All fourteen of the works of Xenophon of Athens (c. 430-364 BCE) are extant and many of them had a significant afterlife during the early modern period. But study of the reception of his work is hampered by the fact that he wrote such radically different works which were disseminated in different ways at different times, and often, but not always, to different audiences. An examination, however, of how one of his works, the Cyropaedia (‘Education of Cyrus’), was published and disseminated, and of what the paratexts in these different publications can tell us about the intended audiences, reveals an interesting picture which can help to illuminate some of the ways in which the Cyropaedia was appropriated in contemporary literature.
