The University of Calgary Archives and Special Collections is pleased to announce an exhibition of the modern-media communications explosion of a hundred years ago: Picture Postcards. Postcards once excited and captured the imagination of millions of people in the early 20th century and fired up a new media revolution, the results of which we’re still seeing today. Postcards were the emails and iPhones of the 1909, complete with their own memes. Though it may seem outdated and obsolete to us now, the postcard collecting craze was the product of an era undergoing more disruptive technological and social changes than we are today. With an estimated one billion cards made each year in North America alone during the boom, many postcards remain for collectors and enthusiasts to cherish and interpret today. The exhibition features a rare opportunity to view the Elsie Taylor Album of British Actor Postcards. The album of 156 cards belonged to the English schoolgril Elsie Taylor of Hampstead, England. The postcards were collected from 1906-19100 and feature portraits of 42 actresses and 24 actors. The album is owned by Special Collections at the University of Calgary and was acquired through this university’s Drama department. The exhibit closes December 21, 2015 so don’t miss the opportunity to see this unique display on the 5th floor of the Taylor Family Digital Library.

The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.
