This upcoming event features a film screening over the 3-day period of October 2, 3, and October 6, in which we will show the award-winning documentary The Square (2013). The film will be shown every two hours beginning at 10:00 am on each of the three days: Thursday, October 2, 2014 – 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm in TFDL 340E Friday, October 3, 2014 – 10am, 12pm, 2pm in TFDL 340E Monday, October 6, 2014 – 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm in TFDL 340E *Note – The Square is also available for viewing on Netflix if you have a user account. The Square, an Egyptian-American documentary film by Jehane Noujaim, depicts the ongoing Egyptian Revolution of 2011, beginning with its roots in Tahrir Square. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 86th Academy Awards. It also won three Emmy Awards at the 66th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, out of the four for which it was nominated. Following screenings of the documentary The Square on October 2nd, 3rd, and 6th, this event concludes on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 with a special guest lecture by an Egyptian scholar and activist in the Legacy Suite (located in the Dining Centre, UofC) from 5-7:30 pm. The special guest will present a lecture and will also answer questions and lead general discussion regarding this important film and the historically significant events it depicts. There will be a reception with refreshments to follow. Confirmed attendees are asked to consider any questions they may have for the guest speaker about the film and events it depicts, and e-mail them to aelamrou@ucalgary.ca no later than October 3, 2014. There will also be a more spontaneous Q&A period immediately following the lecture and discussion. Please don’t miss this unique and exciting opportunity to learn about some of the most important socio-political events in recent history. “What happens in Egypt will dramatically affect the rest of the Middle East and the world.” The event is free of charge, and open to the general public.
