Category: Other EventDates: May 28, 2015 - May 28, 2015
As part of the opening workshop of the PIMS CRG "Explicit Methods for Abelian Varieties", we are pleased to welcome Prof. Kumar Murty (Toronto), who will give a colloquium on the subject. This talk is intended for a general science audience, and will be followed by a light reception. No advance registration is required. Title: Symmetry, Periodicity and Information Security Abstract: Two notions that are of central importance in mathematics are symmetry and periodicity. The concept of symmetry is connected to the theory of groups, an important part of algebra, and periodicity is connected with harmonic analysis and special functions, an important part of analysis. The two notions come together in the geometric structure known as an Abelian variety. These varieties, which abound in nature, are now also fundamental to information security. For example, they form the basis of the security of a Blackberry. In this informal talk, we will discuss symmetry and periodicity and illustrate them with examples. We will then introduce the concept of an Abelian variety and explain its connection to information security.
Location:
Math Sciences 431
Speaker:
Prof. Kumar Murty works in Number Theory and Algebraic Geometry, and their application to problems in Information Technology. His received his Ph.D. in 1982 under the direction of John Tate at Harvard University. After spending a year each at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) and the Tata Institute for Fundamental Research (Mumbai), he joined Concordia University as an NSERC University Research Fellow. In 1987, he moved to the University of Toronto where he is Professor and Chair. Kumar received the Coxeter-James prize of the Canadian Mathematical Society in 1991, a Steacie Fellowship from NSERC in 1995, and was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1995. He was elected a Fellow of the Fields Institute in 2003 and a Foreign Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India) in 2011. He has published more than 100 papers and authored or edited 6 books in number theory, algebraic geometry and their applications to security, privacy and data integrity. He also holds 2 patents in data integrity and identity management.

Who's in and who's out? The "Uh-Oh Syndrome" is the negative reaction we can experience when we encounter something or someone different. This program shows how. Bring your lunch, and learn from and discuss the work of Dr. Steve Robbins, highly sought after speaker on diversity and inclusion. The workshop is organized by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Protected Disclosure. To register please click on https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-uh-oh-syndrome-tickets-16729046027

Winnipeg-born Ron Charach is the author of nine books of poetry. His work is widely published in national and international journals and anthologies of writing by doctors about their craft. He was contributing editor of The Naked Physician, the sole anthology of poetry by Canadian medical practitioners. A practicing psychiatrist now residing in Toronto, Charach combines a physician's candid eye for the foibles and betrayals of the body with a psychiatrist's compassion for the suffering of the mind. He creates poems around the memorable image, the anecdote that, on the surface, seems to say little, yet opens to reveal a great deal about the human condition. Ron's humanistic convictions also find voice in the letters pages of Canadian and American newspapers. Essays that define and elaborate on his liberal humanist views are found in his 2009 collection, Cowboys and Bleeding Hearts.

Join us at CIVIC on Third (130 3 Avenue SE) for Design Matters with Ma Yansong, founder and principal of MAD Architects, designers of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago! Fittingly, the lecture will be held on Monday, May 4th. Ma will lead the audience through his vision for a future "shan-shui city", a high density urban development inspired by traditional Chinese paintings of mountain ranges. Additionally, he will speak about the MAD design philosophy. In 2006, Ma was awarded the "Young Architects Award" by the Architectural League of New York. In 2008 he was selected as one of the "20 Most Influential Young Architects" by ICON magazine. Fast Company respectively named him one of the "10 Most Creative People in Architecture in 2009" and one of the "100 Most Creative People in Business in 2014." In 2010 he became the first architect from China to receive a RIBA fellowship. In 2014 he was awarded "Young Global Leaders (YGL)" by World Economic Forum. In 2012, his iconic project "Absolute Towers," two residential towers in Mississauga, Canada was named the "Best Tall Building in the Americas" by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Following a global search, MAD Architects was chosen as the principal designer for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago, with VOA Associates serving as the executive architect leading the implementation of MAD's design. This symposium is in celebration of the 5th Anniversary of the journal Methods in Ecology and Evolution and will feature seminars in how genomics provides avenues for insight along three main branches in ecology and evolution: 1) genomics and trait evolution; 2) genomics and evolutionary Ecology; and 3) genomics and biodiversity science. The topics throughout the symposium are intended to be diverse in study system and will feature a series of new advances that apply to the fields of ecology and evolution. We have assembled experts in the field of genomics from diverse backgrounds (molecular ecology, evolution of parasitism, spatial bioinformatics, metagenomics) to deliver instructional seminars on the advances genomics offers in terms of potential methods and new directions. All seminar placements have been filled (see http://www.methodsinecologyandevolution.org/view/0/Events.html for our great line-up of speakers) but please contact Jana Vamosi at jvamosi@ucalgary.ca if you are a graduate student interested in presenting a poster.

Category: Other EventDates: April 22, 2015 - April 22, 2015
Now in its third year, the Frank Eyck Memorial Lecture in German History will be held on 22 April 2015 in the Husky Oil Great Hall (Rozsa Centre) on the University of Calgary Main Campus. Dr. Konrad Jarausch (University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill) will deliver this year’s keynote address. Exploring Germany’s path after re-unification in 1991, Dr. Jarausch’s talk, "Consequences of Unification," will take stock of the social, economic, cultural, and political dimensions of the merger between East and West Germany. The resulting balance sheet is neither triumphalist nor hypercritical, but rather an effort to establish what worked and what did not. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the lecture will start at 7 pm. Refreshments will be served before and after. This event is free and open to the public.

Category: Other EventDates: April 9, 2015 - April 9, 2015
This paper reports on the results of multispectral imaging of the illustration pages of British Library MS Cotton Nero A.x (art. 3), the unique manuscript of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (and other poems). The paper describes the process and equipment, but also interesting results of the analysis of the images. For example, a particular wavelength of infrared light produces an image to which the layers of painted pigment contribute little but in which the underdrawing in ink appears very crisply, giving the impression of looking through the colour that has been painted on afterwards at the underdrawing itself and showing some surprising and complex details now obscured by painted pigment. Other wavelengths make stark differentiation between pigments that are quite similar to the naked eye in natural light: for example, a particular green bush in one illustration shares with the Pearl-maiden's grave mound in another and the Green Knight's Chapel in a third the use of a copper-green apparently particularly employed by the artist to ornament important details--but what is so important about that bush? This event is free and open to the public. Presented by MARCS: The Medieval and Renaissance Cultural Studies Research Group
