ISPIA Distinguished Lecture: "The Unfalsifiability of Security Claims, and we we can do about it" (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: October 8, 2015 - October 8, 2015
There is an inherent asymmetry in computer security: things can be declared insecure by observation, but not the reverse; there is no test that allows us to declare an arbitrary system or technique secure. We show that this implies that claims of necessary conditions for security (and sufficient conditions for insecurity) are unfalsifiable (or untestable). This in turn implies an asymmetry in self-correction: while the claim that countermeasures are sufficient can always be refuted, the claim that they are necessary cannot. If Science is self-correcting, then to do things scientifically we must be able to identify errors. We argue that progress has been slow in security precisely because of a failure to identify mistakes. Bad ideas that have received no corroboration persist indefinitely and the resources they consume crowds out sensible measures to reduce harm. Many things that deliver no observed benefit are declared necessary for security, either because they have defined to be so, or have been reached through logically muddled arguments. We argue that a scientific approach to security is closer than we think, but it requires abandoning many long cherished beliefs. BIO: Cormac Herley's main current interests are data analysis problems, authentication and the economics of information security. He has published widely in signal and image processing, information theory, multimedia, networking and security. He is the inventor on over 70 US patents, and has shipped technologies used by hundreds of millions of users. His research has been widely covered in outlets such as the Economist, NY Times, Washington Post, Wall St Journal, BBC, the Guardian, Wired and the Atlantic. He received the PhD degree from Columbia University, the MSEE from Georgia Tech, and the BE(Elect) from the National University of Ireland. She believes in a fresh start on the other side of the Wall. But in the West she doesn’t know anybody. Terry's CAUSE on Campus (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: September 29, 2015 - September 29, 2015
2015 marks the 35th anniversary since Terry Fox united all of Canada with his Marathon of Hope. To celebrate this milestone, the Terry Fox Foundation has set a goal of raising 35 million dollars in 2015. ’35 million’ doesn’t just represent the 35th anniversary – it represents the amount of money raised if every Canadian gave just $1 – precisely Terry’s goal when he started running 35 years ago. On September 29, 2015 students, faculty, and staff at the University of Calgary will join their peers across Canada and continue to honour Terry’s memory by taking part in Terry’s CAUSE on Campus, to raise money for cancer research. Also participating this year are Carleton University, Centennial College, College of the North Atlantic - Carbonear Campus, Fanshawe College, Marine Institute, McMaster University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, New Brunswick Community College, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Queen’s University, Simon Fraser University, University of Regina, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario, and York University. “There is a strong connection between Terry and the community of Canadian post-secondary students,” said Darrell Fox, Terry’s brother and a TFRI senior advisor, who is spearheading the national initiative. “Terry was a university student when he started planning what would become the Marathon of Hope. That students today continue to take up his cause is an honour to his dream of ending cancer.” All funds raised will go to the Terry Fox Foundation and the Terry Fox Research Institute for cancer research. The University of Calgary will be hosting a 5k walk or run which will begin with opening remarks from Dr. Jennifer Chan, a researcher from the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute. There will be a warm up prior to the run, and refreshments for all participants after. Prizes will also be handed out. Registration begins at 11:30am, with the run to start at 12:00pm. The run will take place on the University of Calgary campus, beginning at the MacEwan Student Centre South Courtyard/TFDL Quad. Participants are encouraged to join a team with other students and staff on campus. Those who are unable to walk or run during the event are able to sponsor individuals or groups. Terry’s CAUSE T-Shirts are available for $10 at the event, or can be purchased ahead of time by emailing snbava@ucalgary.ca For more information, visit https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/LocationHome.aspx?eventid=172183〈pref=en-CA&locationID=172191&Referrer=http%3a%2f%2fwww.terryfox.org%2fCauseCampus%2fCampus_registration.html

Category: Other EventDates: September 29, 2015 - September 29, 2015
The Chair of Christian Thought presents The Bentall Lectures in Christian Theology with Dr. Ryan J. Williams SSHRC Post-Doctoral Fellow Department of Classics and Religion, University of Calgary This talk explores the challenges and opportunities of rehabilitating individuals convicted of terrorism-related offences within prisons. This problem is examined in the light of Anglican theologian Rowan Williams’ reflections on the meaning of “responsibility” and the role of correctional services as “guarantors of possibilities.” Different countries have varied approaches, with some “containing” convicted terrorist offenders in special units and other countries “dispersing” this type of prisoner among the regular prisoner population. This talk uses the UK’s “dispersal prisons” as an example and will describe the complex relationships among offenders convicted of terrorism and peers, staff, and chaplaincy.
Location:
Social Sciences 113
Speaker:
Dr. Ryan J. Williams completed his Ph.D. in 2012 in the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England and is a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge. He has published articles in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion and in the Journal of Contemporary Religion. Redeeming the “unredeemable”: Rehabilitating extremist offenders and what this teaches us about Peace-building (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: September 28, 2015 - September 28, 2015
The Chair in Christian Thought presents The Bentall Lectures in Christian Theology with Dr. Ryan J. Williams SSHRC Post-Doctoral Fellow Department of Classics and Religion, University of Calgary The Canadian case of Omar Khadr - Guantanamo Bay detainee, now living in Edmonton - embodies new questions around the rehabilitation and release of offenders convicted of terrorism related offences. Khadr’s case of hope and change contrasts with broader opinion against the possibility of rehabilitating those convicted under counter-terrorism legislation. This talk will explore the reasons behind this resistance and the significance of the possibility of rehabili-tating this type of offender in a global, post-secular and post-9/11 world. The lecture is based on Williams’ recent fieldwork in UK maximum security prisons, and will draw on his interviews with prisoners convicted of terrorist offences.

The Hotchkiss Brain Institute is pleased to present the sixth annual Bryan Kolb Lecture in Behavioural Neuroscience. Lecture: Individual Variation in Resisting Temptation: Implications for Addiction Cues associated with rewards, such as food or drugs, can acquire considerable control over behavior, for example, instigating actions to obtain the reward. There are, however, large individual differences in the motivational properties of reward cues, and the extent to which they can be resisted. This presentation will address the implications of individual differences in cue-evoked motivational processes and in cognitive control in the development of impulse control disorders, including addiction, and possible neurobiological substrates. HBI Welcome Back Wine & Cheese Reception Immediately following the Bryan Kolb Lecture in Behavioural Neuroscience, we invite all members, trainees, staff and guests to join us. HRIC Atrium. Philosophy Speakers: Richard Zach (UCalgary), "Carnap's General Axiomatics" (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: September 25, 2015 - September 25, 2015
About the Talk During the hey-day of the Vienna Circle, Rudolf Carnap pursued two technical projects in logic: the first was the general axiomatics program, in which he attempted to develop a general theory of axiomatic theories within the framework of the type theory of Russell and Whitehead's Principia mathematica. The second was the program of Logical Syntax of Language (1934). The latter is justly viewed as a breakthrough contribution in the history of modern logic, while the former is often dismissed as a misguided attempt to something that can't be done in the outdated framework of pre-Gödel logic. A closer examination of Carnap's general axiomatics projects reveals it as an important milestone to Gödel, Tarski, and Carnap's own Logical Syntax. About the Speaker Richard Zach is Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Philosophy at the University of Calgary. He works in logic, history of analytic philosophy, and the philosophy of mathematics. He is the editor of The Collected Works of Rudolf Carnap; Paul Bernays-Philosopher of Mathematics; and David Hilbert and Paul Bernays Grundlagen der Mathematik. He is a founding editor of Journal for the History of Analytic Philosophy, a founding editor of Review of Symbolic Logic, associate editor of Studia Logica, and subject editor of Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (History of Modern Logic). He recently returned to UCalgary following a visiting professorship at McGill University. Richard Zach's UCalgary page

Ron Moppet: Sculptur(al) Reception (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: September 24, 2015 - September 24, 2015
As a painter, Ron Moppett is known as a brilliant colourist and highly intellectual painter, one that approaches painting as a series of propositions. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources in history, cultural styles and popular culture, the puzzle like components of Moppett’s works are conversational gambits, each part contributing multiple connotations towards the whole. To pose existential questions about who he is and who we are, Moppett develops a visual vocabulary with a treasury of idioms about childhood, sexuality, working, aging, and mortality. To this he adds references to a sense of place, to relationships with history, culture, and landscape. The meaning of the iconography shifts according to its context, specific style, and treatment in each work. Sculptur(al) focuses on those works where Moppett blurs the distinction between painting and sculpture and underscores the physical or “real” presence of the painting as an object. Employing a multi-paneled structure first adopted from British painter Francis Bacon in the early 1970s, Moppett has continued to evolve the gambit, often joining two, three, four or six panels to sequence and unify disparate elements. This exhibition revisits Moppett’s work in a retrospective sweep, yet through a lens that looks not only to the conversations hidden in his private lexicon of painted images but also to foreground the commanding role of sculpture throughout his career. Reception Thursday 24 September 2015 5:00 – 8:00 pm Exhibit Runs 24 September – 19 December 2015 Organized by Nickle Galleries, curated by Christine Sowiak with catalogue essay by Victoria Baster.

Seminar on The Challenges of Pattern Recognition for Speech Signals (University of Calgary)
Category: Other EventDates: September 23, 2015 - September 23, 2015
The Challenges of Pattern Recognition for Speech Signals Speaker: Dr. Douglas O’Shaughnessy Institution: University of Quebec Date: 23 September 2015 Time: 2:00PM Place: ICT 424C Abstract: Speech coding has found great success in today’s widespread usage of cell phones. In addition, people are increasingly accustomed to hearing and accepting synthetic voices when they access information by phone. A third major system used for speech, automatic speech recognition (ASR), is also seeing significant usage, but still has major limitations, falling far short of what human listeners can do. This talk will examine the modern techniques applied for recognition of the information present in speech: its textual content, the identity of the speaker, emotional state, and the language used. We will examine ways to extract relevant parameters, while ignoring channel distortions and extraneous sounds that may also be present in the signal. A brief history of ASR development will show the evolution of usage of Fourier analysis, linear prediction, cepstrum, and neural networks. The strengths and weaknesses of the modern approach to ASR that uses mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), hidden Markov Models (HMM), and language models will also be discussed.
