RSVP to the Employer Panel on CareerLink Adding Experience to Your Degree: Employers talk about Co-op & Internship Get the Inside Scoop on Co-op & Internship: The Employer Perspective Employer Panelists: Kurt Bryden | IT Professional Kurt Bryden is an IT Professional with 15 years of experience. He worked 5 of those years in the non-profit sector in desktop, network, server and application support. As well as the disaster response IT & telecom lead. Kurt also worked 10 years in the oil and gas sector doing desktop support, as a business analyst/project manager, and was a team lead for corporate applications and application operations. Julie Shaver | Manager at Encana Julie Shaver graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Information Technology. Julie has 17 years of experience in Records and Information Management and has held a managerial role at Encana Corporation for the last 11 years. Shami (Kashama) Willms | Manager at Synopsys Shami grew up in Pincher Creek (windy southern Alberta) and went to Columbia Bible College (Abbotsford, BC – 1995-1997) for 2 years after graduating high school. Shami moved to Calgary and received a BSc Internship degree in Computer Science from the U of C (1997-2002). He did a 16 month internship program with Codefast during that time, working on GUI software development) and then got a full-time job with Codefast upon graduation. His wife, Deanna, and I spent 3 years working as Associate Pastors in Youth and Family ministries at Foothills Mennonite Church and then I returned to Codefast in 2006. Codefast was always a research/startup company and eventually folded in 2007, but Coverity bought the assets to his company and hired 3 people (including Shami). Today Shami is the manager of the Desktop team (IDE and stand–alone GUI development) in the Coverity business unit of Synopsys (who bought his company 1 year ago – 2014) and still in the same office space that he started his internship program in 15 years ago, but now they are taking over the entire floor of the building and have 40-50 people in the Calgary office. Outside of work he is still heavily involved in his church, he enjoys playing/coaching basketball and other sports, and I am Chair of the board at Menno Simons Christian School where his 2 boys attend and his wife works part time in the library there too.
