Students, faculty and staff are invited to a talk by Communication, Media and Film professors Dr. Tamara Shepherd and Dr. Jessalynn Keller, with an introduction by M.A. students Carla McCutchin and Sheena Manabat. From big data to digital games, social media to online activism, digital technologies have become central to contemporary humanities and social science research. There is a need to critically interrogate the ethics and social justice implications of the increasingly popular interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research methods for studying digital culture. This seminar introduces the Fourchettes, a SSHRC-funded research network of scholars making critical interventions into digital methods. Presenters will characterize dominant trends in digital methods, critique those trends from an intersectional feminist perspective, and offer examples of the promises and pitfalls of researching messy digital cultures. The event is free and will be followed by a reception. All are welcome to attend. Connections: The CMF Speaker Series is a monthly colloquium hosted by the Department of Communication, Media and Film, presenting new research and special interest topics in the Social Sciences and Humanities to the University of Calgary community. The events are free and followed by a reception.
