Thursday, November 5th, resident Klingon Expert, Joey Windsor, will be in attendance to share his knowledge on one of Star Trek’s many legacies. He has been much in demand, and Verbatim is super pleased that he will do this presentation before he becomes so very busy and famous: “Klingon is an invented ConLang (constructed language) which has been created to be as unnatural as possible in a human context, but both learnable and pronouncable by the actors of Star Trek. As such, it follows the general principles of linguistic universals. In this talk we will explore what makes this barely human language exciting from unusual phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, and semantics. We will look into the sociolingusitics of the 6500+ person speech community, and into the background of how and why this language was created. Despite the linguistic content of this talk, it has been arranged so that very little prior linguistic knowledge is required to understand the discussion.” You asked for it! Hope to see you there!
Location:
Craigie Hall – CHD 420 – Language Research Centre
Speaker:
Joseph Windsor (PhD Student, Linguistics)
