Long neglect of the laws has left Vienna mired in depravity and vice. The Duchess leaves the city in the hands of the zealous deputy Angelo to restore order, and his first act is to sentence the young gentleman Claudio to death for sexual impropriety. When Claudio’s pious sister Isabella appeals to Angelo, she is offered the difficult choice to betray her honour and her vow of chastity in exchange for her brother’s life. Mercy, loyalty, justice and truth are all tested to their limits in this dark comedy examining hypocrisy, abuse of authority and self-righteousness.
