We will be hosting a two-hour event focusing on deconstructing, reacting to, and existing alongside concepts of health, medical power, and identity. The first hour will consist of a presentation by Dr. Bonnie Lashewicz on medical power, disability and identity, with a Q&A session; the second half will be a guided small group peer discussion, focusing on challenging our own concepts of our bodies, and exploring diverse methods of expressing ourselves. As we live in an increasingly biomedical society, describing one’s self often relies on the more “legitimate” discourse of biomedicine, resulting in the privileging of “biomedical” descriptors of one’s self in comparison to poetic, literary, spiritual, existential, poetical, moral, or social; ultimately, this confines, constricts, and limits the expression of diverse bodies, minds, and souls, at the expense of well-being.
