While the camera is over 150 years old, the new relations it created—between the technologized gaze and its subject, between viewers and views, and between individuals and institutions—are still relevant today. This seminar will explore some of the uses of the camera in its social and aesthetic history, focusing on the photographic practices of the 19th Century and their continuing implications. Presentations will examine chronophotography, the use of superimpositions in spirit photography and the physical construction of the photographable body. Featuring Drs. Ryan Pierson, Murray Leeder, and Annie Rudd, Department of Communication, Media and Film Connections: The CMF Speaker Series is a monthly colloquium hosted by the Department of Communication, Media and Film, presenting new research and special interest topics in the Social Sciences and Humanities to the University of Calgary community. The events are free and followed by a reception.
