The negative impacts from the downturn in Alberta's economy aren't just affecting people — some pets are having a hard time too.
The number of animals being surrendered to the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) has gone up, said spokeswoman Lindsay Black, with many of them suffering medical needs.

The funding will support 36 community organizations across the province “to end gender based violence,” with 14 in Calgary, seven in Edmonton, four in southern Alberta, seven in central Alberta and four in northern Alberta.

Calgary high school students launch charity to give back to their community
High school can be a busy time for teenagers, but one Grade 12 student at Western Canada High School wanted to make a difference in her community.
Wynne Leong, 17, founded The Love Cycle Charity after speaking with peers who shared her desire to volunteer and give back.
The charity now has more than 25 members aged 12 to 18 from five Calgary schools, including students in different grades.
