Gravity Open House at the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 12, 2016 - March 12, 2016

RAO Director Phil Langill wants the force to be with you. On Saturday, March 12, Langill will lead a fascinating talk, "2400 years of gravity - From Aristotle to LIGO," that will cover what physicists understand about gravity, as well as the most recent research exploring the latest test of Einstein's theories. LIGO refers to Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory detectors, which were the devices that recently confirmed the existence of gravitational waves. Visitors will have the opportunity to look through the RAO’s array of telescopes (weather permitting), with astronomers from the University of Calgary and members of the Royal Astronomical Society on hand to answer questions. If the sky is clear, Jupiter is visible and the constellation Orion chases Taurus the bull while the big dog Canis Major follows, creating a spectacular display in the southern sky. Learn more about the RAO online at http://www.ucalgary.ca/rao/ or on Twitter @RAOastronomy. The entrance fee is $20 per car OR $10 per person, all proceeds go towards the RAO educational programming.

Philosophy Speakers ALUMNI SERIES: William Lyons (Trinity College Dublin), "Philosophy, Drama and Philosophical Drama" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 11, 2016 - March 11, 2016

Location: Social Sciences Tower, Room 1253 About the Talk I should really entitle this talk “And now for something completely different”, as it will not be like the regular academic lectures or talks you are used to hearing. Indeed it is not so much a case of talking as of “Showing, Not Saying”. I begin with some brief comments about how I came to be interested in writing what I call “theatre of thought” or philosophical drama. I shall then make some remarks about what are the possibilities of incarnating philosophy in drama without the result becoming intensely boring, and about how philosophical drama might serve as a form of philosophy “outreach”. I intend to show three filmed extracts from some of my “theatre of thought” plays. I will lead into each showing with some account of the philosophical themes embedded in the plays in question and some background to the particular scenes filmed. The first short film is an extract from a film of the final dress rehearsal of the London premiere of “Socrates and his Clouds” in 2013 (text published by Oberon Books, 2013); the second is a specially filmed scene from “Wittgenstein – The Crooked Roads”, premiered in London in 2011 (text published by Methuen Drama – Bloomsbury, 2015); the third is a film of the Epilogue from the play “The Fir Tree and the Ivy”, about Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt, a play which has yet to be staged. About the Speaker William Lyons (UCalgary MA 1968) is a former head of the Department of Philosophy and Professor of Moral Philosophy in the School of Mental and Moral Science at Trinity College Dublin. He is now an Emeritus Fellow of Trinity College and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. He is the author of Gilbert Ryle (1980), Emotion (1980), The Disappearance of Introspection (1986), Approaches to Intentionality (1995), Matters of the Mind (2001), Socrates and His Clouds (2013), Wittgenstein - The Crooked Roads (2015) and editor of Modern Philosophy of Mind (1995). He has also published numerous articles in leading academic journals. Professor Lyons also has an interest in 'Theatre of Thought' drama. His play about Wittgenstein, 'The Crooked Roads of Genius' won the START Chapbooks play competition in 2005 and his play about Heidegger and Arendt, 'The Fir Tree and the Ivy', won the Eamon Keane Full Length Play award in 2006 (now translated into Italian as 'L'Edera e L'Abete'). He also has written an Aristophanic play about Socrates, entitled 'Socrates and His Clouds' (previously 'Nimbus Clouds'). The Premiere and subsequent performances of 'Wittgenstein – The Crooked Roads of Genius', directed by Nicholas Blackburn took place at the Riverside Studios, London, 18th April – 8th May 2011. The Premiere and subsequent performances of 'Socrates and his Clouds', produced by the Meddlers Theatre Company and directed by Melina Theocharidou, took place at the Jermyn Street Theatre in central London, from 4th – 22nd June 2013. L'Edera e l'Abete, the Italian translation of William Lyons' play, The Fir Tree and the Ivy, about Hannah Arendt and Martin Heidegger, has just won the Premio Colline di Torino (Testo Teatrale) for 2015. The translation is by Dr Alessio Frenda a recent graduate in Linguistics at TCD.

Hanging out: how and where geckos got sticky (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 9, 2016 - March 9, 2016

With the advent of nanotechnology, attempts to understand and duplicate the means by which geckos cling to smooth surfaces have mushroomed. Because their ability to cling is so highly developed, our understanding of how, and under what environmental circumstances, it began is challenging. Using comparative anatomy, ecology, kinematics and patterns of relationship, I provide insights into this complex evolutionary problem and contemplate new and exciting lines of interdisciplinary research that are emerging. This event is organized by the University of Calgary Emeritus Association and is sponsored by the Vice-President (University Relations). It is open to the community at no charge.

An Evening with Nadia Hashimi (public reading, book sale/signing) (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 8, 2016 - March 8, 2016

The Department of Linguistics Languages and Cultures presents, An Evening with Nadia Hashimi (public reading, book sale/signing) The Arabic Language and Muslim Cultures program is proud to present acclaimed, international bestselling author, Nadia Hashimi who will be on hand to give a reading and facilitate a discussion based on her second novel, When the Moon is Low, an amazing novel that deals with refugees escaping their home country in Afghanistan by following one of the routes currently followed by Syrian refugees. Hashimi points out that in 2009, the number of displaced persons was under ten million. Currently, that figure is nearing 60 million and continues to climb. The refugee situation has now reached epic proportions while the world’s sympathies have ebbed and flowed. Fear, compassion, uncertainty and exhaustion create a mixed reception to the news that refugees will be arriving on our shores. The stories behind the piles of life vests are important to know if we do not want human tragedy to become background noise. Nadia Hashimi's reading/talk will be followed by a question and answer period and then limited time book signing with the famous author. Books will also be available for purchase at the event. March 8, 2016 5 – 7 p.m. Gallery Hall, TFDL Refreshments will be provided All are welcome and encouraged to attend this free event. Political Science Speaker Series - Framed: Media Coverage of Race in Canadian Politics (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 4, 2016 - March 4, 2016

About the Talk: Framed is a wake-up call for those who do not think that race matters. Assumptions about race and diversity are often influenced by the media. As reporters go about selecting which political issues and events to cover, who to quote, and how to frame stories to make them resonate with the public, visible minorities receive less and more negative coverage that their white counterparts. This book provides a new foundation for thinking about diversity and equality in Canada. About the Speaker: Dr. Erin Tolley is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. Her research examines the impact of socio-demographic diversity on Canadian politics. She is the author of Framed: Media and the Coverage of Race in Canadian Politics (UBC Press, 2016). Currently, she is studying the strategies political parties use to recruit women and minority candidates. She is also using experimental and survey methods to examine the impact of race and gender on vote choice. Her work has appeared in the Canadian Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, and Migration Policy Research; she is also the author or co-author of 12 peer-reviewed book chapters, and the co-editor of five books. Prior to coming to the University of Toronto, Erin was an analyst in the federal Department of Citizenship and Immigration. For more information, please visit the Department of Political Science

The LLC Speaker Series presents Monique Charest (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 4, 2016 - March 4, 2016

Interference during lexical access for language production: Considerations for typical language development and developmental language impairments The process of selecting and retrieving words for production is sometimes helped by prior naming events, and sometimes hindered. Patterns of interference in naming have been observed in both adults and children, although the methods and interpretations have differed somewhat. Recent work with adults has focused on interference as a manifestation of learning within lexical networks; whereas work with children has focused on interference as a manifestation of temporary, ongoing activation of prior targets. Moreover, reports from varied tasks suggest that interference phenomena contribute to the profile of speakers with language learning impairments, but the nature of these effects remain poorly understood. In this presentation, Monique Charest will discuss research on the manifestation of interference phenomena during naming in children with typical and impaired language development. She will discuss outcomes of a recent study of young children with typical development that examined lexical interference from the learning perspective adopted in the adult literature. She will also discuss pilot outcomes from ongoing research examining temporal and semantic effects on interference in children with specific language impairment, and will consider what these lines of work offer for thinking about the effects of experience on the lexical system during development, and for thinking about the profiles of children with language impairments.

The Calgary Mathematics & Philosophy Lecture (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 3, 2016 - March 3, 2016

Potential Infinity: A Modal Account Stewart Shapiro The Ohio State UniversityThursday, March 3, 2016, 3:30 pm ST 141 Beginning with Aristotle, almost every major philosopher and mathematician before the nineteenth century rejected the notion of the actual infinite. They all argued that the only sensible notion is that of potential infinity. The list includes some of the greatest mathematical minds ever. Due to Georg Cantor’s influence, the situation is almost the opposite nowadays (with some intuitionists as notable exceptions). The received view is that the notion of a merely potential infinity is dubious: it can only be understood if there is an actual infinity that underlies it. After a sketch of some of the history, Prof. Shapiro will analyze the notion of potential infinity, in modal terms, and assess its scientific merits. This leads to a number of more specific questions. Perhaps the most pressing of these is whether the conception of potential infinity can be explicated in a way that is both interesting and substantially different from the now-dominant conception of actual infinity. One might suspect that, when metaphors and loose talk give way to precise definitions, the apparent differences will evaporate. A number of differences still remain. Some of the most interesting and surprising differences concern consequences that one’s conception of infinity has for higher-order logic. Another important question concerns the relation between potential infinity and mathematical intuitionism. In fact, as will be shown, potential infinity is not inextricably tied to intuitionistic logic. There are interesting explications of potential infinity that underwrite classical logic, while still differing in important ways from actual infinity. However, on some more stringent explications, potential infinity does indeed lead to intuitionistic logic. (The lecture is based on joint work with Øystein Linnebo.) Stewart Shapiro is O'Donnell Professor of Philosophy at The Ohio State University. He is an eminent logician and philosopher of mathematics, well-known for his work on second-order logic and on mathematical structuralism. He is the author of numerous articles and of five books, including most recently Vagueness in Context (2006) on vagueness and logic, and Varieties of Logic (2014) on logical pluralism. This talk is the second annual Calgary Mathematics & Philosophy Lecture, co-sponsored by PIMS, the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, and the Department of Philosophy. The Mathematics & Philosophy Lectures aim to introduce topics at the intersection of mathematics and philosophy to a general academic audience. The event is free & open to the public; a reception follows.

ZIKA- Experts, Advocacy and a Public Health Emergency (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 3, 2016 - March 3, 2016

The World Health Organization has declared the Zika virus in the Americas to be a public health emergency. The Latin American Research Centre has convened a cross-disciplinary roundtable to discuss the public health, human rights, and the economic consequences of this emergency. Topics for cross-disciplinary discussion: Science: What is the Zika virus? Where does it come from, how is it transmitted and to whom? Why should we care? Clinical: What are Zika’s effects on humans? To what extent can other environmental risk factors (e.g., pollutants) be ruled out as causing such effects? PHILOSOPHY SPEAKERS - Yual Chiek, "Compossibility: The Reformed Logical Position" (University of Calgary)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 26, 2016 - February 26, 2016

About the Talk On the Logical Interpretation of Leibnizian compossibility two substances are compossible if and only if the supposition of their co-existence is a logically consistent one, they are incompossible if the supposition of their co-existence is logically inconsistent. Most scholars of Leibniz’s work have abandoned the Logical Interpretation in the face of considerations that they think render the Logical Interpretation untenable. In this paper I maintain that these scholars are mistaken. In my view, abandonment of the Logical Interpretation is premature because the arguments reared against it fall short of a successful refutation of the Logical Interpretation. I argue that these arguments against the Logical Interpretation are successful against only two strains of the Logical Interpretation, but not to a third logical interpretation that I shall present. I call the two strains LS1 and LS2. I call the new interpretation “The Reformed Logical Interpretation.” That there are two distinct strains of the Logical Interpretation is rarely discussed in the literature. I correct this shortcoming by demonstrating that the strongest arguments against it bear on the Logical Interpretation in two quite different ways. Ways that correspond to the two original strains of the Logical Interpretation. I then move to show that the Reformed Logical Interpretation is different from LS1 and LS2 and is not susceptible to the criticisms raised against LS1 and LS2. By virtue of that fact the Reformed Logical Interpretation succeeds where LS1 and LS2 fail, I conclude that the Reformed Logical Interpretation should be taken as the default Logical Interpretation thus keeping the Logical Interpretation a viable solution to the problem of incompossibility. About the Speaker Yual Chiek obtained his PhD from Queen’s University in 2014. Yual specializes in Early-Modern Philosophy with a focus on the modal metaphysics of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. His thesis was the topic of incompossibility, a foundational yet notoriously difficult element of Leibniz’s famous possible worlds metaphysics. The thesis was written while he was a visiting student at Yale University (2011-13) and was supervised by Jon Miller of Queen’s University and Michael Della Rocca of Yale University. Yual is also the co-editor with Dr. Gregory Brown of the University of Houston of a volume entitled Leibniz: Compossibility and Possible Worlds. The volume will be published in The New Synthese Historical Library by Springer Press.

Lucian, the second century CE satirist, who wrote in Greek despite his Syrian origins, had a remarkably vibrant and diverse reception in the early modern period. In this brief overview, the speaker will illustrate the varying contexts of his fortuna, from the classroom and translation on the one side, to art, theatre and literature on the other, paying particular attention to his part in the religious debates of the Reformation and explain how in France lucianisme came to mean 'atheism'.
