The exhibition Malleable Monuments is on display until December 7, 2016 in EVDS Small Gallery. Malleable Monuments presents a grouping of transcalar design experiments that test how to empower the role of architecture within the transforming, evolving, fluctuating, and indeterminate conditions of the city, its public sphere, and its ecological context. Four geologic models are situated within a tensile portico structure, which both references the monumental archetype, yet destabilizes its reading through the lightness and malleability of its materiality. A series of taxonomy drawings classify the design experiments into four categories—Frameworks, Living Archives, Articulated Surfaces, and Rewiring States. These projects share a goal of reconciling and choreographing how the human and environmental subject and their individual, transforming, ephemeral, and often contradictory characteristics continuously recompose a permanent work. The work is exhibited as one of six selected winners of the 2016 Architectural League Prize. About the Architectural League Prize The Architectural League Prize is an annual competition, series of lectures, and exhibition organized by The Architectural League and its Young Architects and Designers Committee. Participants in the program are chosen through a portfolio competition that is juried by distinguished architects, artists and critics, and the Young Architects and Designers Committee. The committee, a group selected each year from past winners of the League Prize, is responsible for developing the program’s theme and selecting competition jurors. Open to designers ten years or less out of school, the competition draws entrants from around North America. The lecture series and exhibition by winners of the competition provide a lively public forum for the discussion of their work and ideas. This year’s theme for the portfolio competition, (im)permanence, asks how time affects architecture’s assertion of style, methods of assembly, and relationship to program, thus altering our expectations of permanent structures in an impermanent environment.
