RAO Director Phil Langill wants the force to be with you. On Saturday, March 12, Langill will lead a fascinating talk, “2400 years of gravity – From Aristotle to LIGO,” that will cover what physicists understand about gravity, as well as the most recent research exploring the latest test of Einstein’s theories. LIGO refers to Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory detectors, which were the devices that recently confirmed the existence of gravitational waves. Visitors will have the opportunity to look through the RAO’s array of telescopes (weather permitting), with astronomers from the University of Calgary and members of the Royal Astronomical Society on hand to answer questions. If the sky is clear, Jupiter is visible and the constellation Orion chases Taurus the bull while the big dog Canis Major follows, creating a spectacular display in the southern sky. Learn more about the RAO online at http://www.ucalgary.ca/rao/ or on Twitter @RAOastronomy. The entrance fee is $20 per car OR $10 per person, all proceeds go towards the RAO educational programming.
