plenty of opportunities for children to have their moment on stage,” says Elson. “This show is suitable for all ages, and ideal for five to ten year olds.” Wagonstage Children's Theatre presents Hippo Needs a Bath in the green space between the Kitamba Café and the Rhino enclosure; and The Dinosaur Club, No Babies Allowed! in the Prehistoric Park Amphitheatre. All Sport One Day — a free day of sport discovery (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: June 18, 2016 - June 18, 2016

Children ages 6-12 can have fun and experience new and exciting sport activities during the annual “All Sport One Day” event, taking place on the third Saturday in June. This city-wide event gives children a chance to try new activities and connects them and their families with local facilities and sport organizations. The first All Sport One Day event was held in Calgary in 2009, at two facilities with 450 kids. It has grown significantly since its debut, and currently includes 14 sport and recreation facilities, 50+ local sport organizations, and over 2,800 youth. Through “discovery sessions” held at each facility, All Sport One Day introduces as many youth as possible to a diverse range of sport activities. The event is a great opportunity for parents, youth, sport facilities and sport organizations to make connections, with an overarching goal of promoting sport and physical activity. All Sport One Day activities focus on developing physical literacy, which is just as important as the ability to read and write. With physical literacy, a door opens to a world of opportunities in sport and physical activity. Almost any sport you can think of is represented, from archery to wheelchair basketball, and all the sports in between! A noninvasive technique to assist dermatologists in the diagnosis of melanoma is dermoscopy, which is an epiluminescence light microscopy technique that magnifies lesions and enables examination down to the dermoepidermal junction. There are four main diagnostic methods for dermoscopic images: the ABCD rule, pattern analysis, Menzies method, and the 7-point checklist. These methods were evaluated at the 2000 Consensus Net Meeting on Dermoscopy by experts from all over the world. Pattern analysis, considered as the classic approach for diagnosis with dermoscopic images, was deemed to be superior to the other methods. Pattern analysis seeks to identify specific patterns that may be local or global. Melanocytic lesions are identified by their general dermoscopic features, defining their global pattern, or by specific dermoscopic criteria that determine their local patterns. A lesion is categorized by its global pattern, although it can present more than one local pattern. In this seminar, image processing techniques to help physicians to determine different pattern features presented by lesions will be described. Computer-Aided Systems for Burn Assessment (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: June 7, 2016 - June 7, 2016

A burn injury is the result of an energy transfer that destroys skin and adjacent tissues. For successful evolution of a burn injury, it is essential to initiate the correct first treatment as soon as possible. The first treatment depends on assessment of burn severity. The main factors that determine the severity of burns are burn surface area, depth, and location. As the cost of maintaining a Burn Unit is high, it would be desirable to have an automatic system to give a first assessment in local medical centers or at the site of emergency, where there is a lack of specialists. If a patient with burn wounds arrives at a medical center without a Burn Unit, a telephone communication is established between the local medical center and the closest hospital with a Burn Unit, and the nonexpert doctor describes subjectively the color, shape, and other aspects considered important for burn characterization. In many cases, the result is the application of an incorrect first treatment or unnecessary displacement of the patient, involving high healthcare cost and psychological trauma for the patient. These conditions, together to the fact that a burn patient is usually treated initially in a primary health center, call for the use of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tool in clinical practice. Procedures and systems for CAD have gained acceptance in medicine. However, the extension of the CAD concept to the analysis of color images of skin lesions is developing at a slower pace due to difficulties in translating human color perception into objective rules that may be analyzed by a computer. This seminar will present the state of the art and current research work on CAD tools for burn assessment. For further information contact: Professor Raj Rangayyan - ranga@ucalgary.ca

Biostatistics/SAGE Seminar (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: June 2, 2016 - June 2, 2016

Prof. Ying Zhang of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Acadia University, is giving the Spring 2016 SAGE/Biostatistics Seminar entitled "Test for trend for blocked time series", on Thursday, June 2, 2016. Below is the summary of the talk: Motivated by an investigation on effects of local environmental conditions on yield in maple syrup production in a Nova Scotia farm, we generalize the nonparametric seasonal Mann-Kendall test procedure to test for trend in blocked and panel time series data. To further answer the question when the change happens, we propose a two-stage procedure for estimating the change point in the blocked data. In this talk, I will review some well-known nonparametric statistics used for testing/estimating for trend/change point in univariate time series data and then introduce our generalizations to the blocked data. The procedure is then further illustrated with the average monthly water discharges (m3/sec) from January 1958 to December 2008 at the Athabasca River downstream of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada.

Addressing the soaring cost of scholarly journals (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 27, 2016 - May 27, 2016

Information sciences expert Vincent Larivière to talk about the current crisis in academic publishing. On May 27, Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) will host a presentation by one of the country’s leading experts on scholarly publishing. Vincent Larivière will discuss his ground-breaking study into academic journal use at Université de Montréal (UdeM) which combined usage statistics and citation indexes with a qualitative survey of faculty on their preferred journals. The result was a paradigm shift in the UdeM’s negotiations with publishers, with UdeM most recently keeping only 6.6 per cent of one publisher's journals which accounted for 42 per cent of the downloads. Learn more about this talk The presentation is open to the public.

Location:

Murray Fraser Hall 2370

Speaker:

Vincent Larivière, Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication at the Université de Montréal, has been examining the evolution of the academic journal publishing system. Now she’s focusing on the impact a witness can have in a bullying situation. By conducting real-life experiments Sandy’s research explores the reactions witnesses experience when they see someone being mistreated. Her results show how even small gestures can have a big impact. Sandy is an associate professor in human resources and organizational dynamics at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary. Her research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. She has published her research in leading journals in her field, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and the Journal of Business Ethics. Lana Wells is a passionate advocate for changing policies and behaviours to support violence-free lives. Her research is the foundation for the Alberta Government’s Family Violence Prevention Framework. Lana is currently focused on building the 'wills and skills' so people, families and communities can live violence-free. Through her work with community leaders, governments and most recently the United Nations Human Rights Council, she wants to stop the violence before it even starts. Lana has been a violence-prevention advocate for more than 20 years. She is the Brenda Strafford Chair in the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary, and leads Shift: The Project to End Domestic Violence. Since the appointment in 2010, Lana has secured over $3 million in research funding, grants and awards.
