One popular construal of environmental sustainability is as a matter of inter-generational justice. But this view requires that the generations have an actual claim to the Earth, what I call a planetary entitlement. The traditional way of grounding the planetary entitlement was by appeal to divine bequest, and contemporary theorists have not offered a suitable replacement. I offer here a sketch of a new way of grounding the planetary entitlement, by appeal to our mutual co-construction with the earth as environment, along the lines suggested by Richard Lewontin. About the speaker Allen Habib is assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Calgary. His research interests focus on ethics, philosophy of law, environmental ethics, and social and political philosophy.
