Stampeders’ player Jon Cornish will be kicking off the 2015 Co-op and Internship Week. Beginning on March 16th and going until March 20th, Co-op and Internship week will feature information panels and networking events meant to enhance student experience. The goal of this weeklong event is to increase student awareness on the benefits of internships and co-op programs, and to invite students to apply to the Co-op and Internship programs by the May 1st. Students are encouraged to kick off their career goals on March 18th, beginning at 12:00pm in the TFDL Gallery Hall. Jon Cornish’s keynote speech will be followed by an accomplished student speaker panel, who will share their experiences in co-op & internship. This panel will be followed by some brief Q & A, and networking opportunities with the event ending at 1:30. All students interested in the co-op and internship experience are invited to get the inside scoop on the employer perspective. Occurring on March 19th, from 5:00pm to 6:30pm in the TFDL Gallery Hall, a range of experts will discuss the mutual benefits for both students and employers interested in the program. Following the employer panel, experienced Co-op & Internship students will be available to answer your questions. Co-op programs and internships provide students with the unique experience of hands-on learning. Many Foley, Co-op Coordinator for the Faculty of Arts describes the program, “Arts Co-op students are amazed at the level of work and the responsibilities they are given on a work term. Their work experiences clarify their career and academic goals and provide them with confidence in their abilities to achieve these goals.” Noorie Jadavji, Co-operative Education and Internship Coordinator for the Faculty of Science, also believes the upcoming Career Services event will be a very beneficial week for UCalgary students. She says, “The co-op and internship programs are a win-win for students and employers. It allows both to test the waters. For the students, they get paid while they build their experience, and for the employers, they get to see if the student is a good fit in terms of skills, interests, and team dynamics. In almost all cases, the experience is highly positive and a high percentage of students go on to receive full-time and permanent offers from the employers.” To secure a seat in any of the upcoming Co-op and Internship week events login to CareerLink and check out the CS Events Calendar.
