Following a brief Annual General Meeting for the Emeritus Association, Dr. Sheila Evans will speak about her experiences with establishing the University of Calgary’s Nursing program in Qatar. The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) opened its doors to students in August 2007. With a vision of fostering excellence in nursing education within the State of Qatar, the University and the Faculty of Nursing looked to build a lasting legacy for Qatar and the University of Calgary. Almost a decade later, more than 500 students are enrolled. Fifty-seven students graduated in 2016. However, the path to becoming “a growing concern” has been challenging. In this presentation, we will explore the realities behind the dream, the challenges and how they have been addressed and victories won and yet to be achieved. Presented in the context of the beauty of this distant land, relevant issues include: culture, finance, student preparation, staffing, physical setting, and credentialing. Dr. Evans was Interim Dean and CEO of UCQ from May 2008 to July 2010. This event is organized by the University of Calgary Emeritus Association and is sponsored by the Vice-President (University Relations). It is open to the public at no charge. Hotel Alma is located at 169 University Gate N.W. View map for directions.
