Feminist Digital Cultures in a Trump-ed Up World

The election of Donald J. Trump on Nov. 8 has shifted the American political landscape in a way that has serious implications for feminist activists. This informal talk will map how feminists have used digital media to advance gender equality over the past several years and will consider how feminist digital culture may provide a foundation to challenge Trump policies in the coming years. Jessalyn Keller is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication, Media and Film at the University of Calgary. Her research interests are broadly situated within digital media, feminist theories and ethnographic methods. Specifically she is interested in girls’ digital cultures, contemporary feminist activism and solidarities, the performance of feminine selves online, and public girlhoods. Her first book, Girls’ Feminist Blogging in a Postfeminist Age (Routledge, 2015) uses ethnographic methods to explore girls’ blogging as a significant practice of contemporary feminist activism.
