In conjunction with Spark Disability Arts Festival Nov. 28-Dec. 2, Nickle Galleries hosts Cripping the Museum: A Panel Discussion on Disability, Art, Museums and Galleries in Calgary. As Jeanna Reid recently noted in Canadian Art, “We live in a time of unparalleled interest in … disability arts.” But what are “disability arts?” And who are artists with disabilities? Apart from the five-day spotlight the Spark Disability Arts Festival shines on local talent, how well represented are artists with disabilities in Calgary? What are the issues local artists face navigating the art world? Similarly, what are the issues persons with disabilities face visiting Calgary’s museums and galleries? As Reid suggests, cripping the arts involves unsettling the larger art world, exposing complacency and, hopefully, planting seeds for the future. Panellists: Dick Averns, Visual Artist and Instructor, Department of Art, University of Calgary Angela Broad, Visual Artist and PhD Candidate, Computer Mediated Design, University of Calgary Geraldine Chimirri-Russell, Curator, Nickle Galleries, University of Calgary (retired) Stephanie Hanson, Wellness Services Program Facilitator, Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research Sandra Morton Weizman, Museum Consultant and Principal, Clinic for Heilkunst Medicine Moderator: Michele Hardy, Curator, Nickle Galleries, University of Calgary Everyone is welcome. Free! See the festival website.
